She opened her eyes in surprise.
No mama,what sort of question is that? She asked still wondering why her mother could be asking her such question.
You see,you don't have to be scared. Tell me,who is the father? Maigret asked smiling at Sarah.
Mama,please stop this nonsense, I am not pregnant. Sarah shouted at her mother unknowingly.
If you are not,prove it . Get dressed,we are going to see the village nurse. Maigret said and left the room.
Pregnant? Can I be pregnant? How can i be pregnant? She thought to herself.
She got dressed and followed her mother to see the village nurse. She wasn't home when they got to her place,so they were asked to come back the next day. Sarah got home confused. 
Could it be..........Uyoyo. What did she do to me? She asked herself. 
She ran outside the house.
Isaac,where is Uyoyo? She asked her brother panicking.
Sister,what happened? Isaac asked but Sarah gave no answer. Instead she ran towards her father's beer parlour. When she got there,she saw Uyoyo and her friends talking to a man at the front of the bar. She walked straight to them and dragged her sister from their midst.
Uyoyo, I want to know what happened to me the night we both went out together. Sarah said angrily.
But sister,I have told you times without number that nothing happened

. Uyoyo replied seeing the state of her sister and didn't want to make her angrier than she was already.
What was inside the wine you gave me? Tell me the whole truth,I want to know. Sarah said with eyes filled with tears.
Uyoyo didn't like it whe her sister cries even though she doesn't care about anyone but herself,that was the reason she had offered to help her in the first place.
Well, it's truth there was something in the wine you drank? Uyoyo said stammering.
What!!! Sarah shouted.
Calm down sister,it was just sleeping tablets......I saw how much you needed the money and that was the only way I could help. Uyoyo said still stammering.
What happened after I took the wine? Sarah asked hoping it wasn't what she was thinking.
Well.......since,you were there as an ashawo (prostitute),I handed you over to one of the rich men at the hotel and... She stammered
And what? Sarah asked furiously.

Just then David arrived at the bar and told Sarah to go and help Obaro in preparing the pepper soup. She dared not disobey her father. She could no longer help herself. This time all was lost,she had no hope again. She got home that evening and locked herself in her mother's bedroom.
She can do me well by ending my miserable life, she had said to herself when her mother threatened to bath her with hot water if she didn't open the door.
She laid on the mat weeping all through the night,she didn't sleep until it was dawn the next day. She woke up wishing everything was just a dream but it was real. 
Am pregnant? She said as tears begin to drop from her eyes again. 
She opened the door,wiped her eyes,then went outside to do her chores but everything has been done already. The compound has been swept,the plates washed and there was food in the kitchen. Could her mother have helped her with her chores? As usual,Uyoyo wasn't around,her mother had gone to the market very early that morning. For the first time,she wasn't scared of her mother. She was feeling so tired and hungry,so she took food from the pot and ate to her satisfaction. 
When her mother returned from the market,she greeted her,to her surprise,she answered. She asked Sarah if she has eaten and she said yes. She then told her to follow her to see the village nurse.
When they got to her place, Maigret was told to wait outside while the woman took Sarah inside with her. Some minutes later Sarah came outside to join her mother.
What did she say? Maigret asked.
Nothing. She said to her mother. Talking to herself ‛‛you should be very happy that you have succeeded in ruining me''.
Few minutes later,the nurse came outside and told them the result of the test was negative.
Nurse are you sure? Sarah asked in disbelieve. 
Yes,nurse,are you sure? Maigret stammered.
Yes,she had a strong fever but she is okay now,all she needs is rest. The nurse said and went back inside.
Sarah could not believe her ears. When she thought all was lost,hope came beaming right through.
Mama,you heard what the nurse said,am not pregnant. She said in excitement. 
Her heart was filled with joy,she has reasons to live again. She ran home leaving her mother behind.
When Uyoyo got back in the evening,Sarah went to meet her at the backyard.
Sister,am not pregnant and the nurse said am still a virgin. How is that possible? What really happened that night? She asked Uyoyo.
