Agony Of The Heart - Episode 9

 

Sir,please don't make jokes,because it is not funny at all. Sarah said shaking.
Am not joking my dear,am very serious. He handed an envelope to Sarah. All you need to know is in that envelope. We are very sorry to inform you this late. The registrar said.
Sarah couldn't believe her ears. Why does it always have to be like this? She has lost her dignity for nothing.
She was told to resume school the following Monday . She was so angry with herself. She should have trusted God for a way out. She got back home dejected. She kept wondering why a miracle seems to happen only at the last hour. If she had known about the scholarship on time,the mistake with Joseph won't have happened.
She cried throughout the night and couldn't break the happy news to her parents. She felt she had taken a step fasted than God. 
I should have trusted in God for a way. She said to herself.
But it was too late for such thoughts and regrets. She has to do something about her state,her mind has be filled with guilt since what happened with Joseph. She still didn't say it to anyone. She decided to visit the church that Monday. When she got there,she knelt down crying,begging God to forgive her. She was so immersed in her prayer that she didn't know when the pastor's wife came in

. She has been looking at Sarah since she came in and felt she needed someone to talk to,so she waited patiently for Sarah to finish praying. 
She called Sarah and asked her what the problem was but Sarah was scared of telling her. What if she tells my parents and everyone in church. I can't let her know. She thought to herself.
Mrs Mercy knew she was going through difficult times,she knew how her parents,especially her mother treated her but that was the first time she saw Sarah cry while praying.
My child, she said holding Sarah's hand and leading her to a chair. I know what you are going through, I know things have not been easy for you. But I want you to trust me,you can tell me anything. Mrs Mercy said.
Thank you ma,you have nothing to worry about. Sarah said wiping the tears off her face.
Sarah was so scared of saying anything to her but after so much pressure,she decided to give in. She told Mrs Mercy about her dreams,she told her how her parents treated her and aren't in support of her education. She told her about the entry examination and fee and about what happened with Joseph.
Mrs Mercy counselled and prayed with her. She told Sarah to tell her parents about the school and scholarship because she still hasn't told her parents about it in fear that they won't allow her go. 
Sarah,you can come to me anything you need help or someone to talk to. Mrs Mercy said.
Sarah wondered why she was being so nice even after knowing what she has done. She felt peace in her soul,a burden was lifted off her. She thanked her pastor's wife and went home. 
That night she called her parents and told them about the nursing school and the scholarship. Her father was so angry.
So you still pushed on with this thought of school Sarah, even when I told you it is not a place for you. David said.
But father, there is nothing wrong in pursuing my dreams. Sarah said boldly. She was so determined.
What has come over you? You possessed child. Don't you know a woman's place is in the house not out there. Your dreams should be getting a good husband,having your own children and raising them well. Maigret said angrily.
What do you know about raising children? Sarah asked angrily. All these years you've done nothing but discouraged me,you treat me like a slave,a nobody. And for once I never complained because I loved,feared and respected you as my mother. Even when you pushed me off limits I still didn't disrespect you. How have you raised me? You are always around and yet,not for once have I felt the love and care of a mother. Why can't I be free to make my own decisions,after all it is my life we are talking about. Sarah said crying. 
Her father landed a resounding slap on her face. 
If you won't obey my rules,in my house,then pack your things and leave. No daughter of mine will go to school,you are a woman and your duty is to your family.  David shouted angrily and went into his bedroom leaving Sarah and Maigret outside the house. Maigret was speechless, she didn't know what to say to Sarah.
A week later, Sarah told her parents she was leaving for school. She told Mrs Mercy how her parents reacted when she broke the news to them. Mrs Mercy told her to focus on herself,she also encouraged her not to allow her parents get to her. 
Sarah packed her stuffs and was set for school,she was so happy even with the pressure from her parents. Her father had told her the previous night that once she packs her bags to leave for school,she should never return to his house. She didn't care about what he said, her dream was more important than her fear.
Mrs Mercy had given her some of the things she will be needing in school. She also bought her new clothes,shoes,books and food stuffs.
Since she was on scholarship, she won't be needing anything much. Her feeding and tuition fee was already paid for. Sarah was so happy to be in her new school even when she had no friends. One afternoon,when she was returning from class, she heard someone call her name.
Sarah,Sarah David......
