The Odds Are Against Me - Episode 8

I got to work that day and resumed my normal activities.  I wasn't thinking about Funmi that much compared to the other day. My colleagues and I, did our normal exchanges of pleasantries.  Mrs Awoyemi noticed my mood when she came to my office to say Hi.

"You look somehow cheerful today, but not entirely", she said.

"Do you read minds?". I asked and laughed. We exchanged pleasantries and other stuffs, before she left to her office. I concentrated on my laptop while trying to execute some things. Trying to catch up on one's I didn't do yesterday and one's I currently have.

It was weekend, I planned out my days to sleep all through, to ease myself off any stress after a hectic week both at work and my personal life. I got a call from Funmi. I gazed at my phone and hesitated before I picked the call. I felt she was disturbing me and doesn't have anything new to say except dragging old stuffs back and forth.

"Hello", I said with a dimmed voice.

"How are you? Are you angry at me", she asked and laughed.

"I am not. I think I should be asking you that", I replied.

. What about we see a movie together?", she asked.

"I don't think I'm interested", I replied in a low voice.

"You'll be. Get ready. I'm coming with a friend", she said and hung the call. I was left in the dilemma of getting dressed or wait for her till she comes and tell her I wasn't interested. I was overwhelmed by my feelings for her, and decided to take me bath. While I was getting dressed, there was a knock on the door. I had finished putting on my trouser, and was adjusting my T-shirt. I walked to the door, Funmi was there with her friend. I was awestruck by her friend's beauty, that I smiled. She was beautiful but not as Funmi. Funmi tapped me, while I was staring and dragged me out of their way. Her friend entered after her, I bolted the door and moved close to the sofa they sat on.

"Hey, how are you? You look beautiful", I said gesturing at her friend. She replied with an enchanting smile, that evacuated my plan to frown at Funmi when she gets to my house.

"You won't want to make me jealous here", Funmi replied. I gazed at her shockingly and laughed.

"Well, that's my friend Lola, I always tell you about", she said.

"Wow, you live up to your name. All Lola's I know are fine", I said.

"Is that you flaunting your flirting skills?", Funmi asked and laughed. Just compliments, I replied. Lola was smiling all through without saying a word. I left the sitting room, and walked into my room to get things I'd be needing and also spray perfume before we leave. I heard my door cracked opened slowly. I turned back and it was Funmi.

"Hey, how far? I'm almost ready", I said and smiled.

"Not that", she said and sat on my bed. I was done with the perfume, I dropped it on the table and picked up my wallet.

"What then?", I said, turned while facing her.

"Stop flirting with my friend. She is single", she said.

"That means she is ready to mingle. We can then mingle", I replied and laughed.

"No, you have me to mingle with", she said.

"Oh really? I thought you were bisexually in love", I said. We laughed. "I'm getting over it", she said. We left for the cinema and when we got there, the movie ticket which we wanted to watch had been sold out and we settled for another.

. After we were done, we went to eat. Funmi decided to order food and while she was away, Lola said Hi.

"I thought you were shy throughout our fun time?", I asked. She let out a huge smile, baring her dimples.

"Can you help me call my phone's number?", she asked. "I don't know where it's hanging inside the bag", she said again.

"Take", I handed my phone to her and she called her number. It rang, she brought it out and thanked me, as she handed the phone over to me.

"You are Afamefuna, right?", she asked.

"Yes, I am", I smiled. Just then, Funmi came with waiters carrying enough foods and drinks on trays.

"Is this not too much?", Lola asked Funmi.

"Err, you can talk after keeping mute for so long", Funmi replied. I laughed and Lola hissed. We started eating.

"I guess Afam gave you liver to eat, hence the courage to talk after so much hesitation", Funmi said. I laughed again.

"Babes, but you know I'm not quite nau. I was trying to be a good girl", Lola said.

"But you have been quite for a while. Whatever I'm saying here is pertaining this outing so far", Funmi replied.

"Wait, do you have a boyfriend", I asked Lola.

"Really?", Funmi said and I saw displeasure written on her face because of my question.
