The Odds Are Against Me - Episode 18
Funmi had gone to the United Kingdom, England for her programme. I was left at home with my children and work; I got a new boss during the week. Another female boss, but she was a white woman. When people started complaining about Ms. Awoyemi attitude a lot, the organization had to make her resign.
When my wife left to England, I made my children know that their mother would be back soon, whenever they asked. I played with them at my spare times.
*******************************************
On a Saturday, I got a call from an unknown number. I was sitting on the sofa watching television. Bisi our house girl entered the parlour holding Anderson and Bola who had bathed and were already dressed. I was meant to take them to their grand mother's house since they vacated from school on Friday.
"Good afternoon, Sir. We are done", Bisi said. I shook off the sleep, that held me hostage on the sofa in pretense of watching Television, and looked up, gazing at them where they were.
"Oh, all right". I said. My phone started ringing, Anderson ran to where it was and picked it up. He brought it to me and I collected it. It was an unknown number

. I answered.
"Hello, who is this?"
"So, all these while, you don't want to save my number. It's okay", a female voice sounding like Lola's own said.
"Is that Lola?", I asked in order to confirm.
"No, it's another person", she said, hissed and terminated the call. I was less concerned, as I told Bisi to bring Anderson along, while I carried Bola. We left the sitting room to the outside, our garage, where my car was packed, and we all entered except Bisi. My gateman opened the gate for me. Before we left, Bisi raised her two hands up, making a wave, and telling us goodbye, while Anderson waved back. I dropped them at their grandmother's place and I was back to the house quickly. I packed my car at the garage, and flung the car key to and fro while holding it in my hand, as I walked into the sitting room. I wanted to enter the kitchen to get a glass filled with water to quench my thirst, and someone called my name in the sitting room. I looked back and it was Lola.
"Oh, girl, I never knew it was you sitting there"
"If it's not me, who would it be? Abi, you are expecting another mistress?", she asked rhetorically, and stood up immediately.
"What if I am expecting one, what's your business?", I replied, while I moved close to her and our body clenched together. She laughed and removed her face.
"You can't stand the heat? Am I right?", I asked. She brought back her face immediately, held my body tightly and wanted us to lock lips together. I pushed her away, turned back to head to the kitchen, Bisi was at the door staring us. Immediately Bisi saw that I turned, she tried to pretended she hadn't been seeing what was happening. I ignored her and entered the kitchen. While trying to get my glass cup filled with water, she was cutting yam while making some body languages like someone that was in a danger. I moved close to her.
"Hope there is no problem?", I asked.
No problem, Sir", she replied. After I was done gulping down the glass cup of water, I left the kitchen to the sitting room. When Lola saw me, she tried to bend her head, I moved close and drew her head up.
"What?", she asked.
"I want to grant your wish today. What do you want me to do for you?", I asked.
"You are the guy here. Do anything you want for me. I don't want to seem desperate", she said. I burst into laughter, and then clapped.
"What have you been doing since? Pestering a married man is the height of desperation", I said.
"No, it's not.

. I have loved you when you were not married. And for me to still be here on your case for the past four or five years should have given you the signal of how much I love you", she said.
"But, you had a short stint in a relationship. Why? If you love me?", I asked inquisitively.
"Oh, cut me some slack, love. I wanted to cut you off, but I couldn't because I love you, that's the reason the relationship crashed", she said, positioned her head to my face and looked into my eyes closely. I cackled, and stood up.
"Sorry, girl. You can't get to me emotionally", I said. I left her in the sitting room and went to my bedroom. After ten minutes, I was back to the sitting room. Immediately, I entered the sitting room, Lola was still there and Bisi was coming out from the dining table.
"The lunch is ready", Bisi said.
"I think I am okay. Just eat enough you want to", I said to Bisi and gestured. I extended my hands to Lola, she hesitated before she held my hands and I dragged her up.
