Rose:

"You did it Rose. In few minutes you'll be a Williams!" Percy squeals from behind me while I rub on a little bit of red lipstick in front of the mirror. I smirk at my reflection. When Rose wants something she gets it. "You are one evil b*tch." Percy says and we both giggle. "I wouldn't say evil . Just driven." I turn to face her with my smirk firmly in place. "I've wanted this for too long. Now it's in my grasp. I'll savour it till the last drop. Starting with our first honeymoon in Italy then second in Paris. Maybe a third if I am feeling like it." I say smugly. "You are the talk of our clique, girl! Everyone wants to be you." "Of course they do. Those parties I didn't get invited to. Those exclusive spas the illegitimate daughters were restricted. I am going to own every single one of them now." I say with all venom. My mom and I have been casted out and marked dirty for years now for being the mistress and illegitimate daughter but not anymore. Oh, the feel of such power! They are going to bow at our feet. "But what about Derrick? He'll be back in few months." Percy's voice brings me back from revenge land and I just shrug. "He would have been a better catch but he's too slow

. His brother will have to do. After all mom said Grandma Catherine told her, the first brother to get married and birth a child gets the company. Getting pregnant shouldn't be a problem for me." "All I am saying is imagine how awkward it'll be when he returns." "Well. Nelson and I will be out of this community before then. Now stop depressing me and come help me arrange my dress."

Derrick:

One step. Two steps. Three steps. Everything seems to be in slow motion as I race inside the church. I didn't even wait to pay the taxi driver who brought me here and I can hear him yelling after me but I don't stop. Rose weds Nelson Rose f*cking weds Nelson!

It can't be my Rose but I have to confirm. The majestic looking wooden door of the cathedral is closed so I push on them and they come apart with a creak. Every eyes are on me. It's a big church but I can feel all the eyes staring at me. Looking. Wondering. Speculating who the underdressed party crasher is. I don't pay them any attention. All my attention is on the figures standing in front of the altar. I can clearly see Nelson, my f*cking brother in a designer suit looking at me with his mouth hanging open. I feel my legs slowly move forward. Taking me towards the motionless bride whose face is completely covered with a veil. The congregation is getting rowdy. People are standing up to capture this moment. Even the press is struggling amongst themselves to get a better angle. "Oga! Abeg give me my money! I don carry you all the way from GRA you no want to pay ba" I hear the taxi driver rant but I'm not deterred from my journey to the altar. "Derrick! What are you doing here?!" I think I hear Nelson say as I pass him. I reach the bride who is trying to back away from me but I grab her waist not too gently and flip the veil away from her face. Oh my f*cking gosh! Rose. "Derrick" she gasp and try to make a grab for me but I recoil in disgust. "Derrick you are causing a scene." I turn around to my brother and I don't know when I punch him in the face. Hard. He goes down with the force of the punch. Anger propels me and I lunge myself at him and grab the lapels of his suit. The crowd goes wild. "Derrick!" I feel someone grab a hold of my arm. That voice used to calm me but now it only fuels my hate and anger. I raise my fist to throw another punch when a beefy hand grab my wrist and with one pull, take me off Nelson. "Let me go! I am going to kill the bastard. Let me f*cking go!" I yell as I try to struggle with the hulk of a man. He doesn't even say anything. He just pull my hands behind me and push me out of the church where a car is waiting with it's door already open. This looks like a kidnap scene from a very bad movie. "What the hell?! Who the hell are you? I am not getting in! I am calling the police! This is kidnap in broad daylight!" I spit out and dig my shoes into the ground. "Get in the car young man." The ever calm voice of grandma Catherine makes me stop struggling as I turn back to stare into her cold eyes. Of course there's no emotion on her face but I know not to piss her more than I know I already have. The Williams don't wash their dirty linens outside and I just did. She walks pass me and settle down inside the car, her eyes telling me to do the same. I bite down on my bottom lip before biting the bullet by entering the car. The door is closed after me and suddenly the space feels too small with the look grandma Catherine's giving me. "Drive." She silently command and i feel the car pull out of the church. "You knew." I say after an uncomfortable silence. Grandma Catherine doesn't even look away from the window she has been staring out of for minutes now. "That you are back in the country? Of course I knew that." She says. "Don't insult me!" I spit out and she finally turn to look into my eyes. "Don't yell at me young man. I am still trying to calm myself down from the nonsense you pulled at the church." She grinds out, her eyes hard and scrutinizing. "Nonsense?!" "Twelve. That's how many prospective sponsors were at that wedding! Our rivals! Even the press!no What do they think of us now?!" She force out through clenched teeth. "The press? Rivals? Sponsors?! That's what you have to say after my own family just betrayed me? He married my woman for God's sake!" I yell. "Your woman wasn't forced to the altar. Your brother was able to put a ring on her finger faster than you can even get your degree." As usual, she doesn't cut back when she's laying it out for anybody. I look at her, my mouth gaping open. "Family. Doesn't that word mean anything to any of you in this fucking family?" I ask and I see fire flash in her eyes. "This f*cking family picked you up from the slumps when even your trash of a guardian sold you for measly N50,000. This f*cking family cleaned you up, gave you the clothes you wear and feed you, you ungrateful child!" She barks out and stare me down with her burning glare. I look away from her eyes and stare out the window at the normal people selling on the street and for the first time since I was given this life, I envy them. The sun may be harsh on them and they might not have a beautiful roof over their head but at least they know what a family is like. I watch as a man hold the hand of his young son as they both cross the road. I never had that. The only woman who has ever really loved me was my mother and I feel a deep yearning for her at this moment. "You know I thought you would be the one to take over the company after me, Derrick. I guess Nelson proved that he's better for the position by settling down with a wife." Grandma Catherine says and in this moment I feel nothing but hate for my family. I press down on the grey screen button. "Stop the car." I tell the driver. I see him ask permission from Grandma Catherine through the front mirror and I nearly scoff at how in control of everyone she is. Grandma Catherine nods and the car is brought to a stop beside the road. I don't wait for the door to be opened for me before I push it open on my own. I stare at Grandma Catherine for a few seconds before I push the door shut and hail a passing cab. I need to be with the only person who loves me right now.

Maya;

"Grandma! Grandma!" I shake her continuously but she doesn't stir. My heart skips several beats as I panic. No one's even home! What is wrong with her? She was fine when I left for work this morning and it's a few minutes past 9pm now. Where the hell is Angy? She was supposed to be watching grandmother. I place two of my fingers against her pulse point and sweet relief wash over me when I feel a pulse however weak it was. "Grandmother, can you hear me. We need to go to the hospital. I'm going to put you on my back now okay?" I say before trying to get her on my back. After several trials I successfully get her on her back and hurry out the house. Where do I get help now? Our little house is no where close to the road and I'll have to walk for long minutes to find a cab. We don't even have any neighbors seeing as we live just beside the town's cemetery and people often get scared of building a house here.

. I guess I have to walk the distance to find a cab with Grandma on my back. My legs are already threatening to buckle but I press on. "Oh Lord please send a helper." I send a silent prayer to the heavens as I try not to cave under the weight of grandma's body. Never has my prayers been so quickly answered! Right beside the cemetery's gate is an idle taxi. I can't see anyone in the driver's seat and the back windows are tinted. To hell with waiting for the taxi driver. I need to put Grandma down before I end up with a stroke of my own. Panting like an overworked bull I move over to the back of the taxi and with the last strength I can muster, pull open the back door. I stand with my back to the taxi and carefully plop Grandma unto the back seat only to hear a man scream from inside the taxi!
