Koni sank his claws deep inside the amanani’s throat and dismembered the neck from the body. He let out a satisfied growl as the amanani’s body disappeared in a wisp of smoke. Another one jumped into his back clinging to his muscled neck and Koni tried to buckle it off but it held on tight gnarling and biting into him.

The drizzling rains had turned into a hailstorm the moment they stepped out of their vehicles. The faint trail of Vuyanzi’s scent had been completely washed off, Koni tried to reach out for her but all was silent, no whisper in the breeze, and no sign for her.

All the entrance in the reserve had been closed off as per Roiman’s instructions . A team was already following the trail but no much result as they kept running into the amanani which seemed to infest have the forest.

As Roiman organized some warriors to prevent humans from accessing the forest so that they could have a smooth search. Koni couldn’t help but wonder which type of human would be stupid enough to go into a forest at night. True to Roiman prediction, there was a group of college students camping out in the forest, at night in the rain.

Koni couldn’t wait for the forest to be cleared. He shifted into his beast and charged inside the dark trees blindly with Manute close behind him

. His instincts were directing him to the caves find deep inside the forest. Roiman asked him to stop and wait for orders but Koni was beyond orders now, he wanted to reach his bride as soon as possible. Adrenaline was pumping in his body and when he stumbled inside a trap se by the amanani he welcomed it.

He backed into a huge mugumo tree and crashed the amanani clinging on his back against the rough bark. With a yelp the amanani dropped to the ground and Koni picked it up by its scrawny neck, tightening his grip on its pulse, with a little pressure the amanani would be dead but first Oni needed answer

‘’Where is my bride?’’ he screamed at its dismantled face. The amanani were disfigured in their natural forms, ugly and slimy. Their long bodies were covered with mucus all over. Koni was disgusted just looking at it. He now understood why the amanani demanded for the rainmakers to help them be able to possess human and animal bodies. The downside was that their strengths were limited. This night they didn’t try to possess human bodies in order to use their fill strength against the warriors.

‘’Warrior...your bride…’’ the amanani released a choked voice clawing on Koni’s arms,

‘’Where is she?’’ Koni released his claws and raised his right hand ready to strike the amanani.

‘’She…is going…to die,’’ a choked laughter and then the amanani tried more to move from Koni’s ever tightening grip, but Koni didn’t let it go. Without Koni knowing, he had managed to squeeze the life out of amanani. Its body disappearing in the wind.

Koni, save me Vuyanzi’s faint voice carried in the wind and Koni swiveled his head back so quickly to trace the origin of the voice. It had disappeared as soon as it had appeared.

‘’Koni why don’t we regroup with the others maybe they have found something,’’ Manute suggested releasing a deep breath; his body was stained with the blood of the amanani. He had fought hard.

‘’No, Vuyanzi is somewhere around here, I can sense her presence.’’ I can hear her calling to me, he wanted to add but stopped himself looking at the doubt that crossed Manute’s face.

‘’You can join the others if…,’’

‘’And leave you to enjoy all the fun, no way.’’ Manute chuckled and Koni was glad his friend was sticking out beside him.

‘’Koni Jasiri of the Ukiri Clan,’’ a voice shouted out from one of the ancient Mugumo trees that rose up into the dark night. Koni sharply looked up just in time for thunder and lightning to strike revealing another lion beast crouched among the low branches. Koni immediately knew he was an outcast.

What was up with the outcasts and high ground Koni wondered, first it was Bor and now this guy.

Koni snarled up the tree, ‘’Where is my bride?’’

The lion jumped down and crouched in front of Koni its canines glowing in the dark, its yellow eyes were filled with rage and Koni nearly went berserk when he smelled Vuyanzi’s scent on the warrior. He growled at the other warrior and crouched down too ready to strike. Manute was also at tense beside him.

‘’She is somewhere safe, I am a warrior too. I can never hurt a bride,’’ the outcast said flippantly, ‘’if you wish to see her again, you will listen carefully,’’

‘’By kidnapping her, you have hurt her. Where is she?’’

‘’Listen Koni, as much as Vuyanzi is a lovely bride and I would hesitate to mark her, that is not my current wish right now.’’ Koni growled and jumped at the warrior and they tousled in the wet grass. Growls and roars that were swallowed by the pounding rains. Koni managed to pin the other warrior down but Kaunda managed to scratch Koni face with his claws. Temporarily blinding him. Koni let out an angry growl and ignored his bleeding eye. He didn’t lose his grip on the outcast’s throat.

‘’I have a bone to pick with you Jasiri. You and not her,’’ the outcast heaved out through Koni ever encroaching fingers, he could barely breath.

‘’For the last time, where is Vuyanzi?!’’ Koni’s voice was hard but he couldn’t hide the desperation behind it.

‘’If you are so worried about her Jasiri, you would have marked her.’’ Koni released his claws and swiped at the other warrior’s neck but the outcast was fast. He entwined his legs across Koni’s neck and pulled him back making Koni fall down on the wet grass. By now his right eye was completely swollen and he couldn’t see clearly. Blood and rain water cascaded down his hairy face.

The outcast took this chance to kick Koni in his gut. Koni groaned in pain as he landed a few feet away from the outcast, his breath knocked out of his body.

‘’It is over Jasiri, you will perish. I will finish with you then mark your bride. Your lineage will be mine and I will control the Ukiri clan. The position of the Lion Chief will finally be mine like it was meant to be,’’ the outcast ranted standing beside Koni’s fallen body. His clawed feet on top of Koni’s heaving hairy chest.

‘’Koni,’’ Manute shouted trying to come to his friend’s rescue but he was attacked by a swarm of amanani that appeared from the dark abyss holding him back. Koni tried to sit up from his crouched position.

‘’You will never be the Chief of Ukiri clan or the Lion clan, your ancestors failed what made you think that you will be able to do it?’’ Koni spit out blood and tried to stand up but a hard kick to his chin stopped him again.

‘’What will you do Jasiri? I will finish you just like the way your father eliminated my father and the same way my father eliminated your mother,’’

‘’What. Did. You. Just. Say?’’ Koni‘s eyes glowered even hotly. He growled and rose up tackling the outcast to the ground. Koni punched the foul mouthed warrior who didn’t deserve the title warrior. The outcast didn’t surrender easily, he managed to wrestle Koni under him and administer some heavy blows on him too.

‘’My father always told me that your mama screamed as a little girl as she was being slaughtered like a chicken,’’ Kaunda laughed manically with his mouth full of blood.

No one talked evil about his mama. No one.

‘’Enough, this will be the end of you,’’ with strength that Koni couldn’t explain where it came from, he picked Kaunda up by his waist and threw him off. In a lightning speed he was on him again with a raised hand and all the claws long, sharp and ready to strike, ‘’I may not be an eliminator but I will kill you for going against the oath of the oracle. You killed human beings today and kidnapped a bride. My bride. You have to pay for this,’’

‘’Jasiri, how different are you from me if you strike me down?’’ Kaunda breathed deep as Koni’s fist tightened in his throat, his eyes were turning to the brown color and Koni growled in satisfaction knowing that the outcast’s beast was losing the fight, ‘’ Deep down we are both slaves to our instincts, the oracle made us killing machines and we are proving to be a very successful project.’’

‘’The oracle wanted us to protect humans and our brides,’’ Koni corrected him,

‘’No, the oracle created the amanani.’’

‘’That is not true, the oracle represents light and all that is good in the world, the amanani are dark creatures that are responsible for all that is evil around us,’’ Koni was sure his lessons were correct and he didn’t doubt that the outcast was a bitter beast that was out for revenge.

Kaunda laughed and spit out blood, ‘’if you believe that you are stupid as the whole Baraza la Wazee, the amanani and spirit warriors have the same origin but we were pitted against each other by the same people who conjured us,’’

‘’Enough of your nonsense, you will die,’’ Koni raised his hand higher ready to strike

‘’You will never see your bride again Jasiri. I am ready to face my ancestors whom you all abandoned,’’ Kaunda spat bitterly

Koni dropped his claws and then, ‘’Koni, stop,’’ Vuyanzi’s voice came through the rain. Koni thought he was hearing things but turning around, he saw Vuyanzi being held by another outcast by the arm and being dragged.

He quickly released Kaunda who dropped down like a limp doll. Manute was quick to stand guard against the outcast. Who was yet to catch his breath from being choked by Koni?

Koni walked towards the visibly shaken Vuyanzi and the outcast who was holding her like a shield. He had a mean knife on her throat.

……………………………..

Vuyanzi was soaked, her clothes torn from her body and her hair bundled fuzzily on her head but she didn’t look as bad as Koni, he was bruised and bloodied everywhere. With the lightning striking she could be able to see him.

At first Vuyanzi had been elated to see him alive. She had feared that he would be dead and she couldn’t bear the grief that came with that idea. Then she saw him chocking Kaunda the

At first Vuyanzi had been elated to see him alive. She had feared that he would be dead and she couldn’t bear the grief that came with that idea. Then she saw him chocking Kaunda, her kidnapper she knew she had to stop Koni. He couldn’t kill Kaunda. In fact he was a bridge way between Baraza La Wazee and the outcast. All this would be solved if they sat down and talked.

He had turned, he was a half man and half lion. He looked majestic even covered in blood. A warrior in the middle of a bloody battlefield.

His body was covered with hair, long and sticking to his body by the rain water which rain in river lets down his wide torso. He was tall, taller than she had ever seen him, with a long strong tail protruding from somewhere behind his muscled legs. His face had widened and he had dropped his sharp canines.

What caught her attention was the almost red hue of his eyes, he appeared murderous and on a war path. He didn’t spare her a glance even for a second, all his attention was on the warrior who was holding her.

‘’Let her go,’’ his voice was a deep growl.

‘’If you take a step closer, she will die,’’ the warrior directed the sharp knife to her throat and Vuyanzi swallowed hard when the cold sharp steel made contact with her skin.

Koni growled but that didn’t stop him from coming towards them, his steps measured, predatory, a murderous gleam in his eyes ‘’Let her go or else I will kill you,’’

‘’You are not an eliminator you can’t kill me,’’ the warrior started pulling Vuyanzi back with him, his knife digging into her throat.

‘’I will if you don’t let her go,’’ another growl.

‘’Please stop this,’’ Vuyanzi didn’t know who she was pleading with, Koni to stop his murderous rage or the warrior who held her.

‘’Shut up you stupid bitc…’’ he didn’t finish the words. Koni had gripped him by the throat and Vuyanzi collapsed on the wet ground breathing heavily. Koni had raised the warrior up with one of his hands and started to choke him out.

‘’Koni stop,’’ Vuyanzi tried to stop him, he couldn’t kill the warrior it was not right. He growled at her warning her to stay away but she didn’t.

‘’You can’t kill him, he is not your enemy,’’

‘’I have to kill them, they kidnapped my bride,’’ by now the choked man was limp like a noodle on Koni’s arms. But Koni hadn’t released them yet.

‘’They are innocent Koni, victims of fate, you can’t hurt them, listen to them.’’

‘’No. Never. They deserve to die,’’ Koni released his claws again ready to strike the limp warrior but a whooshing sound from the dark trees caught him by surprise and Vuyanzi sagged by him. Her remaining tattered clothes smeared by warm blood.

She was hit by an arrow.

In a span of seconds, the first warrior Koni had been fighting with, rose up as if from the dead and vanished into the forest like the wind. He had kicked Manute who was watching over him down and ran off into the dark trees. A group of Roiman’s warriors also managed to appear and give chase. The other outcast was slowly gaining conscience and surrounded by a group of Cheetah warriors.

‘’No,’’ Koni roared and held Vuyanzi’s body close to him.

‘’Koni,’’ she whispered, her breath coming out short and Koni felt tears prickling his eyes. Her cold hand rested on his cheek. She was cold.

‘’Yes, my bride,’’

‘’I feel so cold,’’ her teeth were now clattering, Koni pulled her closer, he couldn’t believe how unlucky he was. The moment he thought he had found her, she disappeared again. Koni couldn’t lose her.

The other warriors watched with crest fallen eyes but said nothing. The rain had turned into a slow drizzle and the winds stopped howling.

‘’Nothing will happen to you Vuyanzi, I promise you that.’’ Koni knew what he had to do. It was the only way to save his bride now. His beast was urging him to do it. Her eyes were losing focus and she was straining to look up at him.

‘’Am sorry about this sweetheart,’’ he whispered and opened his jaws. On a snap of two fingers, his canines had already sank into Vuyanzi’s soft neck and she let out a scream that was bound to wake up the dead.

Then everything went silent. Too silent. The drizzle also stopped and the first rays of the sun could be seen on the Far East horizon.

……………………………

Vuyanzi woke up startled. She was in a semi dark room with a fire burning in the middle of it. Squinting her eyes, she could see an opening on the far end of the room. It looked like the opening of a…cave? She was in a cave! Vuyanzi tried to swallow the panic that was threatening rising inside her.

The room was warm and she lying on furs. The furs were soft against her skin and so…so warm.

Light from the fire bounced off on the walls of the room. She could also hear the faint falling of rain in a distance and thunder booming.

She tried to sit up but a very strong arm pulled her closer to a warm hard body. Vuyanzi yelped.

. What? It was then the familiar scent assaulted her nose, morning dew grass and the definite musk of man. She looked down at the arm holding her waist and her eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets.

The arm was definitely not like a normal arm. Encircling her small waist was a big paw, (yes a very large paw) spread on her stomach.

No, it cannot be Vuyanzi thought, this must be a dream. Vuyanzi shook her head ignoring the warmth that was trickling her ear and sending shivers down her spine. She could feel a hard stare on her back but she refused to turn instead squeezing her eyes completely shut.

‘’Vuyanzi look at me,’’ a deep smooth voice rumbled behind her.

Sharply she turned around to the piercing gaze of Koni Jasiri or… not. The paw on her waist did not move they held on firmly as if letting her go was not an option.

Vuyanzi could only gape at the creature beside her in awe.

The normal reaction to seeing a man – beast was to scream and try to get away from it as much as possible. Yet Vuyanzi had the most intense need to run her fingers through the long darks strands of hair falling on his broad shoulders.

She should be scared of the canine teeth that were the same length as her index finger but she was not afraid. Deep down Vuyanzi knew that this creature, Koni posed no threat to her.

Koni’s eyes were trained on her, the volatile yellow like the savannah grass burning with an orange flame. His eyes were on her like a hawks’ eyes on a prey. Vuyanzi now understood why Koni was a predator.

……………………………
