“So, what do you do?” Victoria asked

“I’m a nurse” Nancy answered and Victoria squealed

“Really?” she asked and Nancy nodded in affirmation with an astonished look on her face

“My mum is a nurse. I so adore nurses” she said and Nancy blushed

“I do too” Brent said and Victoria cooed in a knowing way

“Awwnnn, you guys are so cute . You look great together” she said and Nancy flushed in embarrassment

“Wait, we’re not what you think…” Nancy got interrupted by Brent

“Not yet” he said and blushed lightly

“Ooh, ooh, I get it” Victoria said, making cute faces at the two who were now looking in opposite directions till they all burst into laughter.

They heard the sound of footsteps and looked ahead to see a woman approaching

“Only God knows what’s up this time around” Nancy said under her breath.

MADDY

I tried to open the door but it didn’t open. I removed the key, looked at it well, then re-inserted it into the lock, but it still didn’t open

. I pushed it with my body, banged it with my hand, but it still didn’t open.

What’s wrong with this thing now? Why won’t it open?

“The door is still not opening o” I shouted loud enough for the man outside to hear.

KENNIE

“Look, there’s a new person!” Tess shouted, ahead of me.

I held both ears with both hands

“Yeahhh” I replied for the sake of replying

“Come” Tess turned back and held me by the hand “there’s an angel in Ankara wrapper”
I shook my head

“I’m not blind. By the way, isn’t there something with you and angels today?” I asked

“Oops, you looked like you were though” she hissed at me then continued “So, who’s the woman then? You know her?”

“Not at all” I replied

“Let’s go and ask what’s up then. I don’t want to miss any gist” she said and with my hands in hers, she walked briskly, making me look funny of course.

When she slowed down, I slowly detached my hands from hers. What’s she eating that her hold is so strong?

“Huhh” Tess drawled for attention

“What’s happening here?” I asked, looking at everyone.

Tessie already sat, so I followed suite

“You can sit also” Nancy said, gesturing to the woman and she sat.

“So,” Nancy said “she got here just now and was saying… she’s here, let her say it herself”

“Hunn” the woman said

She doesn’t look or sound too learned, I said in my mind

“I just get here as this fine aunty say” the woman said and Tess nodded beside me.

Brent adjusted uncomfortably in his seat and I noticed, from the corner of my eye, Nancy patting his knee with a finger, probably calming him down from the ‘attack’

I cleared my throat“So, what’s your purpose of being here? Do you know anyone of us?” I asked

“No, I no sabi anybody o. Na my husband say make I come see the family of the lady him carry for back this morning”

  That got my attention

“Your husband? Who is he?” I asked

“Aah, my husband” she said

“Na Kunle him be.

I interrupted her

“So, what does he do to earn a living now?”

“Haa” she said “God never leave us o. One church wey dey near our face-me-I-slap-you did one programme and give my husband okada like six months ago. Na the church school our two girls dey go, ko da dem discount us”

“Wow” Tess said beside me

“Abi. Since then, na so we don dey go the church o. See, my name gan na Sherifat. Dem no think say I no be Christian, dem still give me enough money wey I dey use do small business. Walahi, God go bless them”

“Amen” we all echoed

“Ha” she exclaimed and covered her mouth “God forgive me o”

“Why?” Brent asked

“Pastor don say make I no say ‘walahi’ again ni” she smiled sheepishly

“Oh!” the rest of us exclaimed at different times.

“So your husband is the bike man that was rushed in with the lady and the driver, right?”

“Na so e be o” the woman replied.
