Imperfection - Episode 13

 

GRUMPY

“Your father!, see the way he's driving like a goat. Anuofia” I screamed at the top of my voice as I drove pass the bus that almost hit me from behind, all in the name of trying to pass another bus to get a passenger. 

Lagos bus drivers are annoying, rude and careless, they'll make you feel inferior with their words even when you're driving a Ferrari. 

I hissed loudly as I heard the ringing of my phone, making me wonder about what crawled up my ass this early morning for me to be grumpy like this. I parked the car at the safe side of the road before I dig my hand into my bag to retrieve my phone . It was an unknown number. 

“Hello, this is Pearl Adams speaking”

“Tell me you didn't save my number and I'll call your dad to tell him the marriage is over”

“Greg” I screamed out. “Sorry, my phone is not in a perfect condition this morning”That was one perfect lie, I had deleted his number one day out of annoyance. 

“Okay, you didn't say your goodbye before leaving”

“Would it have made a difference if I did?” I inquired 

“Is that really coming from the same person who almost ate my head because I didn't pick her call and arrived home late?, I'm Also human and I care”

“Whatever Greg” I don't really care if he care because we're humans. I've got lot to find out.

. Be safe, bye” He dropped the call and I felt guilty about what I just did. Maybe it was me who called for this by telling him about my plans yesterday. Maybe I sounded desperate to get his attention and that's really bad. Even if it's part of the plan, it's still too early. 

I continued my journey home till I got to my father's Villa in Lekki, more like he owns the whole of Lekki and Victoria Island. 

“Good morning, people of God” I greeted as I entered the house. My mom stopped what she was doing as she walked up to me and gave me a hug. I saw my dad too walking down the stairs with a huge smile on his face. 

Honestly, I have missed all this, being with my parent and getting this warm hug from my mother, watching my dad smile. I didn't even know I was crying until my mom used the edge of the wrapper to clean my face. 

“What's wrong, honey?” My dad asked with a worried kook. 

“Why did you get me married, dad?, I wasn't ready for it yet, I wasn't ready to leave you guys and go away. I wanted to stay with you” I said through tears. 

“Even if we didn't get you married, you would have still leave us one day” my mother said trying to console me

“But still, it was too early mama” My dad pulled me to the nearest couch while my mom took a seat beside me holding my shoulders. 

I sat down there waiting for my father to break the silence as he waited for me to calm myself down. “When did you regain your memory?” He queried 

“Did I ever lost my memory?” I questioned back 

“I can see you don't have it back yet. How did you get to know that something happened to you that night?”

“It was through an old friend of mine” I replied

“You have to listen attentively to what I'm about to tell you, okay?” I nodded

“That night, I was in Abuja while your mother was here in Lagos for an outing when we received a call from the school authority that you had an accident and you were admitted in a hospital, I called your mother instantly to discharge you from there and bring you to our family hospital in Abuja. On your way here, the doctor that followed you from Lagos mistakenly announced that you were dead. Which was true, the news went rampant and before I could do anything, your mother called back that you regained consciousness. We had to take care of you at home and then transfer you to Canada for your tertiary education” He suddenly held my hand as he looked into my eyes. 

“This one that I'm about to say might make you hate me forever. But few weeks after the incident, i got a call from the Williams. They told me that Greg confessed to it”

“What are you saying?, I don't understand you” 

“What I'm saying is that Greg was the one who attacked you.

. He threw a bottle at you” 

“So, you knew it was Greg who did it and you still got me married to him, why would you do that?, I'm your daughter for Christ's sake!!, why?”

“For forgiveness and healing sake. That's the two reasons why I got you married to Greg. He thought you died that night, he still thinks you're dead and God knows that fifty years from now he'll still hate himself for what happened. I knew a day like this will come up but we all never guessed it will be this soon. We want you to get to know Greg better before we tell you what happened so it will be easy for you to forgive him. At turn, making it easy for Greg to heal” He looked at me waiting for my reply. I couldn't say anything but to just keep looking at them. 

“Are the Williams aware of these too?” I asked

“It was them who brought up the idea” It was my mother who replied this time around. 

I got up from my seat and removed my bag,as I informed them that I was leaving. 

“You know one mistake you made was thinking getting me married will lead to forgiveness from my side, you were wrong dad, it only made me hate him more” 

I got into the car and I didn't have the strength to drive myself home, how I got back to Greg's place was a miracle as I couldn't get myself to stop crying throughout the journey. 

“You're back?, I thought you were going to sleep over” It was Greg who opened the door for me. I lifted my eyes to look at him and when I did, I could see the shock on his face when he realized I had been crying. 

“Just disappear from my life, Greg. You've done just enough. Please go away!. Just go!, Go!” I screamed at the top of my voice as I passed the whole aggression on him.
