I stared at the girl in front of me.

Her smile said it all, i'd done a nice job and indeed, she looked gorgeous.

She wore a long black gown with a slit at one end which accentuated her shape.

I'd packed her kinky hair in a tight bun that complemented her oval face, her makeup was perfectly done, the smoky eye and bright red lip stick gave her the look she'd been aiming for.

With one last look at the girl in the mirror whose sorrow, sadness and pain were well hidden beneath her deep brown eyes, I walked out of my room.

I turned twenty four today and my best friend thought it would be a nice idea to celebrate at the newest event center in town.

Twenty four years already.

I felt like I've lived for more.

I flagged down a taxi just outside my family home, a nice overrated bungalow I'd inherited after my mother's's death.

She had died of ovarian cancer on my seventeenth birthday and now that I thought of it, my life has been filled with loneliness even from its tender beginning.

I'd moved in with my grand parents who had initially wanted nothing to do with me after her burial.

I shivered as I recalled my stay with them.

Our first meeting had been on my mother's death bed.

It was clearly evident that they despised me and they never went a day without reminding me just how ungrateful and inconsiderate my mother was.

At nineteen, my saving grace came in the form of a package—my inheritance.

I'd known something was off.

The huge sum written in the check and the deeds to a house Mama told me nothing about said it all.

But they were mine.

"Lakota events center." I told the middle aged driver.

He muttered something under his breath.

"Excuse me?" I said with a frown.

"500 naira. Take it or leave it." He replied harsly.

I frowned harder

. The rate at which drivers were taking out their frustrations on their clueless passengers was swiftly becoming irritating.

And since I was already fifteen minutes late, I  got in, whispered a small prayer to which I heard a mocking laughter.

I refused to get pissed off.

It was my birthday after all
