Jackson

My cell phone vibrated in my breast pocket. I brought it out, a frown appearing on my face as I read the content of the message sent.

I dug my fist on my office desk, the pain did nothing to dull the ache in my heart.

"Sofia." I called from my office.

My secretary came rushing in, her heels making an annoying noise which only magnified my anger.

"Cancel all my appointments." I said not bothering to spare her a glance. "You can leave."

"B-but you have a meeting with Mr...."

"Are you deaf or simply dumb?" I growled out . My patience ran thin for stupidity and if she wasn't careful, she wouldn't have a job to come back to by tomorrow.

"S-s-sorry Sir."

I brushed her away with a wave of my hand, my mind far too occupied with other things.

I dialed James number, like most times it was forwarded. With a deep sigh, I typed a quick text and sent.

His reply came almost immediately.

*********

His bald head was the first thing I noticed.

I signaled him over to the corner booth I'd reserved for us.

We were at Crusties, an eatery some kilometers away from the police station.

I got up, stretching my hand for a handshake.

"How you doing son?" He asked as we shook hands. He had a light grip and a rather calm voice for someone with his kind of job.

"Bad and you?"

"Worse." He replied.

We both sat down.

A waiter approached us immediately.

"Just tonic water for me."

"And me too." James said.

A deafening silence ensued after the waiter left

. I drummed my fingers impatiently on the table as I waited for him to speak.

"Uh, I'm guessing you saw the first text." He said slowly.

I nodded in response.

He loosened his tie which was odd considering that the AC here was on. Observing him closely, I  noticed that he looked extremely stressed out. He needed a shave and the frown lines on his forehead were so prominent. It brought questions to my already filled mind. "I don't know how to break it down to you Son. We just can't involve her anymore." He finished with a sigh.

The ache in my heart intensified.

She was our only clue. A key to unlocking the mystery behind my brother's death.

"She looks so innocent although in my line of work, we learn not to believe what we see...." He continued.

I simply nodded, my mind already far away.

How was I going to break the news of John's death to our sick mother?

"Jackson." James called, his voice snapping me back to reality.

I hadn't even realized our order was here.

I opened the tonic water, finishing it at a gulp which still did nothing to help my aching heart.

"Why can't we involve her?" I asked as I dropped the empty bottle on the table. It was a question I'd been dying to know the answer to since I got his text message.

He opened his tonic water with shaky hands. "She has connections." He stated.

I stared at him with disbelief, anger building up within me as I wondered what exactly happened to the ruthless investigator I'd met three weeks ago.

"That shouldn't stop you. You're simply doing your job." I said with a frown.

He shook his head hard, "You don't understand.! He said with a shaky voice. I watched him look around, and when he felt it was safe enough, he leaned closer, a hand covering his mouth slightly as he whispered.

"She's David Nelson's kid."
