Fixated - Episode 4
Rose
Fifteen years ago
I was seven the first time we met
Mama and I had gone shopping for my birthday gown and coincidentally, he'd been there with his family.
I didn't understand the sudden change of mood and the way Mama held my hand tightly as they exchanged pleasantries.
"Stay here. I'll be back." Mama said.
I watched her leave with the strange man that looked like Santa Claus, my heart drumming nervously as I was left with his family.
My discomfort did not go unnoticed.
A soft hand found its way to my shoulder. I looked up, my eyes meeting ones that looked similar to my Mom's— kind and full of love.
"What's your name." She asked with a warm smile.
It encouraged me to speak.
"Rosalie." I replied slowly. I mentally hi–fived myself for getting it right this time.
Mama would be proud. I thought.
"Smart and beautiful." She praised.
I smiled sheepishly and mumbled a thank you like Mama taught.
My gaze was drawn to the girl by her side. She was really pretty and looked my age although she was taller.
"Oh, this is Vanessa, my daughter." I heard the kind lady say.
"Hi." I said with a smile and an awkward wave

. I was a shy kid but I loved making friends.
I got no reply except a nasty frown that found its way to her face.
My smile dropped.
I looked up at her mom who gave me an apologetic smile. It confused me.
"Mummy." Vanessa called, her voice reminding me of the main character in my favorite cartoon.
Her mother leaned down to hear the poorly whispered words of her daughter.
"Why does she look so much like me?" She'd asked.
Her mom drew back.
A fake smile appeared on her face as she tried to maintain her composure.
I saw the kindness and love fade from her eyes.
"Let's wait for your daddy outside." Her voice was deadly low but audible.
I was filled with confusion as I watched their retreating figures.
Mama came back some minutes later, her eyes almost red. "Let's go." She said quickly.
I didn't want to.
I wanted to understand what was going on.
"Let's go!" She shouted.
I felt my eyes water as she grabbed my hand and dragged me out of the shopping mall.
We didn't buy my birthday gown.
