Zakia
The Judge was a petite woman whose expression was quite difficult to penetrate, and right below her huge desk were two Lawyers: One for me, and the other against me. It was just like I'd seen it in the movies, and perhaps, the whole thing would've been more intriguing, if I wasn't standing in the makeshift cage, guarded by two security officials, as the accused.
"Silence!" The Clerk had already yelled a few dozen times, with the Judge, hammering hard on her chestnut-coloured table likewise, and yet, the side conversations from the small crowd behind me wouldn't cease.
Not that I could blame them anyway.
For a case as serious as committing murder, even I knew better than to be hopeful of the eventual outcome.
"Your Honour," My Lawyer started calmly, regardless of the disapproving whispers, readjusting the black gown that seemed way too oversized for his lanky form. "Before I go any further, I'd like you to give my client audience . I'm positive she has a lot to say to this court.." He trailed off, sparing me a brief, assuring glance.
"Go ahead," The Judge returned quite easily, but with her curious gaze suddenly refusing to shift from mine.
At that moment, I got overwhelmed by a pang of apprehensiveness. I'd never liked being the centre of the wrong attention, whilst the fixed gazes upon me weren't exactly helping my situation either..
Everyone wanted to listen to what my eighteen-year-old criminal self had to say, and I could already feel my eyes getting blurred with the salty tears I'd initially been holding in.
"My name is Zakia Ibrahim," I finally began, "-and this is my story.."
