...Too deep in her reverie, Kari did not hear Jide talk to her.

"Kari, are you alright?" Jide asked after noticing her sudden absent mindedness.

"What? Yes yes. I very much am."

"Sure?" he pressed sitting down, trying to read her expression.

"Sure. Sorry did you say something?" she asked back trying to hide her thoughts.

Jide smiled . "I want to know if this is all the information you got."

"Oh yes, that's all of it for now," Kari replied abruptly, avoiding eye contact with him.

Laura's footsteps were heard as she descended the stairs.

"This friend of your's we talked about was Laura?"

"Yea. Surprise you remember her."

"I never forget a face," he replied focussing on the approaching Laura by his left. "Hello Laura, we meet again."

"Hello," she replied dryly as she passed across him to take her seat.

"How are you?"

"I'm well," she replied picking up a magazine to appear busy.

"Great. Thanks for letting us meet in your home, it's quite a lovely place."

"It wasn't like I had a choice." Finally looking up she asked, "So why are you here?"

"Laura," Kari called before Jide could answer his question. "Jide and I are working on John Malik's mystery as you already know."

"You mean the same mystery you were forbidden to dare?"

"We've been through this before

. I don't like you bringing it up in the presence of a visitor."

"Listen Laura," Jide cut in. I understand your apprehension. But I'm here to help not the other way round."

"Help you say? Do you know what sanctions awaits her if this help of your's gets to the knowledge of the SIB?"

"Well that's simple. I won't tell and I know you won't either, so there, no one's going to know."

"He's right, we can trust him," Kari chipped in wondering herself why she said that so easily and also if she could actually trust him.

"And why would I believe that?" Laura responded not wanting to see reason.

"Because we have the same goal, I'll save the details."

"Come on Miss, let's give this a try," she still found herself persuading her friend.

After a pause Laura said, "If Kari gets hurt in this young man, you will have me to cross swords with, and I meant that."

Kari and Jide smiled.

"Only shows how much you truly adore your friend. Not to worry you won't need no crossing swords with anyone. You have my loyalty, I assure you."

"And we appreciate that right Laura, we are a team?" Kari asked her expecting a positive answer.

"Team," echoed Jide, nodding his head.

"Laura?"

"We are," she mumbled after some time, amidst grudges.

"Good."

"Quite a relief to know." Back to issue of today. Kari, to hear from an insider, were there any finger prints on the bars, the body of the victim or wherever?"

"There was none at all. For once I almost believed it was suicide, but for the fact that the weapon was not in sight."

"It wasn't suicide, the suspect was murdered in cold blood. Apparently his boss could not risk his silence, you were crushing him too hard and the outcome would have been disastrous."

"How they knew that is still puzzling to me, and that killer is way damn smart. Do you know that not even the locks of any of the three cell doors leading to where Malik was detained was broken?"

"If that is true, it means he had the keys."

"How could an outsider who isn't part of this organization possess the keys to a cell?"

"That only points to one thing."

"No, please that can't be possible."

"I'm sorry Kari, though painful to admit but it could have been one of you."

"You can't be serious Jide," blurted Laura who had been unconcerned throughout thier discussion. "How can you even suppose that there is a traitor in the SIB, you are really something else."

"Laura can you bet on the sincerity and transparency of everyone you work with at your office?"

"Well, though there are bad people everywhere but..."

"That settles it then," Jide interrupted her, an action that maddened Laura so much that she was going to protest further but for Kari's pleading eyes. "Now I discovered something in his financial records," Jide continued without paying attention to her fury.

"Which is?"

"In the last two years he has been depositing some huge amount of money into his account by himself at the beginning of each month."

"Yes i noticed that too, Could it be he was on someone's payroll?"

"Most likely so," Jide replied.

"Come one people, it is already an established fact that the deceased suspect belonged to a syndicate. It therefore shouldn't be a thing of discovery if he has been on some monthly allowance of some sort," Laura said with repulsion.

"Laura, if we must find out anything, even the tiniest of details must be taken into serious consideration."

"That's right," Jide concurred. "Also, apart from the instances where he deposited the money by himself, two different people equally deposited money to this account at random dates, but one of them did on three different occasions. if I'm right he might be linked to the syndicate."

"How certain are you?"

"Almost completely. Now see this, I remember vividly that there was a bomb blast at the city central square on the 1st of october 2016. And it is recorded here that one the 30th of september at about 4:25am, this account was credited with 500,000 Naira by a name called Pitcher Silva."

"That doesn't make any sense," said Kari.

"Secondly, there was another bomb blast at the grand opening of the Wonder Park on the 26th day of march this year. On the 25th the same Pitcher Silva paid in same amount of money into the same account."

"I can recall the April bombing because the 26th when it occurred was my father's birthday. Jide just hold on. What are you trying to make of this?"

"Yes please, where is this going?" Laura appeared really interested for the first time.

"That is not all, you just wait till you hear the shocking side of it. When was Malik caught with the explosives?"

"More than a week ago."

"From the statement of the case here, it reads 15th of August. Ladies, the same Pitcher Silva paid in 150,000 Naira into this account on that morning."

There was dead silence in the room as both ladies tried to process the new information given.

"You think he was responsible for those two attacks, and he was paid to carry them out?" Kari asked in a low voice.

"And if that be the case, Pitcher Silva is the new clue."

"This is deep," was all Laura could finally bring herself to say.

"Indeed, how come I never saw all these the whole time? It was just right there staring at my face," cried Kari.

"Because they say two heads are better than one."

"In as much as I'm blown away by this new discovery, permit me to ask, how are you so accurate with these dates?" questioned Laura intending to find faults.

"I'm a freelance crime investigator, I always keep dates especially of unsolved cases," he replied with pride.

"Weldone Jide, but who is this Pitcher Silva, and how do we find him?"

"Wait a minute," Laura retorted. "Are we certain that this Pitcher could be a clue? This might just be a coincidence."

"If it is a coincidence, it's definitely worth checking," Kari shunned. "But then how do we go about it?"

"I'll find him"

"What?" Laura exclaimed, this sounds more like a wild goose chase to me.

"How do you intend to do that?" Kari ignored her focusing on Jide.

"I am not without my ways my dear you just relax," Jide replied. Then looking at his watch he continued. "Now ladies, I think we have made enough progress for one evening. I have stuffs to catch up with, I will give you tangible feedback by the week," he said standing up.

"What can I say, thank you so much for putting us on the right track. I really would not have been able to uncover this alone." Kari said standing up to meet him.

"I told you I was going to help, I still stand to fulfill that promise. One thing you both will do for me, keep this a secret, no one must know i'm helping you."

"That's fine by us,"

Before leaving, he turned to Laura, "Thanks Laura for the audience, you are a good friend."

Laura feigned a smiled and mumbled a "Bye."

"I'll see you to the door," Kari offered, and they both moved out.

On the drive to his motel room, Jide could not help but feel victorious at his success. He got the girl now to his mission and she was following every step of his ride, that to him was a perfect start. Then the name rang in his memory as he uttered it aloud, Pitcher Silva. This wasn't a coincidence like Laura had feared, anyone connected to John Malik must be connected to the syndicate. He sighed as he realized how difficult finding information about the new lead may prove to be. He couldn't ask Zuri's help, he will smell a rat and hell will let loose on him before he was ready. All these will come to an end someday, he concluded as he negotiated a bend. He will find out who the kingpin is, but right now he needs to find out all he can about Pitcher Silva, it might just be a stepping stone. In doing that, he realized he needed to be weary of people watching him, the syndicate was too large and dangerous to comprehend.
