More than a week after her father's death, misery and tears was still the order of living for Kari. She felt so alone, how quickly she had turned to be an orphan. Her dad had been everything to her, no amount of consolation could quell her grief. The SIB and the police had been on their very best yet they had not been able to come up with a clue as to who killed her father and why. Jide on his part still strongly suspected his death had something to do with their private investigations, but he couldn't voice out his suspicion to the SIB for fear of being indicted even though he was always been called at every point of their investigation as he was present in the crime scene . If Jide's hunch was right she wouldn't know how to forgive herself, but then again, how could he be right when no one knew what they were unto. It was all so complicated. Her confusion fuelled her grieve so much so that she would sometimes be found staring into space. Her world crumbled into so many pieces. She needed answers to so many questions, as an investigator and also as a bereaved child. The number that called her that faithful evening could not be traced as it was an anonymous caller. The circumstances surrounding her father's death was too suspicious to take lightly. Jide and Laura made it a duty to always be with her

. Imoh on his part tried his best too as did all her loved ones, but Paul was absent and unreachable throughout this horrible phase of her life, perhaps enjoying his leave got the best of him.

Laura sat on the reading chair in Kari's room as she watched her sleep soundly. She had been up all night, obviously crying out her heart. It was really a difficult time for her. Everywhere was calm except for Jide's voice which could be heard in the living room trying to put finishing touches to the funeral arrangements. His commitment throughout this period awed her. He was always at their beck and call, always present and this had given Kari so much hope and strength. He was really an angel.

"How's she?" Jide asked, breaking into her thoughts as he came through the door.

"Oh, She's still asleep," she answered exhaustively.

"It's a good thing she's able to have a peaceful rest after this while. And you, how are you holding up?" he walked towards her.

"I barely have any strength left Jide, it's that bad. I mean I have never seen anyone die before not even my own dad, let alone someone as close to me as Kari's father, it's an experience I will never forget quickly."

"I understand," he said putting an arm on her shoulder. "It's quite a shock to me too. Though I never met or knew the man prior to his death, nevertheless he's human. But you see, in spite of the way we feel we both must be strong for kari as we are her only family now."

"That's right. I've been meaning to ask what her dad meant when he wished Kari was his. Is it because he was going to die? Because I hear people who are close to their graves speak strange words."

Jide chuckled bringing his hand down from her shoulder. "You haven't lost your sense of humor at all Laura, where did you ever hear that?" Laura made her usual face and pouted. "Well, I really don't think that was an empty statement neither did it have anything to do with his death, there's more to it than that. But before we draw any assertions, we need to get to the lady he directed us to first."

"Yes, I think so too. But when would that be?"

"After the deceased have been laid to rest, I'll start tracking her down."

"Ok. But why are you helping Kari this much, we haven't even known you long enough but you seem to have sacrificed so much for her and are still ready to do more, why is that?"

"No special reason exactly,"he chuckled again putting both hands in trouser pocket. "I immediately got interested in her case, and every other thing followed as you know," He lied.

"Just that?"

"Of course, we are friends aren't we? It's enough to make me do everything in my reach for the comfort of you two. Now miss detective in the absence of any further questions, I need to go out to conclude on some arrangements, call me as soon as she awakes alright?" he said turning to leave.

"Ok." she smiled as she felt a great friendly warmth for him for the first time. "Do be careful Jide."

"I will." he said without looking back as he disappeared into the passage way his steps fading away as he hurried on.
