A loud bang woke Vuyanzi up. She woke up to find herself on the bed alone. Koni was already on the bedroom door opening it. Vuyanzi tried to stand up but Koni only looked back at her and shook his head, motioning her to stay behind. He was shirtless and his slacks were hanging low on his waist. Vuyanzi remembered what had transpired the night before and her face grew warm.

‘’Stay here,’’ he didn’t wait for an answer, he was out of the room. Vuyanzi quickly scrambled out of bed after him.

It was early in the morning and the sun was not up yet . The air was chilly on Vuyanzi’s naked arms so she wrapped the sheet around her shoulders and followed Koni’s broad back out of the room.

The bang was coming clearer as they approached the front door. Koni looked back at her and shook his head, Vuyanzi shrugged her shoulders and urged Koni to open the door. Koni motioned her to go behind a huge book drawer that stood near the hallway. Vuyanzi reluctantly did so and watched as Koni opened the door.

Uncle Liyai came in breathing fire and Vuyanzi felt energy leave her body. Instinctively she pressed herself more close to the bookshelf. Willing herself to hide away from her uncle’s wrath.

A bulky looking guard was behind his uncle.

‘’He is stubborn Mr. Jasiri

. He claims he is the uncle to Miss. Vuyanzi Amani,’’ he stated to Koni.

‘’It’s okay Jaffar,’’ Koni assured the guard who nodded his head tersely and walked out. Koni closed the door.

‘’Mr. Jasiri, I have come for my niece.’’ Vuyanzi’s uncle stated stamping his feet on the ground completely foregoing greetings.

‘’Vuyanzi come out,’’ he shouted and Vuyanzi had to curb the need to respond to her uncles frantic calls. She pressed herself deeper into the shelf.

‘’She is a sleep, why don’t you wait here,’’ Koni was trying to block uncle Liyai from advancing further into the house. His uncle might be stopped physically but through the bookshelves Vuyanzi could see her uncle’s eyes roaming the house. He was seething with rage.

‘’Let me pass Mr. Jasiri or I will not hesitate to push you aside,’’

Vuyanzi knew her uncle’s strength was no match to Koni’s. She had to intervene before things escalated. Without thinking she came out of her hiding place.

‘’Uncle,’’

It took a second for uncle Liyai to look at Vuyanzi’s covered by an oversize bed sheet and Koni’s half-dressed ness to come to a bad conclusion.

He turned to Koni, ‘’what have you done to her?’’ Vuyanzi could see his fists tightening. She jumped between the two before blows were thrown.

‘’Uncle it’s not what you think,’’ Vuyanzi released the sheet to reveal a loose an long decent nightshift she was dressed in. the  previous night Koni had carried to bed and cuddled her to sleep nothing else had happened. Even though part of her wanted something to happen.

‘’what do you think am thinking Vuyanzi?’’ her uncle was not convinced

‘’Uncle…’’

‘’You get attacked by hyenas, if the new reserve manager was doing his job maybe you wouldn’t be attacked. Move aside Vuyanzi let me deal with this,’’

‘’Uncle stop this, Koni did nothing wrong, he was trying to protect me,’’ Vuyanzi was frantic, her uncle was drawing some very wrong assumptions.

‘’From what?’’

‘’From whatever killed her parents twenty years ago,’’ Koni who was silent all this time spoke up. He was standing behind her stoically, all tensed up. Vuyanzi could feel tension dripping away from him.

‘’What?’’ both Vuyanzi and her uncle turned towards him in surprise.

Vuyanzi looked at his uncle facial reaction to see what he would say or do.

‘’Oh nyanya, I am sorry you had to find out about your parents death like this,’’ Uncle Liyai’s face softened and the anger dissipated. Vuyanzi could see the frown lines on his forehead drawing.

‘’It’s okay uncle, I don’t blame any of you for what you did. It would have been better if you had talked about my parents and not make it a taboo subject.’’

Uncle Liyai looked away guiltily,’’ I know, forgive me and your grandmother. We were wrong,’’

‘’Vuyanzi why don’t you go…’’ Koni started saying but was cut short by Uncle Liyai.

‘’I have come to pick Vuyanzi up, she will be going with me home,’’

‘’With all due respect uncle, Vuyanzi can’t go anywhere, her life is in danger and she needs my protection,’’ Koni protested.

‘’I am her uncle I can take care of her Mr. Jasiri. We appreciate your efforts but if Vuyanzi is in any danger, we will report it to the police and let them do their work,’’

Koni scoffed, ‘’I have better security than the police,’’

‘’Koni maybe I should go with my Uncle…’’ Vuyanzi started to intervene again. It would be better to go with her uncle, it would calm him down.

‘’No,’’ Koni adamantly refused. Vuyanzi was not surprised Koni refused to let her go.

‘’And who are you to stop me, I could report this as kidnapping. Vuyanzi should be in school and not traipsing all over the country,’’

‘’No uncle, he didn’t kidnap me. I followed him here in my own volition,’’ Vuyanzi held his uncle’s hands willing for him to understand. She didn’t want this issue to go on. She also didn’t want to choose between her uncle and Koni.

If she decided to stay with her uncle, she would be endangering his life. Vuyanzi didn’t want that. At the same time if she stayed with Koni her uncle would be disappointed in her.

‘’And besides Vuyanzi is mchumba wangu (my fiancée). We are planning to go meet my father today,’’ Koni declared and Vuyanzi nearly broke her neck turning around to look at Koni.

What was all this mchumba business? Koni only shrugged his wide shoulders and smirked at her. Feeling satisfied after putting her in a tight spot.

‘’Vuyanzi is this true,’’ her uncle’s voice was dangerously low.

‘’Uncle…I,’’ Vuyanzi was lost for words she didn’t know what to tell her uncle.

‘’Since when?’’ uncle Liyai fired another question taping his foot on the carpeted floor.

‘’Since the launching of the new animal reserve. I have liked her since then and now I want to take this relationship to the next level,’’ Koni answered on her behalf and Vuyanzi could not believe what he was saying. They had not talked about this.

It did not help that all the time he was saying this, he was looking directly onto her eyes and her heart was dancing at his words. He appeared to be genuine.

‘’Vuyanzi is this true?’’

Vuyanzi looked at Koni who raised his eyebrows as if challenging her to deny everything he had said.

She was definitely between a stone and a hard place. If she denied what Koni was saying her uncle would whisk her away as quick as possible and not turn back therefore endangering his life. She had seen first-hand what the amanani could do. Vuyanzi could not bear losing his uncle. If she agreed to what Koni was saying she was setting herself up for a heartbreak. Staying with Koni would only lead to attachments, attachments that would later hurt her.

Vuyanzi made up her mind, she would chose heartbreak over her dearest uncle getting hurt.

‘’Yes uncle Koni is right,’’ Vuyanzi said in a cool voice and Koni frowned slightly at her. He clearly was no expecting her to be meek to all of this.

‘’Are you sure this is what you want Vuyanzi?’’ uncle Liyai voice was full of resign and disappointment. He was coming to accept her decision at last.

‘’Koni can I talk to my uncle for a minute?’’ Vuyanzi looked at him pointedly, she wished for him not to eavesdrop at their conversation.

‘’Sure, I will be in the next room.’’ he then left.

Vuyanzi helped his uncle to sit down on a soft sofa.

‘’Nyanya are you sure this is the best decision you are making?’’

No, Vuyanzi wanted to scream but she didn’t instead, ‘’Yes, I like Koni and I agreed to be mchumba wake (his fiancée).’’

Vuyanzi looked at the troubled eyes of his uncle and looked aside. She hated to make her uncle worry about her but he would get over it. As long as he was safe. She would go ahead with whatever Koni was planning and deal with him another time.

Uncle Liyai looked at his downcast niece and felt pain lodging in his heart. He hated how she felt responsible for everyone. Clearly Koni had something on her something that made her make this hurried decision. Lishevi had tried to convince him that Koni was doing more than helping Vuyanzi and he should not meddle in their relationship but he couldn’t watch this charade go on much longer.

On his brother’s funeral, he had promised to watch over Vuyanzi as his own daughter and he tried his best. Vuyanzi was easily the best niece an uncle would ask for. A bit mischievous and cheeky she was, reminding him of his roguish brother and his never antics. Adamu was so full of life a trait that Vuyanzi always possessed but now shadows surrounded her ever bright eyes.

Mr. Jasiri’s declaration had taken her by shock and that was evident. To his surprise she didn’t object his statement. He hadn’t expected that. It was all new to him. He didn’t for a minute believe the wind whirl romance between them.

Lishevi had said Vuyanzi’s life was in danger. She was better off with Koni than with them, he didn’t help the helpless feeling he got when he thought about the amanani. He couldn’t protect her from the ferocious beasts. At first when he learnt about the amanani, he didn’t believe a minute of the story then Adamu was attacked and he saw the marks on his brother’s body. He believed it. He had never seen such angry marks on anybody in his life. His brother’s body was nearly not visible, his body mutilated.

When Vuyanzi was attacked by amanani, he knew it was a fact. He saw the bite marks on her neck and leg when she was unconsciousness. They had the same signature as the attack on her parents. The ghosts from the past had come to haunt her. She had accepted to let Vuyanzi stay with Koni for her own protection.

‘’Uncle…’’ Vuyanzi called him out from his deep thoughts.

‘’Yes nyanya,’’ he was fond of Vuyanzi. He looked at her trusting eyes, they were back to bright and shiny. Just the way he was used to them. She looked at him with much trust and adoration. The cheeky twinkle was also back. At that moment he decided he would do right by her. If he couldn’t protect, he would make sure that Koni was at least a straight forward man.

‘’Koni is a good man, he has helped me a lot,’’ yes he has, Liyai agreed. The problem was that Koni was a half man and half beast.

‘’Then I support you and him,’’

‘’You do?’’ Vuyanzi was surprised by his uncle’s answer.

‘’Yes, I will have a talk with him first. I have to make sure he treats you right. He has to know I will scold him if anything happens to you,’’

‘’O…kay, let me call him uncle. I will prepare some breakfast for you.’’ Vuyanzi got back but her uncle held her arm back.

‘’Your parents loved you Vuyanzi. Your father never stopped talking about you on the phone. Or your mother. He would have been proud of you,’’

The sweet words managed to make a tear drop from her eyes. She gave her uncle an impromptu hug before walking out. A gait in her movement.

………………………

‘’An attack?’’ Koni groaned on his phone. He gripped the phone tight, nearly breaking it. He was hoping for a quiet weekend with Vuyanzi but even that was too much to ask. Her uncle this morning and now this.

‘’Yes, Vuyanzi’s house was vandalized. It was a good thing nobody was in the house. a neighbor raised alarm when she saw hooded people running away. We managed to track the attackers to one Kweyu Kisiki.’’ Sudi reported

‘’Kweyu Kisiki the boy that was choking Vuyanzi on the first night we met?’’ Koni had always felt that Kweyu’s spite for Vuyanzi was deep born but he wasn’t sure until now. Koni didn’t like this.

‘’Yes, he had paid some hooligans from the town to attack Vuyanzi apparently. When they didn’t find her home they vandalized her home. Apparently he had been tracking her for some time and got mad when he heard she had left town.’’ The more Sudi talked the more Koni got furious.

‘’Make sure they are taken to the police station. And have eyes on Kweyu I have a feeling he is a trouble,’’ Koni instructed.

‘’Ahead of you boss, he is not going anywhere,’’ Sudi assured him.

Koni gave out a few orders and the call ended just in time for Vuyanzi to poke her head inside the room.

‘’Uncle Liyai wants to see you,’’ she informed him closing the door, her eyes sharp on him. Koni felt like he was in trouble. He couldn’t ignore how satisfied he was when he saw how her eyes roamed all over his body. Behind all that anger, heat and desire bloomed. Vuyanzi was like a ripe fruit ready for plucking, he couldn’t wait to show her how he was yearning for her.

But that will have to wait, currently she was furious at him.

‘’Why did you lie to him?’’ she folded her arms on her chest and pinned him with an accusing look. Instead of appearing threatening, she looked adorable. Cute.

‘’I didn’t lie Vuyanzi, I want to introduce you to my father. He is expecting us this evening,’’

‘’Really? I thought you were saying that just to put on a show before my uncle,’’ she dropped her arms and the guarded look on her eyes. Koni approached her and pulled her into his arms.

. She was stiff for a second before relaxing on his arms.

‘’Why would I lie about that?’’ Koni was enjoying his warmth and how well they fit. She was made just for him.

‘’I don’t know Koni, what you said about me being your mchumba, did you mean it too?’’

Koni held her at an arm’s length and looked her directly into her eyes, ‘’after yesterday night do you still doubt me,’’ he chuckled when she looked away embarrassed and tried to move away from his arms.

‘’I am serious about you. I bought you the flowers and chocolate to come home and confess my feelings for you but my plans were sabotaged by Sheba. I want a serious relationship with you. We belong together and nothing is going to change that. Please agree to be my fiancée,’’ he wanted her to feel his sincerity.

‘’Come on Vuyanzi give me an answer,’’ he said now in a low seductive voice and leaned down to place a gentle kiss on her lips. Like all the other kiss they shared, this one grew in intensity and he wanted more. She was mellow and soft in his arms. Koni wanted to place her on the bed behind them and pick up from where they had left yesterday night but he remembered her uncle was waiting on the adjacent room for him. He slowed his kisses and pulled away. Vuyanzi whimpered and clung to him but he gently disentangled from her.

‘’Is that a yes?’’ his voice was gruff.

‘’Yes,’’ Vuyanzi whispered opening her cloudy eyes, coming back to the present.

‘’Good,’’ he tapped her nose and smiled at her
