Vuyanzi was pacing inside the bedroom it had turned to be a prison more than anything. She was waiting for Koni to come back home. She was going to face him and tell him of her decision. She was leaving. Vuyanzi had not seen her grandmother for about two days, she wondered where the old woman might be. Caro didn’t have an answer and only shrugged her slender shoulders whenever Vuyanzi asked.

Koni had allowed her to move around the house and Vuyanzi was impressed. A two storey bungalow with the best view in the reserve . It had four bedroom, three on the first floor and one on the ground floor where Ma. Anika resided. The ground floor also had a large sitting room, a dining room linked with the kitchen. Koni’s house had a library that was constantly locked. Outside there was a large garage that housed four cars. The garage was connected with a gym that had equipment that Vuyanzi had only seen in the magazines and newspapers. She had come to a conclusion Koni was a wealthy man. Very wealthy. Vuyanzi didn’t know what to think about that. She had never interacted with a wealthy man before.

A knock sounded on the door Vuyanzi ran from the balcony expecting to see Koni but instead Ma. Anika entered carrying a large suitcase

. Vuyanzi approached to help seeing that the old woman was huffing and puffing dragging the luggage behind her.

‘’What do you have their Ma. Anika?’’ they placed the suitcase in the middle of the room

‘’Oh it’s nothing Vuyanzi, just a small gift for you from Mr. Jasiri,’’ Ma. Anika said patting the large bag. She was smiling with a mischievous glint in her eyes. Vuyanzi wondered what that was all about.

‘’Gift, for me?’’ Vuyanzi asked taking a step back. Why would Koni bother buying her gifts, a whole suitcase of them?  The previous day Koni had come home with a new smart phone. The latest in the market that Vuyanzi would not even dream of ever buying. It was shiny as it was expensive. She was yet to confront Koni about it because the man had completely disappeared. Where was he?

‘’Yes for you Vuyanzi. Why don’t you open and see what he has bought for you, hmm?’’ Ma. Anika drew Vuyanzi closer to the bag. ‘’Come closer,’’

‘’I don’t think I should not be accepting gifts from Koni, I will be forever grateful for his generosity but…,’’

‘’But what Vuyanzi? Saying no to gifts is considered rude in some cultures,’’ Ma. Anika countered and Vuyanzi wondered where the old woman was getting the guts to talk to her like that. Ma. Anika had always been silent going about her business in the house. She rarely talked to Vuyanzi apart from telling communicating Koni’s instructions when he was not around. Vuyanzi wondered where the cheeky woman had been hiding all that time long.

‘’Ma. I don’t think that is a good idea,’’ Vuyanzi was still not convinced.

‘’Okay, I won’t force you, but won’t you even look inside?’’ she raised her eyebrow expectantly at Vuyanzi.

‘’Ummm….,’’ a loud noise coming from the front door stopped Vuyanzi mid-sentence. Ma. Anika pushed Vuyanzi behind her in a force she never guessed the old woman had. Her facial expression turned serious and alert. The cheeky woman Vuyanzi had seen had suddenly disappeared.

‘’Ma. Anika,’’ a large voice boomed inside the house and immediately the old woman was at the bedroom door ‘’stay here Vuyanzi, don’t come out,’’

Vuyanzi didn’t listen, she followed the old woman outside the room. They descended the stairs and crossed the living room only to come across four hulking bodies of Koni brothers. She doubted if they were real brothers because they were all as different as day and night, apart from the muscular body structures. She had seen them come and go from the balcony but they hardly talked. They waved and smiled at her but rarely stopped to chat. Koni always led them to the library and the shut the door behind them. There was something about them that kept Vuyanzi at edge. There was an air of danger that surrounded them whenever they came around. They were all about Koni’s age but they didn’t have the same air of power that Koni oozed without much effort. One look from his smoldering eyes and Vuyanzi lost her wits.

Speaking of Koni he was being held up by two of the brothers, his head lying limply on his chest. His shirt was off and an ugly gush was sipping blood from his stomach. His brothers didn’t look much different. His mesmerizing chest was smeared with blood and his dreadlocks were all over his shoulders. His jeans seemed torn and frayed, revealing his muscular thighs, his feet were bare. Vuyanzi’s heart missed a beat when she looked at him, what happened?

Vuyanzi was instantly at his side ‘’Koni what happened?’’ she asked in a panicked voice touching his cheek, looking up to him, even in this state he managed to be taller than her, his temperature was very high. Koni rubbed his cheek on her hand but he didn’t open his eyes. He sighed deeply and sagged more on the people holding him up.

‘’He has to lie down, Vuyanzi,’’ Manute said silently, while the other only looked at her with hidden expressions. She wondered what they thought about her cohabiting with a man, but that didn’t matter now. All she worried about was Koni.

‘’No he needs a doctor, we have to take him to the hospital,’’ Vuyanzi argued, Koni had clearly lost a lot of blood and if he didn’t see a doctor it might prove fatal. She didn’t want to lose him, she couldn’t lose him. Not now when they had found each other.

‘’The doctor is on his way, for now Koni has toile down Vuyanzi,’’ Manute insisted his voice coming out urgently than before. He was clearly agitated and Vuyanzi was standing on his way.

They didn’t wait for her to reply, they quickly whisked Koni away, Vuyanzi hot on their trail. They took him up the stairs and into the master bedroom, the room she had been occupying since her attack by the hyenas.

‘’Ma. Anika bring us some warm water,’’ Manute asked and the lady jumped into action.

‘’Okay,’’

They placed Koni and the bed and he didn’t even stir. He was as silent as the night and that worried Vuyanzi, what happened?

‘’Koni, wake up look at me,’’ Vuyanzi tried to wake him up but nothing happened. She sat beside the bed and held his hand in both of hers. His temperature was still high but this time his hand clasped hers tightly, their fingers interlocked and Vuyanzi let out a sign of relief at that. Her heart went back to the normal heart beat. She ran her other hand through his long dreadlock and to her amazement the lock seemed to have grown in length. They were always shoulder length and thick but right now the locks were locker probably reaching his mid waist and much thicker. What?

‘’Here is the water, Vuyanzi move let me clean him,’’ Ma Anika was back in the rom but Vuyanzi brushed her off, she was the one going to take care of Koni and no one else.

‘’I will do it,’’ Vuyanzi said without turning her back to the room. She was keenly aware of the presence Koni brothers behind her their eyes questioning but right now she didn’t care. All she wanted was the man before her to wake up. To talk to her even if it was bickering. Anything. Vuyanzi realized tears were gathering in her eyes. She sniffed and tried to force them back but it was proving impossible. He looked so peaceful sleeping there, some of the edginess from his face had disappeared.

‘’Okay, here take this, don’t worry Vuyanzi Mr. Jasiri is strong he will be fine,’’ Ma. Anika placed a clean towel and a basin of warm water on the bedside table. She patted Vuyanzi softly on the back. Vuyanzi gently removed her hand from Koni’s and folded the sleeves of her dress, ready to work. Miraculously the wound had stopped sipping and the blood was drying up. Vuyanzi wondered if her eyesight was playing tricks to her, clearly downstairs Koni’s wound was gushing blood but right now not more than five minutes away, the wound had somehow stopped bleeding. Was that normal?

‘’I think it’s better we leave them alone boys come with me,’’ Vuyanzi headed Ma. Anika telling the rest of Koni’s gang. He silently ushered them out and Vuyanzi was left with Koni alone in the bedroom.

She wiped her eyes and decided to focus on attending to Koni. She wiped the blood from his brow first before turning to his heaving chest. She turned lower and to her surprise, Koni had been stripped and he was lying naked under the silk sheets. Vuyanzi face flowed with warmth when she accidentally saw ‘it’. She springed up from the bed as if touched by a hot iron and stood there trembling like a leaf. Why would they strip him completely? Why was her body feeling warm all over sudden? Was it normally this ‘thick and long’?

Vuyanzi slapped herself to clear her head, Koni was clearly out of sorts. He wouldn’t know of her thoughts…would he? What was she thinking, all she had to do was make sure he was clean enough so that the doctor might have an easy time to check on him when he came in.

She tried to stop her fingers from shaking and properly covered Koni’s genitalia. It must have been a surprise. She had never seen a man’s thing before apart from books and charts from school. That’s it, it was the reason she was trembling nothing else. Vuyanzi tried to calm herself enough to continue with what she was doing. With abated breath, she managed to clean the rest of his body without much incident. The bleeding had stopped and only an angry red mark had been left on his unblemished chest. All this time, Koni didn’t even stir. His breaths were even and deep.

She cleaned the bedside and took the towel and basin inside the bathroom. She also cleaned up and returned to his bedside only to find Manute bent over him,

‘’What happened out there?’’ she asked him folding her arms under her chest. He better started talking.

‘’I think its better if he told you that himself Vuyanzi,’’ Manute said after a deep sigh. ‘’Thank you for taking care of him,’’

‘’it’s the little I could do after he took care of me for the past two weeks,’’

‘’He will appreatiate it,’’ he said before adding, ‘’Vuyanzi you should know that Koni values you so much,’’ before Vuyanzi could reply he was out of the door.

Vuyanzi decided against not following him and asking what he meant with the cryptic words. She decided to settle on the settee inside the room for the night.

. She would watch over Koni tonight. She approached him and wiped his now cool brow. She turned the bedside lamp light low and tucked the blankets beside him. As she was turning to go back to the settee to settle in for the night, Koni’s hand grabbed her wrist.

‘’Cold, it’s so cold,’’ he whispered, his eyes closed. He is dreaming, Vuyanzi thought.

‘’It’s okay,’’ Vuyanzi tried to console him while bundling the covers on top of him, he suddenly gripped her waist and hauled her under him on the bed. She could feel the complete outline of his hard body. She felt everything and her inside mellowed, heat pooled down on her stomach. Vuyanzi let out a whelp of surprise. She looked at him and saw an expression in Koni’s eyes she was yet to see. His eyes were burning orange but behind that expression Vuyanzi could feel something else, heavy and hanging in the air between them. Vuyanzi realized she was looking at another side of Koni, a side that sent a thrill down her spine.
