‘’She’s here,’’ Ma. Anika jumped at the sound of a car hoot at the gate. She hurried to open the door and walk out of the house to welcome Koni and Vuyanzi. She looked at Lishevi and Neza who were seated on the largest sofa in the siting room. Neza was composed, the only sign of apprehension was the wringing of her hands. Lishevi on the other hand was a mess . Her skin was ashen, she sick. She had just finished a bout of vomiting on the bathroom a few minutes ago. She was seriously sick. Ma. Anika had insisted that she lay down but Lishevi stubbornly refused, she needed to see her granddaughter first.

Neza and Lishevi had arrived some time back after Koni had let them know that he was bringing Vuyanzi to his house. They were to meet there.

The gateman opened the tall iron wrought gate and Koni drove into the garage and parked his car. He helped Vuyanzi out and together hand in hand, they walked to the door. Neza looked at them and sighed. Vuyanzi was clearly taken by Koni and he was entranced by Vuyanzi. Love. It was clear between them. Neza was happy that Vuyanzi was able to find some happiness in all this. Koni was good for her. Neza wondered if Vuyanzi would accept her as her aunt in her life. She didn’t seem so keen in accepting her as family but as time went by Neza hoped that Vuyanzi’s heart would open up for her.

The door opened and Vuyanzi smiling face turned into a scowl when she saw her grandmother and Neza

. Vuyanzi could not bring herself to call Neza her aunt. She turned on her heels to walk out but Koni stopped her.

‘’You need to talk to them,’’ his tone was gentle but his words were firm. He nudged her towards her family, ‘’I will be in my study if you need me,’’ he squeezed her hand and left after nodding at Neza and Lishevi. Vuyanzi didn’t want to let him go but she knew she was avoiding the inevitable. She was bound to confront her grandmother now or some other time. She decided it was better now. Koni had said that they would be flying out that evening to Nairobi. He had an early morning meeting in the city. Vuyanzi had agreed to go out with him. Her face grew warm just thinking of how she had agreed to his demand. She couldn’t believe that Koni’s aggressiveness turned her on. Since when did she start responding to demands?

‘’Nyanya, come sit by me,’’ Lishevi called out from where she was sitting, she appeared frail and tired. Her voice came out in labored breaths, Vuyanzi found herself walking towards her shosho. She had missed her. For a long time it had always been them against the whole world. Now everything was changing. She had an aunt, possibly a large family. She didn’t know what to think about that.

‘’Am not young as I was Vuyanzi but I can still chase you down,’’ Lishevi’s smart words were cut short by a bout of coughing. Vuyanzi hurried to her grandmother. Neza asked for Ma. Anika to bring a glass of water.

‘’Are you okay shosho? You are sweating a lot,’’ Vuyanzi wiped her grandmother’s brows and helped her lean on the back of the large sofa that appeared to swallow her. Was shosho losing weight?

‘’Shosho are you sick?’’ Vuyanzi was concerned for her grandmother.

‘’Am fine, just a bit cold.’’ Lishevi dismissed Vuyanzi’s concern superficially, she took Vuyanzi hand, ‘’Nyanya please forgive me, I was wrong,’’ Vuyanzi could tell her grandmother was sincere.

Vuyanzi could also tell her grandmother was not fine, she was sick. The persistent cough and vomiting. Something was up. They would deal with the whole mess of keeping secrets later.

‘’Shosho be honest with me, are you sick?’’

‘’No…don’t …’’ cough and more cough. The handkerchief Lishevi was using had stains of blood on it. Vuyanzi watched in horror as her grandmother coughed blood and more blood. She patted her shosho’s back and watched helplessly as her grandmother wheezed.

‘’Here drink this,’’ Neza offered her water. Lishevi took a sip before leaning heavily on Vuyanzi.

‘’Am fine,’’ her breathing was heavy. Vuyanzi helped her grandmother lie back on the sofa. Lishevi was too weak to protest but she didn’t let go of Vuyanzi’s hand. ‘’Nyanya…’’

‘’Am here, I am not going anywhere,’’ Vuyanzi assured her grandmother. She wrapped her grandmother palm on her cheek and leaned into them praying fervently for God to spare her shosho’s life. Vuyanzi knew that her grandmother’s life was in jeopardy. She didn’t need a medical diagnostic to know that. It was not normal for people to puke blood. A lot of blood judging by the bloodied handkerchief her grandmother had used. It was tossed to the floor.

‘’Mr. Jasiri has called for the doctor,’’ Ma. Anika informed them. Neza pulled Ma. Anika aside and they spoke in silent tones. Vuyanzi sat down beside the sofa on the soft carpeted floor and looked over her shosho who had closed her eyes and her breathing had slowed down.

Vuyanzi didn’t know how long she stayed at that position. Her grandmother was sleeping now, her soft snores assuring. Vuyanzi blamed herself for all of this. If she had not run away from her grandmother, she would not be this sick. Her grandmother was straining because of her. Her ever strong grandmother was lying down sick.

‘’Vuyanzi, the doctor is here, come on,’’ Neza gentle voice cut short her thoughts. Neza tried to help Vuyanzi to stand but Vuyanzi brushed her off ‘’I can stand on my own,’’ Vuyanzi answered curtly. Neza swallowed back her disappointment.

The old man came in, he was the one who had been treating Vuyanzi all long when she was sick from the hyena attack.

‘’Vuyanzi, I can see you can now move around,’’ he joked fixing his spectacles on the bridge of his nose, Vuyanzi smiled back at him.

‘’Your shosho will be fine don’t worry, hmm,’’ he assured her before, kneeling beside her grandmother. Lishevi had released the grip on Vuyanzi’s hand and Vuyanzi gently pulled her hand away.

The doctor probed Vuyanzi with his telescope and listened to her breathing. Vuyanzi watched as the doctor furrowed his brows together in thought.

‘’Is everything okay doctor?’’

‘’Yes yes, but Lishevi will have to go to the hospital. It will be easy to monitor her from there.’’

‘’What is wrong with her doctor?’’

‘’Your grandmother is sick, her lungs are crashing.’’ Vuyanzi felt a cold sweat breaking on her back, ‘’she needs closer medical attention,’’ the doctor went on making Vuyanzi feel sick to the stomach. Her grandmother’s lungs were crashing she repeated to herself.

‘’What can I do to help?’’ she inquired. She had to do something.

‘’Her blood pressure has to come down and she needs a lot of bed rest,’’ the doctor looked at his patient before turning to Vuyanzi. Vuyanzi blamed herself more, she caused her grandmother’s lungs to collapse by straining her. What had she done? She had to correct this.

‘’The ambulance is on its way, we will take her to The Green Belt Hospital,’’ the doctor informed her and Vuyanzi tried to hide her shock, the Green Belt Hospital was a private hospital. It was expensive and Vuyanzi wasn’t sure they could afford it. Her uncle ensured that Vuyanzi and Lishevi were medically insured but Vuyanzi wasn’t sure that it would cover the expenses of the hospital. She wouldn’t think about that right now, what mattered was that her grandmother was sick and she needed medical attention. It didn’t matter, she would think of something later. Right now all that mattered was her grandmother getting well. She would make sure of it.

‘’I am coming with you, I will stay with her in the hospital,’’ she told the doctor

‘’No, you can’t,’’ Koni brusque voice startled her, she didn’t know he was still around. And what did he mean she couldn’t stay with her grandmother. She was not listening to him now.

‘’Koni, I know we made plans but I can’t leave my grandmother in this condition,’’ she tried to reason with him.

‘’We can’t have this conversation here, let’s go to the study room,’’ he took her hand and pulled her away from her grandmother. Vuyanzi wanted to fight him but stopped herself. They had audience, Ma. Anika, Neza and the doctor looked at them curiously.

Koni didn’t give her time he pulled her at the large study room and shut the door behind her,

‘’Koni…,’’ Vuyanzi started but Koni cut her words, he held by her shoulders. He stood close to her forcing Vuyanzi to look up to him. She tried to ignore the warmth that was coursing from his hands on her shoulder to the rest of her body. His masculine scent that was prone to making her witless assaulted her. She took a deep breath.

‘’Your grandmother will receive all the medical care she needs. You can’t stay here because you might be endangering your life,’’ Koni whispered the last sentence, his hands gently squeezed her shoulders, pulling her closer to him.

‘’No,’’ Vuyanzi pulled from his embrace. She wanted space between them to enable her to think. Koni released her after sighing deeply. He put his fisted hands deep in his pockets.

‘’I have to stay Koni, shosho needs me now,’’ she tried to reason with him.

‘’I know that but you staying with her puts her in danger too,’’ Koni didn’t move far away from her. His jaw was ticking and Vuyanzi was entranced by it. She yearned to reach out her hand and touch him, or better yet bite him there, a small nip then lick it. Stop it, she admonished herself. Where was her head at such a crucial time?

‘’What?’’ she cleared her throat. Koni’s eyes were swimming with the orange flame again. His passionate gaze told her that she was not the only one affected by the electricity between them.

‘’The amanani are after you, but they will not hesitate to remove your grandmother from the picture to get to you.’’ Koni told her the horrible truth. His gaze piercing her.

‘’But…’’

‘’It would be better if you come with me. My people will take care of your grandmother.

. We will be back after the weekend.’’ Vuyanzi knew instinctively that Koni would take care of her shosho but she just couldn’t pack and leave now.

‘’Koni…I…’’

‘’If something happened to you imagine what would happen to your grandmother. Think about it Vuyanzi. I can’t let you remain here alone. I could reschedule the meeting but it would be too late. We have to be in the city very early in the morning tomorrow.’’

Vuyanzi didn’t want to inconvenience Koni or anyone anymore. The two weeks she had stayed with him she knew he was a busy man.

‘’Okay. Thank you Koni for what you are doing for us, you are Godsend,’’ Vuyanzi honestly appreciated his efforts. He took care of her when she was sick and now he was taking care of her and her grandmother. She didn’t know many people who would do that.

‘’I would do anything for you,’’ he pulled her into his strong embrace. Vuyanzi wrapped her hands on his mid-section and burrowed her head to his strong chest.
