‘’What?’’ Vuyanzi was perplexed, she could not believe what she was hearing. Her whole life has been a lie.

‘’Nyanya, I…,’’ Lishevi didn’t finish her sentence and Vuyanzi was thankful, she didn’t know which other lies her grandmother was going to spew. For as long as she knew, the subject of her parents had been a taboo to talk about in the house . Lishevi didn’t want her to ask questions and she didn’t because it always made her grandmother sad and angry. The only memory she had of her parents was a measly old torn photo Tabu gave her when they were children. Tabu had found it hidden in her parents’ bedroom. Vuyanzi hid it so well that her grandmother never found out. The only picture, memory of the people who gave birth to her. She didn’t allow herself to think much about her deceased parents choosing to numb the pain and the tears. On her darkest days, she would take the torn photo from under her mattress and cry her heart out, would her life be different if they were still be alive?

And to top on that, her name wasn’t even real. Sentwali Zuri. Her mother’s name was Keza Zuri, she hadn’t even known that. A Rwandese

. Good Lord.

‘’You didn’t have the right to do that, you had no right,’’ her voice came out slowly, she stood up ready to bolt from the room. This was not what she expected when her shosho said that they had to talk. This was more than she would ever expect.

‘’Vuyanzi, please sit down,’’ Neza her aunt stood up with her, she reached for Vuyanzi’s hand but Vuyanzi jumped out of her reach like a rattled snake. Neza folded her hands on her stomach a dejected look on her face.

‘’don’t touch me,’’

‘’Vuyanzi, your grandmother did this to protect you,’’

‘’No, she didn’t. You on the other hand I want nothing to do with. I don’t know you and I don’t want ever to know you,’’ Vuyanzi shouted and tried to swallow the tears threatening to overpower her.

‘’Vuyanzi, you will not disrespect your elder like that. Don’t raise your voice in my house,’’ Lishevi stood up. She tried to intimidate Vuyanzi but her granddaughter was having none of it, it was not going to work this time around.

‘’No shosho, you were wrong to change my name. What else did you lie about?’’

‘’Everything I did was to protect you…’’

‘’You keep saying that you were protecting me but you don’t say from what,’’ Vuyanzi didn’t miss the way her shosho’s eyes flashed to Neza’s who looked away immediately. They were still hiding things from her.

Even now when her world was crumbling on her feet.

‘’Vuyanzi, I am sorry if it seems like are lying but you have to understand that this is deep than you may already know, you have…um…a special…heritage. This goes farther than twenty years ago.’’ Neza struggled with words. What special heritage was she talking about?

‘’Your parents accident was not purely an accident. They were targeted and the rest of the passengers on the bus were collateral damage,’’ Lishevi blurted out. Neza nodded in agreement.

‘’Yes dear, your mother was running from someone, she was running from her destiny. She met your father by chance and then they fell in love and had you. Your father was trying to protect both of you when he decided to travel back here from the city. What he didn’t know was that the person would not give up. Your parents were murdered Vuyanzi,’’ Neza finished.

‘’Murder?’’ Vuyanzi could only gape openly at Neza. ‘’But how…?’’ her parents were murdered.

‘’The bus was…,’’

‘’That enough Neza. Nyanya know this, I did it to prevent whoever was following your father to follow you here,’’ Lishevi grabbed Vuyanzi’s hands and forced her granddaughter to look her, ‘’I would never let anything happen to you,’’

Vuyanzi could feel her shosho’s sincerity and she wanted to desperately trying to believe but right now her mind couldn’t comprehend so much. She needed time to come in times with everything. She needed to get away.

‘’I have to go shosho,’’ she snatched her hands away. She made it for the door.

‘’Go where?’’ Lishevi asked. ‘’You just got home. I will prepare your favorite fish soup,’’

‘Sentwali…,’’ Neza started coming towards her but Vuyanzi stopped her

‘’My name is Vuyanzi Amani,’’ Vuyanzi hysterically, ‘’don’t call me that name again,’’ the tears she was preventing to fall now came cascading down her cheeks. With that she stormed out of the house. Tabu calling out her name.

‘’Vuyanzi wait, you can’t leave like that,’’

Vuyanzi could not answer through the tears, she kept walking ahead. Tabu stopped before her

‘’Stop Vuyanzi, you are upset and not thinking straight. How about we go sit somewhere and talk, hmm,’’ at the soft cajoling tone of her cousin, Vuyanzi broke down more.

Tabu pulled her into her arms for a hug, Vuyanzi hung to her cousin for life.

She cried for her murdered parents. How awful was it for them to run across the country to avoid whatever was following them? She couldn’t stop asking herself if things would have been different if the accident occurred. Vuyanzi loved her grandmother and she always will but she couldn’t help but feel a bit angry at her now. She should have told her, if only she mentioned something maybe all this would have turned out differently. Lishevi never gave her a chance to mourn her parents. Their graves were in the town cemetery but her grandmother didn’t allow her to go there. She didn’t dare try to disobey her shosho but now she wished to she had rebelled and gone against her grandmother.

‘’I am sorry Vuyanzi,’’ Tabu continued to whisper at her patting her back softly. Vuyanzi didn’t know how long she cried but her heaves subsided to sniffs. She pulled from Tabu’s arms and looked at her cousin with tears rimmed eyes.

‘’I have to go see them, I have to go and visit my parents grave,’’ Vuyanzi tried to express herself heaving.

‘’Ok I understand, but let me come with you,’’

‘’No, I have to do this myself,’’

‘’Okay but come straight home hmm,’’

Vuyanzi nodded absently and made her way blindly out of the compound.

……………..

‘’What have I done?’’ Lishevi placed her hands on top of her head, wailing. She had watched her granddaughter walk outside the gate. She wanted to stop her, force her to understand why she had to what do that night twenty years ago but Neza stopped her.

. Vuyanzi needed time alone.

‘’She will never forgive me, my nyanya will never forgive me, she will leave me and never come back,’’ Lishevi continued to lament. Neza had come to find out that Lishevi was a drama queen at times but it was all in good faith.

Grandmother and granddaughter really shared a strong bond.

She could not believe it when she saw her niece. Vuyanzi was beautiful, an inquisitive face with traces of innocence. She looked so much like twin sister.

‘’No from what you have told me, Vuyanzi is a strong girl, she won’t go anywhere,’’ Neza tried to console Lishevi, ‘’as for me I don’t think she would want to see me again and that breaks my heart,’’

Neza wanted to cry again. She hated to see how Vuyanzi was suffering.

She stepped outside for a minute and dialed a number.

‘’Follow Vuyanzi and report to me. Make sure nothing happens to my niece,’’ she said curtly on the phone before turning back to the house.

Vuyanzi was safe, for now.
