Vuyanzi was running from a hyena when a lion blocked her path roaring at her. She tried to run away but they caught up to her. The lion stopped in front her and planned to jump at her.

No…

‘’Wake up sweetheart you are dreaming,’’ a deep calming voice cut through her dream she shot up from bed her head hit someone else’s. A person with a head of stone, was Tabu sleeping on her bed? There was an extra bed inside the bedroom . Vuyanzi rubbed her abused head and fumbled around in the dark. Where was her torch when she needed it?

She reached for her drum table but came up empty but her shoulders hurt. Did she fall down again?

‘’Tabu?’’ a deep voice chuckled in the dark. Okay that was definitely not Tabu. Vuyanzi was panicking. Someone was in her room, possibly a man. What was a man doing in her room?

She scrambled to get off the bed but the bed seemed to have grown in size.

‘’Vuyanzi slow down. You are not cured yet,’’ the voice went on. The intruder knew of her name. With tangled sheets she fell from the bed and collapsed on a soft floor, a carpet. A lemon fruity scent assaulted her nose. Her room definitely didn’t have a carpet

. Fully panicking now she quickly rose up ignoring her pounding head. She tried to move but dizziness assaulted her, then she collided with a warm hard body. As she had been stringed by a bee Vuyanzi recoiled and increased her attempts to get out of wherever that was.

‘’Vuyanzi stop,’’ the man said and she was grabbed from behind and easily raised from the floor then deposited on the bed. The man holding her must be really strong for she couldn’t even twitch. When she felt his body, naked body press down on her on the bed. She let out a scream that was bound to wake up the dead. She struggled against him trying to hit his chest and back but her small fist didn’t do much damage to the warm and muscled back. Her chest was hard pressed on his and in the recess of Vuyanzi’s mind she couldn’t help but feel warmth pooling inside her stomach.

Suddenly the door was tossed open and lights floored the room. Vuyanzi turned towards the door at the face of another, tall muscled man. That made her release another horrified scream.

‘’Get out Manute,’’ the man a top of her growled and the man on the door left with an amused look on his face. There was nothing amusing about her situation. With renewed fight, she turned to her assaulter. Her eyes collided with the volatile ones of Mr. Koni Jasiri.

‘’Koni?’’ Vuyanzi whispered, her feeble fight instantly dying. She looked at him and felt at ease. She looked at his mysterious eyes, the orange flame burning brightly at her. Koni switched his eyes to her lips and Vuyanzi found herself licking hers in anticipation. Her hands that were fisted suddenly spread out on the expanse of his back pulling his weight down to her. Koni inhaled sharply and a deep growl escaped from his chest. Vuyanzi’s blood was fired by that sound. She loved his weight on her.

Koni lowered his head and nuzzled his nose on her right cheek calling her name reverently. He released his tight hold on her but didn’t let her go. His hands started roaming her body and Vuyanzi couldn’t help but move against him. His lips found hers and she sighed deeply, anticipating the kiss that would follow. Her first kiss, she registered. She kissed him back marching his urgency with one of her own. She moved her fingers towards his hair and pulled his dreadlocks from the ponytail that held them, gripping him tight. Koni grunted and pulled her hard against his heavy arousal.

‘’Amani I need you,’’ he whispered in her ears, his warm breath causing Vuyanzi’s breath to hitch. Her blood was singing in her veins when he started nipping on her neck, his teeth were sharp, Vuyanzi thought through the haze of passion that clouded her. Suddenly, a picture flushed in her memory, a hyena was gnawing her neck and that seemed to cool her blood. Her head started pounding and she was taken back to the night of horror when she was nearly mauled to death with wild animals.

Koni seemed to notice the change in mood and instantly his body was off her. Vuyanzi held her aching head and tried to stop the horrifying memory that disappeared as soon as it came. He stood beside the wide bed and put his fisted hands on the pockets of his slacks, his torso was n*ked and she swallowed hard. Her mouth had suddenly gone dry. Koni’s body didn’t have an ounce of fat only muscles. She could clearly see his six…no eight packs. She had seen bare chested men before, when boys were practicing football, they tended to do that shirtless on the hot afternoons. Nothing would have prepared her for Koni’s magnificence. He had a tattoo of a cat’s paw on just below his left collar bone. She took her perusal higher and found his intense gaze on her, his eyes were no longer brown but the orange flame. His gaze fixed on her, he sniffed the air and started approaching her again, his intentions clear. He looked like a cat that had trapped her, a mouse, on a corner. She was going to be devoured. She wanted to be devoured by Koni.

That thought snapped her out of her dangerous thoughts.

Vuyanzi sat up sharply and tried to cover her body from his heated look. She was dressed in a very large t-shirt that stopped mid-thigh. Vuyanzi was suddenly embarrassed, she was in a man’s bed, and instinctively she wrapped herself on the bed cover, which had the distinctive scent of Koni. Koni’s bed. The thought didn’t last long as another stab went through her head. She clutched her head and bit down the pain. Hyenas with glowing eyes.

‘’Am sorry Amani, you are still sick…I shouldn’t have,’’ Koni said regret coating his voice, he was still trying to control his ragged breathing. He moved closer to her but Vuyanzi crawled into a ball at the head of the bed.

‘’Don’t come any closer Mr. Jasiri…,’’

‘’Amani you underwent a very traumatic event…,’’ Koni said with a frustrated sigh at the formality she spoke with.

‘’I am supposed to be dead, I was mauled by hyenas then by a lion. Why am I here? Oh God what happened to Juma? Tell me what happened to Juma, is he okay?’’ Vuyanzi jumped from the bed clutching to Koni’s hand. Koni brushed her fingers off.

‘’Your boyfriend is fine. He is recovering in the hospital,’’ He spat vehemently and Vuyanzi wondered what had set him off. His face was hard and the heat was gone replaced by anger. Why was he angry with her?

She let out a sigh she had no idea she was holding. She had to go see Juma.

‘’I have to see him,’’

‘’He nearly had you killed. Why would you want to see him?’’ Koni growled at her.

‘’He didn’t do anything wrong. I was the one who asked for his help.’’

‘’You should choose your lovers’ better.’’ Lovers’ what was he talking about? She didn’t have any lovers.

‘’He is not my lover,’’ Vuyanzi fired back. Why was he explaining this to Koni?

‘’His scent was all over you when I found you, how will you deny that?’’ Scent? This conversation was getting more stranger by the minute Vuyanzi thought.

How did they get kissing, to arguing? Maybe she hit her head on a rock when she was being dragged by the hyenas.

‘’I don’t know what you are talking about Koni, I have to go see him, Juma saved my life,’’

‘’He didn’t save your life, the lion did.’’ Koni said running his hands through his dreadlocks, ‘’the lions managed to chase the hyenas off,’’

Vuyanzi looked at Koni from the corner of her eyes, what was he talking about? The lion only wanted to eat her not to save her.

‘’Vuyanzi, Vuyanzi,’’ Caro banged on the door suddenly.

‘’Caro is here?’’

‘’She has hardly left your side for week, at least you don’t have that horrible taste in friends,’’ Koni said while walking to the door, he opened it to reveal a frantic Caro. Vuyanzi could only stare at his back with a dropped jaw. Seriously what was his problem?

After throwing her a scalding look, he walked out.

‘’Vuyanzi,’’ Vuyanzi did not have time to prepare for the tackle from her friend. It was a good thing the head of the bed was padded and it broke her fall. Caro ended up bawling on her arms and Vuyanzi could only awkwardly pet her best friend.

‘’It’s okay Caro,’’

‘’You almost died, I shouldn’t have let you out of that room that night. It was a good thing that Mr. Jasiri was able to reach you quickly,’’ Caro said between sobs from where she had buried her head on Vuyanzi’s shoulder.

‘’Mr. Jasiri is the one who found me?’’

‘’Yes, he practically carried you to the reserve hospital,’’

‘’Reserve hospital? Why not the normal hospital?’’

‘’You were attacked by a wild animal Vuyanzi, they had a specialist flown from Nairobi for you that morning. The reserve doctors managed to stop the blood flow and then you were treated from here,’’

That didn’t make sense but considering she was not dead then it must have worked.

‘’Your grandmother surprised me, she allowed you to stay here with Koni. Your uncle is furious, he insists you should be in the hospital not on the reserve. The biggest surprise is Mr. Jasiri,’’

‘’What did he do?’’

‘’He refused to let you out of his site. He stayed in this room more than me and your shosho combined,’’

‘’He did?’’ Vuyanzi’s eyebrows shot to her hairline. Why are you surprised? You were kissing him not so long ago? Vuyanzi shivered thinking about his surprisingly soft lips on hers.

‘’Are you cold? Maybe you should lie down,’’ Caro said pilling the sheets on top of Vuyanzi.

‘’No am fine Caro, tell me more, how is Juma?’’

‘’He is fine, he is still recovering. The newspapers are calling him a local hero, between him and Mr. Jasiri I don’t know who is more famous in the town,’’

‘’Newspapers?’’ Vuyanzi had no idea that the incident was such a big deal.

‘’Yes, we have reports in the town who want to question the local heroes who saved an orphan girl from being mauled by rabid wild animals, I tell you Vuyanzi they come up with the craziest headlines,’’ Caro rumbled on and Vuyanzi was relieved to see her best friend back to her old self.

‘Orphan girl’. Seriously.

‘’Juma keeps turning down the interviews and Koni growls anytime a journalist comes closer to him and they scramble like ants. That lives you but then again Mr. Jasiri has threatened to sue whoever steps his foot on his compound,’’ Vuyanzi would never give an interview.

‘’Is my grandmother okay? She was very sick the last time I saw her,’’ Vuyanzi asked suddenly concerned for her grandmother. She didn’t care much about meddling journalists.

‘’She is fine. She was here yesterday evening. She will come back at day break,’’

‘’Vuyanzi seriously, I have something to talk to you about,’’ Caro said, she jumped from the bed and walked to the door. She secured it tightly and came back to the bed.

‘’What is it Caro?’’

‘’You know I have been visiting you every day when you were unconscious and I have noticed something,’’ Vuyanzi raised her eyebrows at Caro.

‘’Well, Vuyanzi you have a secret admirer.’’

‘’Who?’’ Vuyanzi was intrigued.

‘’Koni Jasiri of course, the man has not left your side for a minute.’’ Vuyanzi rolled her eyes back but Caro didn’t stop there, ‘’seriously, he hardly let go off your hand. He even fed you and slept on that chair every night, I know this because I was here every day early in the morning,’’

‘’He was only concerned because he manages the reserve now, he didn’t want any bad publicity’’

‘’No, that man was more than concerned than the reserve. And have you seen the way he looks at you, good lord he looks like a man who is thirsty and you are like a cool glass of water,’’ ’Caro was just exaggerating, Vuyanzi thought then she remembered his heated embrace, now she was the one who wanted a cool glass of water.

‘’No he doesn’t,’’

‘’He went ahead and introduced himself as you mchumba (fiancée) to the doctor whom he personally brought from Nairobi. There is even a newspaper that has captured you together embracing on the night of launching the new reserve. By the way besty you look good in it, here’’ Now that was news to Vuyanzi. She had definitely not embraced Koni that night. Caro went ahead and whipped out her phone shoving it under Vuyanzi’s nose.

Fated lovers’. The story read and it went on to say how she and Koni were fated to meet and he was fated to save her from the dreadful wild beasts that attacked her that night.

Another headline went on ‘A love triangle?’ this was even more bizarre. It talked about how she was cheating between Koni and Juma whom they coined a rising football star and Koni the heir to Jasiri Tourism Company.

Vuyanzi opened another page with her face splashed on ‘an innocent orphan or a promiscuous dancer’. She had allegedly been sneaking to meet her boyfriend in the middle of the night.

Vuyanzi could not believe people could publish such lies and let other people read them.

‘’All this are lies, am not in a relationship with either of the two men nor am I promiscuous, who writes these things?’’ she flung her hands in the air.

‘’Pipe down unless you want your boyfriend to chase me out for making you uncomfortable. I have learned that he has some rabbit ears, he can hear through walls.’’ Caro murmured the last part. ‘’I shouldn’t be showing these to you,’’ she took her phone back from Vuyanzi.

‘’I want to get out of here,’’ Vuyanzi pouted, she had to get her life back together.

‘’Oh no you won’t, Mr. Jasiri won’t let you besides the doctor checks on you every morning and he will be here anytime.’’ Vuyanzi looked out the expansive window and saw the first rays of sun peeking through the clouds she didn’t realize it was so much early in the morning. She was distracted with everything happening.

‘’But my shosho…,’’ she started protesting.

‘’Your shosho will be here as soon as the day breaks,’’ Caro stopped her. ‘’Your uncle and Tabu are patiently waiting for your recovery,’’ Vuyanzi doubted that Tabu would be concerned with her health. Her attack must have devastated her uncle.

‘’It’s okay Vuyanzi, you don’t know how much your family was concerned after the attack. We were all concerned and wished you quick recovery. Don’t give us such a scare again.’’ Caro said embracing Vuyanzi for the second time that morning. Vuyanzi breathed in the spicy perfume of her friend and thanked God to be alive.

……….......

After more chatting Caro left and Vuyanzi crawled under the covers to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she kept reliving the night she nearly died and she jolted upright. Once she was awake, she relived Koni’s kiss and touch. She admitted she really enjoyed Koni’s attention and would like a repeat but after their heated argument and him insinuating that she had several lovers’ Vuyanzi decided she wanted nothing to do with him. She would plan her escape.

First rule for escaping is know your environment. Vuyanzi decided to explore. She threw the covers off her body and swing her legs on the floor testing her strength. With wobbly feet she stood up but sat down again. Vuyanzi was growing frustrated. How was she going to escape if her legs couldn’t work?

Suddenly the door opened and Vuyanzi turned to see her grandmother enter. Tears prickled her eyes, she had never known she missed and needed her grandmother until this moment.

Lishevi approached her granddaughter with tears shining in her eyes. Vuyanzi looked at her grandmother and noticed that normally jovial face was distorted with wrinkles that she had never noticed before. She seemed to have aged 10 years ahead of time.

’Nyanya I was so worried.’’ They embraced and Vuyanzi let out big fat tears. She clutched her grandmother so tightly.

‘’It’s okay, am here nothing is going to happen to you,’’ her grandmother’s soothing words seemed to cause more tears to fall from her eyes.

‘’I was so scared shosho, I thought I was going to die,’’ Vuyanzi hiccupped

‘’Don’t you ever say such things, nothing will happen to you,’’ Lishevi admonished shaking her head at Vuyanzi.

Read " Jabali's Redemption " by the same author ( Razia Iminza )

. ‘’Listen to me Vuyanzi, such an attack will never happen to you. You be sure of it,’’ Lishevi said with so much conviction rubbing Vuyanzi’s ever flowing tears.

Vuyanzi only nodded her head, ‘’I am sorry for making you so worried Shosho, I should have listened to you and stayed in the hostels,’’

‘’It’s okay nyanya, shhh stop crying. I can’t bear to see you in so much pain. Just focus on getting well and nothing else,’’

‘’I want to come home, I will recover from home,’’

‘’It’s much safer here nyanya, recover from here. There is a doctor from the city brought just here for you,’’

‘’We don’t have enough money to pay for such luxuries, shosho. It would be cheaper to recover from home and we would be together,’’

‘’No, you will stay here, everything is taken care of,’’ her grandmother said firmly.

‘’Shosho you realize that am staying at a man’s house, right,’’ Vuyanzi decided to use another tactic to get out of Koni’s home.

‘Mr. Jasiri has promised to be at his best behavior while you are here. I trust him,’’ Lishevi said while avoiding Vuyanzi’s eyes. Vuyanzi wondered what her grandmother knew. She seemed to be hiding something.

‘’But?’’

‘’No that’s final Vuyanzi, my decision is final. Until you recover you will stay here, it’s for the best,’’ the last part was said in whisper, as if Lishevi didn’t want her to hear.

‘’Now let’s get you to shower, your uncle is on his way here,’’ Lishevi said going back to her old self.

So Vuyanzi is alive phew thank God...will she be able to see Juma? and what about the lions?

Watch out for more.

Much love.
