Obiageli - Episode 12

 

Uche's POV

"Uchenna" Uche paused on his tracks, his father was calling him from inside his Obi, god..he thought he was still sleeping

"Uche...where are you?"he called again

" I'm here papa"he went inside the Obi, his father sat carving a wood into an arrow

"Where are you going to?"he asked

Uche opened his mouth then closed it..he pointed "I ..set some traps, I want to go check on them"

"By this time?"

"Eh papa..I..".

"Come take these tools to Okafor, he lent me last week"he took out a black bag from beside him and threw it at him

"Papa I'm not going that way perhaps Onyeka can.." he began

"You are now, when you finish you can go wherever you want" he said dismissively

"But papa, my traps I.."

"Whatever you caught has probably escaped by now....get going"

Uche took the bag up"Papa, what if Mazi is not around"

"Give to the wife or anyone, now get going and make sure you don't branch"

Uche rolled his eyes and walked out of the compound, he needed his own place, his father still thought he was a child, he just needed a wife to prove him otherwise. He strolled towards Mazi Okafor's compound, who was like a second father to him, he loved him a lot not only because he was wise but because he had a heart for everybody.

Obiageli was sweeping the compound when he got there, he reduced his footsteps as she looked at him then continued sweeping, he saw Nnenna who just returned from the stream

"Is Mazi around?"

"Yes, " she said "come inside"

Uche looked at Obi again who was totally ignoring him, why was she so rude, he went into Mazi's hut

" Mazi..goodmorning" he bowed

"Uchenna, you're growing so tall, you get taller anytime I see you" Uche laughed"how is your father?"

"He's doing well Mazi"

"And his leg..?"Okafor asked, his father had fallen into a hole at his farm and sprained his ankle

"Very good, getting his massage. .he asked me to give this to you"

"What is it arh..Ozor shouldn't have bothered himself, wish I could be of more help..anyway keep it at that corner" he said, Uche did as he was told, he should have sat with him but needed to get somewhere

"Mazi I have to be going now"

Okafor brushed his teeth with the chewing stick"okay, greet him when you get back eh, and tell him we have matters to discuss"he said, Uche nodded and stepped out of the hut..

Obiageli's POV

Birds were chirping so happily this morning she thought but why feel this sudden silence and wild thumping of her heart against her ribcage...Well he was going wasn't he, his legs as she could see them were moving towards the exit.. towards her. 

She kept sweeping and when she turned on the next lane she swept into his slippers which had stopped, she stood and looked at him as he looked at her

"I think you owe me a good morning"he said

She parted her lips "Well good morning, can I sweep now?"she bent again, but discovered he still hadn't moved, she stood up

"You can see I'm doing my chore, you should be  your way"

"Why you so rude"

"I'm not rude, your the one attacking me in my father's compound" she replied

"Your beauty is wasted with such an attitude, you think anyone is going to marry you with your bad attitude?"

Who did he think he was, her father? she tsked in laughter"Did i ask you to marry me Uche?"

"Yes...if I consider it"he said not missing a beat

She paused in her laugh, and discovered he wasn't smiling but was serious, her heartbeat increased as she pushed her broom in and continued her sweep

"You better leave before Ego finds you here"She said, he pulled her up to look at him

" What if she does uh.."his eyes washed over her face"I think you'd make a good wife" he left her and walked out of the compound leaving her rooted to the spot.

She continued her sweep smiling to herself

"Where is Uche?"her father came out to ask

Obi looked up surprised "He just left"

"What did he tell you..I heard you both talking"

Obi looked down at the floor, anywhere but at her father "eh..papa..we just talked"

"About?"

"Um..he was going to the farm" she said, why was her father asking her questions.. Okafor looked at her then shook his head, spitting out the debris from his mouth he went back in while she continued her sweep....actually he didn't know what he expected to hear..they were still children.
