Mothers' cry (1994 - 1998) - Episode 9
Cobin’s Estate was quite, most of the occupants were on their bed except those that were stranded inside Lagos traffic. Downpour that fell in the evening was blessing to most of them, they have been praying for it and it came. It made heat to disappear making way for breeze. Although electricity power provider has interrupted supply, some of them without power generating set open their windows, to allow for fresh ventilation. Sound of working power generating sets was a cacophony to their pleasure but they endured it to enjoy scared commodity they provided.
The road was empty because of the downpour which has forced many occupants to return home very early, tress on both sides of the road were dancing to sonorous sound of the breeze, birds were singing to add melody.
Funmi laid on a chair in her sitting room, she occupied one of the buildings in the Estate, a storey building of four flats . She stayed on the first floor, she was watching NTA news at nine, she was feeling sleepy, and she managed to stand up to turn off her power generating set. She noticed a strange movement through her window on the fence, she opened her curtail to have a clearer view of the person. A man has jumped inside the building, he brought out a cutter from his bag. He cut off padlock used to lock the gate from inside and opened the gate for others to come in.
They moved toward staircase, Funmi took another exist in her kitchen to the staircase at the back of the house, she ran into the generator’s house to hide.
One of the men opened her door, they checked both her bedroom and her sitting room.

. They ransacked both her kitchen and her bathroom. She didn’t remember to remove key from the exit door, one of them opened it, walked down through the staircase to her hideout, she was afraid. She was chocked with stench of used engine oil. The man failed to enter the house.
She heard their footsteps when they were leaving, she knocked at the door of her neighbor. She explained how she escaped an attempted assassination. She thought of reporting at nearest police station but was told to wait till next day before taking such action. She slept in one of her neighbour’s rooms, she was scared of them coming back to kill her.
Edward was stranded in traffic, he has a scheduled meeting in office by 8:00am, he intended to leave his house very early but his wife woke up very late, he wanted to his breakfast to office. He has started eating at home since his mother warned him to stop wasting food prepared by his wife.
He rushed to the conference room, Tayo was closing his remark he warned everybody to be security cautions, he narrated what his wife told him.
“Abacha has state hired assassins, they are trailing all opposition voices against his ambition”.
Edward was on his way to his office, the Receptionist called him to inform him that one Funmi called in the morning and she said it is very urgent. He was scared, she has never called very early in the morning. The rushed to his office to call her after collecting number Funmi gave the Receptionist. It rang twice before she picked it.
He was shocked when she narrated her experience last night, he remembered what Tayo told them at the meeting.
“Abacha has state hired assassins” he told her on phone.
He warned her to remain in her hotel, never to go home for few days because they might come back.
“Should I report at the nearest police station” she asked after he assured her that he will come in the night.
“They are all working together” Edward said.
