Lydia's heart - Episode 5

 

Ritsy and Nelly rushed down from the taxi and ran all the way inside the hospital. At the reception they met a hostile looking nurse who seemed to have a bad day, if they noticed they showed nothing of it as they try to catch their breathe.

“Hey madams come pay me my money nah” the angry taxi driver shouts and held Ritsy nearest to him

Nelly realized in their rush to enter the hospital they forgot to pay the taxi man. She smiled to hide the embarrassment and slid in crumbled 1000 naira to the taxi driver “keep the change” she muttered

The taxi driver smiled happily showing his dirty brown teeth from the long addiction to cigarette.

“Thank you madam, sorry for shouting like that, I been think say my money don vanish”

The girls just smiled back and turned to the nurse immediately the taxi driver left through the door.

“Please we are looking for Lydia” Nelly said expectantly to the nurse . “She was brought in this morning, a pregnant woman” Ritsy adds because of the cold stare from the nurse.

The Nurse frowned at them, chewing her bubble gum “Lydia who” she ask reluctantly going through the patients list

They scratched their hair and Nelly’s eyes brightened “Lydia Cindy” she says sharply and Ritsy looks at her.

The nurse browse through the records “why Lydia Cindy” Ritsy mutters quietly to Nelly, Nelly bent slightly “you know Lydia hates making her surname public, she said she hates bearing the name for a long time, so maybe Cindy might combine the two names”

“Oh but are you sure…..” her voice trailed off as the nurse asks them to sign the visitors roll

They sighed in relief and signed at the necessary places, the nurse points upstairs “Go upstairs, Lydia Cindy is at room no 26” they nod happily and rushed upstairs “and reduce the running, this is a hospital not a race field” the nurse shouts behind them.

In front of the room, the girls calmed themselves to reduce the anxiety cum curiosity to avoid shouting down the hospital.

They opened the door slightly and at one glance saw Lydia sleeping peacefully and Cindy pressing her phone. Cindy raised her face and saw her friends; she screamed happily and rushed over to them

. They hugged themselves happily “where is the baby” Ritsy asked unable to hold her curiosity any longer.

Cindy pointed at a corner with a pinky cradle; the girl’s rushed to it and saw the most beautiful baby they have ever seen.

“Awwwwnnn, it’s a girl” Nelly exclaimed and zipped open the pinky net covering the baby. She cuddled the baby to her bosom “welcome to our world” and gave the baby a light peck on her rosy cheek

The baby seems to understand what was said to her as she snuggle closer to her, “she is so beautiful, I want to carry her” Ritsy says and Nelly hands over the baby.

The exchange of hands made the baby give out a low cry and Ritsy chuckled “seems she doesn’t like me” the baby confirms her words and cried the more “maybe we will get acquainted another time” she says soothingly to the baby in her arms

Lydia opened her eyes on hearing her baby cry; they cluster around her smiling and hands the baby to her. She smiled weakly, brought out her abundantly blessed breast milk and thrust it to the baby’s mouth. The baby grabs the breast happily and begins to suckle.

“Congratulations love; you have made us proud” Nelly says and Ritsy nods in support

Lydia nods smiling showing how happy she is “thank you girls for supporting me through thick and thin, I really appreciate”

“and you are welcome” they said in unison

“my ear too, I have forgiven you” Cindy says patting her ear as Nelly and Ritsy examines the ear but laughs swiftly

Lydia grinned “thank you very much”

After a while “how was the presentation” Lydia asks almost same time with Cindy

“Oh it went well” Nelly replies

“and we got the contract, our hard work payed off, we will be handling the wedding decoration and everything associated with the wedding of the almighty presidents daughter. Both the wedding gown, the brides maid, in fact everything” Ritsy shrills happily

“wow, double celebration; congratulations to us” Cindy shouts

They laughed happily at their accomplishment, Cindy aid the sleeping baby on her bed and zipped up the net.

. Ritsy and Nelly kept the little things they could gather before rushing out on the side stool there.

Nelly brought out two small food flasks, hands one to Lydia and other to Cindy. “we rushed home to prepare something for you, I bet you will like it”

“and oh, my little baby Jane gave me this to give to you, it’s a congratulation gift. They were soo happy when I told them you have given birth, they already start counting how they will come carry the baby for you” they laughed at the last statement and Ritsy hands a small heart designed paper.

Lydia collected the paper and opened it “Congratulations aunty, I will come carry the baby” was written on it with her childish handwriting

Lydia smiled broadly “I am so happy, tell her that she is still my favorite baby” Lydia says happily admiring the effort the girl took in designing the little card

“I corrected the English” Ritsy chips  in.

“I know buh you did not design it” Lydia says in defence of her baby girl

Nelly cleared her throat and everybody looked at her “are you going to tell your mother about the baby”

Lydia’s eyes dropped and she closed the food flask of steaming hot yam she was eating from, “not yet; I don’t know how she will react to it, she did not take the news well when I told her about the pregnancy”

The room fell silent, “don’t worry, I bet she wouldn’t stay angry long enough if she sets her eyes on your little angel” Cindy says and consoles Lydia

“That’s true; nobody stays angry for long at their grand child” Ritsy adds and nudged Lydia to finish her food

The door creaked open and a pretty young nurse walked in, the girl’s stared at her as she comes close to them. She smiled at them showing her small gap teeth and they smiled back “please I need to talk with the person that brought in the young mother”

Cindy indicates “okay, the doctor wants to meet you, you have documents to sign”. Cindy stood up, excused herself and left with the young nurse.

The nurse points at the door and the lady gave a slight knocks on the door before entering. The doctor acknowledged the knock and she walked in.

“Doctor Chris, how is it going” the lady asks and sat down

“I left no evidence that she gave birth to twins but your pay will increase to half a million cus I have to settle the nurses” Dr. Chris replied relaxing on his chair

The lady grinned at the raise in pay but she has no time to argue further, “I will send the cheque over to you later in the day”

  Dr. Chris smiled and they exchanged handshake, “its nice doing business with you” he hesitate “but what do you plan to do with the other baby”

The lady muffled a smile “don’t worry, I will take care of it; just do well in keeping your mouth shut. I paid you enough”

Dr. Chris shrugged, blinded with the amount of money offered, decided to let the sleeping dog lye”

“I will send an address where you will send the child later; are we clear”

Chris nods and the lady left the office. Outside she adjusts her skirt, plaster a smile on her face and puts on her sunshade

“Lydia; the game just began”
