Love ~ Hate Relationship - Episode 2

 

Stellan.

Escaping wasn't the problem, trying to explain to my stupid friend the reason why I have escaped is a mighty dilemma on its on.

It's been a week since those people invaded my house and I've made it a mission to wake up early to go to town and come back very late.

My mother hasn't tried to hold me back because she knows that I do what I want, my father.. Who I haven't seen for a while now must be in hiding because he knows we will clash if we cross paths.

The guests have been relatively silent, I've not gotten a glimpse of any of them, though I've heard around town that they've been around, A man with his wife and two daughters are not hard to miss.

If things go well I might not have to see them for all of the 3 months, come new year they will be gone.

Now, back to my friend.

"Are you saying you won't do a baby cot for me for free? I've been harboring you for a week now, you go to work in town and come here to hide out, you had a house the last time I checked, literally" He says and I sigh, turning to him from the half made baby cot.

"I think it's clear I'm almost done with your baby cot, I'm not hiding out, I'm just not in the mood to go home yet" I say, turning back to saw some more wood.

"Really? Is that what you call tensing when ever you hear a truck drive into my compound in fear that its your mother? Not in the mood?" 

I'm not tensing in fear but rather guilt, I don't tell him this, I just give him the middle finger and go back to my work. 

He sighs and I ask him the question upper most on my mind, looking at his tattered face and sunken eyes, he looks like a crack addict with no money for the next fix. 

"What's up with you?" I ask, dropping my saw and tape. 

"What?" 

"You look like you are about to drop dead" 

"I'm just tired" He says, avoiding my eyes. 

"What is it Carter?" I ask, crossing my arms, knowing he won't be able to help himself but to tell me what is wrong. 

"Fine, Janice is thinking about putting the baby up for adoption" He says and I freeze, Janice is Carter's girlfriend who he knocked up. 

"What? I thought you guys have talked about it and you decided to get married when the baby comes?" I ask. 

"Well, that's what we agreed but she's been getting pressure from her parents and well, Scott has been on her trail for a while now" He says, sighing and pulling on his hair. 

I don't tell him that i think this is a good thing, seeing that once, a while ago I had seen Janice and Scott going at it in the woods behind his house. 

"So she's going to leave for you for the mayor's son, is that it?" 

"Guess so" He mumbles, I finally ask him the question that's been on my mind for almost nine months now. 

"How are you sure the baby is yours?" I ask quietly. 

He stiffens. 

"I was her first man"

"Does it matter? She could have been seeing other guys behind your back, have you thought about that?" 

"She couldn't have. . See, you know this things, when you sleep with your girl you kind of know when she's been with someone else" He says, I nod unconvinced. 

"What do your parents think?" 

"My parents believe I'm the lowest of scum for not keeping it in my pants in the first place, or better still used a condom" He says, suddenly finding the cot interesting because his eyes glues there. 

"What are you going to do?" 

"I have no idea" He says. 

"Can I give you a piece of advice?" I ask. 

"You know you can brother" 

"Do a DNA test, when the baby comes, which isn't far off, do a DNA test, have proof that the baby is yours" I say and he holds my eyes. 

"She almost ran mad when my mother mentioned it man, how do I do that shit to her?" 

"Doesn't matter, she doesn't have to know, get your closure, okay? Best thing to do now is that and you can take it from there" I say and he nods reluctantly. 

"Are we done talking about our feelings now? I have to grow my balls back, I think they fell off while we were gossiping" He says and I throw a piece of wood at him. 

"Shut up"

"Shit" I curse when I see the dead rabbit in my trap, I knew it was a mistake to have abandoned my traps and cages  for this long, it's been 4 days already. 

Now I've got a soiled trap on my hands. 

I bend down to dig a little earth to bury the carcass before palming the trap and going around the bush checking for others. 

I came here directly from Carter's house and I'm glad I did, seeing as there's fresh meat in one of the cages. 

I grin, bending down to grin at the hare inside the cage, already envisioning how much it's going to be worth in the market.

. I still, listening, It comes again and I take off in it's direction.,my traps and cages forgotten. 

Although there are no wild animals in this part of the wood that is this close to the house, they sometimes stray towards the light coming from the house. 

And maybe an unlucky someone has been caught with it. 

I skid to a stop, my eyes adjusting to the dim light to see a girl who shouldn't be older than five or six crouching beneath a tree, a cat by her side and her back towards it, I look towards the direction where the cat is hissing to see a garden snake. 

I breath in relief, walking towards the reptile who find it prudent to watch the trembling girl.

I bend and pick it up. 

"Here" I say to the girl and she gently lifts her head. "... It's okay" 

"Stop... It. Will hurt you" she says, the word hurt coming out as hush, I would have smiled at how cute she sounded if not for the terror in her voice. 

"It can't, there are some snakes that are not poisonous, like this one for instance" I say, flicking the reptile away, watching her eyes follow it, she grabs her cat into her arms. 

"What are you doing out in the woods by this time? It's dangerous" I say, bending to give her a hand, she accepts. 

"I was looking for Boo" She says and I guess the cat must be boo, poor thing. 

"Where's your family, we must take you to them" I say and she points towards the direction of the house,my house. 

"We stays there for now.. Daddy says.. It's vactioning" She says. 

"Vacationing" I correct, grabbing her hand to lead her out of the woods, well, guessing my stint as the invisible man is over. 

"Thank you for saving Boo and me" She says, wrapping her hands in mine, I smile down at her. 

I heave her into my arms, cat and all towards the house, entering through the kitchen walking into the sitting room and stopping when i see my mum and dad gathered around the table with a man and a woman.

. We. Must find her... If she's kidnapped..." The woman is saying, tears in her words. 

"Mami!!" Squeals the little girl and all attention comes to us. 

I let her down and she throws herself at the woman the cat hisses as it lands on a chair. 

"Alicia.. Oh God" The woman cries catching her. 

"Where were you?" The woman asks. 

"Boo and me.. Adventure" She says, grinning,I find myself grinning too. 

"What did I tell you about leaving the house alone? It could have been dangerous" She says, no heat in her words. 

"Big snake.. I was scared.. Big man came to save me" She says, pointing to me. 

"There was a snake?" My mum asks and I pull my eyes to her. 

"Garden snake" I say. 

"Who might this be?" A booming male voice asks and my eyes follow the sound to a man who looks larger than life, I immediately feel unworthy in his presence. 

"Oh, Mr. Knight, this is my son Stellan, Stellan say hello to Mr. Knight" My father says and I nod at him, stretching out my hand. 

"It's a pleasure to meet you sir" I say, he doesn't shake my hand but nods at me. 

"I'm Rose, Alicia's mother, thank you for saving her" She says and I nod. 

"It was nothing" 

"That quiet human is my daughter, Sybil" She says nodding at a girl who I didn't notice standing by the fire. 

My body immediately tenses up, why did I not notice her? She stands out too much to be inconspicuous. 

With her red hair and her curves and her.. I. Can't see her eyes but I want to know what color it is. 

"Hello" I mutter almost slapping myself, hello? Hello? I meet my soul mate and all I can say is hello. 

"It's a good thing you brought Alicia back, we would have arrested you if you had plans of kidnapping her" She says and my brows flies up. 

"Sybil!" Rose says before turning to me. 

"I'm sorry for her rudeness, she's extremely introverted" Rose says and my parents nods but my eyes are on her and she holds them. 

"Apologize Syb" Rose says as Alicia head whips back and forth. 

"Well, I'm going to bed" She says before marching up the stairs. 

"I'm sorry again" Rose says but I'm not listening, my eyes are on the empty stairs, wondering when I'm going to see the her again.
