I woke up that night with my mom's words in mind:"a person who doesn't honour the earth in which his ancestors are buried will be cursed for all eternity". I looked at the watch and it was two hours to dawn.

Read " Sister's Love " by the same author ( fatumah sulait )

. I had nothing left after my mother's death . I had known her all my life and although she was poor she used to comfort me and took away my fears.

I must be strong, I told my self as I walked to the store to pick my hoe and panga. As of now I have nothing left apart from hope. So, despite my sadness and being almost convinced at this moment that nothing will ever get better, I can not lose the one thing that keeps me alive:hope. That word so manipulated by the government,  who make promises they can't keep and thus inflict even more wounds on people's hearts . That word that so often rises with us in the morning, gets sorely wounded as the day progresses, dies at nightfall and is reborn with the new day.

Yes there's a saying you cannot argue with force but where there's life there hope. And I hang on that saying as I sloped down with my tools down into the banana plantation

.  It was still dark but the moon was shining brightly in the sky.

I had to work half time on my farm and half time to other people's farms in order to look after my two young siblings :Imarisha who is eleven years and mubiru who is only six years old. Our mom died two weeks back and passing near her grave brought tears in my head. I don't know who my dad is because it seemed my mom hated him so much that's why I was always afraid to ask her because I hated seeing her regret her past. My stepfather died while mubiru was only one year in a car accident in lwera.
