Daniel walked into the room, surprised to see the room light was on. Didn’t he put this off before he left the room? He thought, walking further inside….

He looked around the room for anything unusual, everything was still in its rightful place except the curtain by the left…

Alicia held her breath in the closet where she was hiding. She could see through the patterned designs on the door, and then past the transparent curtain that was blocking out the closet from view . Her heart was beating frantically as she saw Daniel looking towards her…or maybe the curtain. He couldn’t see her or could he?

Oh! Alicia, what the hell have you gotten yourself into?  She thought, praying this should be a nightmare instead of a reality. The hairs at the back of her neck stood at alert as he walked closer towards her, or perhaps the curtain. He stopped right in front of the curtain, or perhaps, right in front of her. She shut her eyes and prayed in her mind.

She opened them shortly to find him pulling the curtain apart and staring at the closet door, directly at her, or maybe it was just the door.

Her heart ceased, cold sweat floated down her back. He observed the door for a minute and then walked closer and brought his hand forward to the knob.

She knew it, she was done for!

All of a sudden, his phone rang, suddenly distracting him, and he let go of the handle

. He turned around and walked out of the room.

Alicia exhaled sharp breath as she saw him leave. Gently, she tiptoed out of the closet and then out of the room. She could hear him talking to someone via the phone in the living room. She walked gently to the kitchen and peeped.

“Doctor, please stop calling me. I said I am alright. I am no longer angry and I am fine. I do not need those stupid drugs again!”

He seemed very angry.

“I said, stop calling me!” he shouted, running a hand through his hair and walking to and fro.

“Okay, I will calm down, but I have to do something really important. I appreciate your concern but I am alright, I promise. Now, goodnight, doctor.”

He ended the call.

Who was that?

Alicia watched, his back was turned towards her. He was busy doing something on the phone so it gave her enough time to tiptoe towards the couch behind him and crouched low.

He turned around sharply as if perceiving a movement. Then he walked back to the kitchen.

Alicia took this chance and walked as quickly and as quietly back to her room.

It took her a while for her heart to stop beating as she rested her body on the bed. She badly wanted to sleep and let go of this stressful night. She was relieved and exhausted, internally and externally.

She checked her hand, relieved that at least, she hadn’t forgotten her phone there.  Checking the time, she realized it was already past 2 at midnight. Wow! The time she had spent in the closet seemed longer than that. She tucked the phone under her pillow.

While her breathing came to normal, the door opened and she immediately shut her eyes, pretending to be asleep.

She could hear him move from one place to another in the room. He seemed restless.

“Stopping is wrong, something is wrong.

He kept muttering to himself over and over, slamming his head with both hands.

Then he stopped. She didn’t know why but she felt he was looking at her.

What if he attempts to strangle her right there?

Quickly, she opened her eyes and turned, yawning with sleepy eyes. When she found him staring down at her, her heart skipped a beat but she had to go with the flow.

“Hey, love. You scared me, what are you doing still awake?”

He, first of all, looked at her emotionlessly but then smiled and climbed into bed with her, putting his hand around her.

“I had to use the toilet, love. Sorry, I scared you, now go back to sleep.”

“Okay.”

She went back to bed and closed her eyes but she would dare not sleep. She opened her eyes a little and saw him holding a phone, she knew whose phone it was, it was Fabian’s phone. 

 “Missed calls?” he said aloud and Alicia froze where she lay.  She had to be ready for whatever comes next.

She opened her eyes a little just in time for the battery to give another weak battery signal before it went off.

“Damn it!”

She heard him curse under his breath and then lay on his back. She couldn’t tell where he had put the phone, but she saw his other arm hanging by the side of the bed, moving as if he was throwing the phone under it.

Later, he inhaled and covered himself with a blanket before curling up to her.

Alicia knew she had been so stupid. Whatever happened to Fabian, her husband knew about it all and perhaps, even more. She was in deep shit.
