Happy Never After - Episode 13

“Lucas Harrison,” she said the name again and quickly, picked up her phone as she wrote down the number below it. This was confusing, why would Daniel lie about this person?

She flipped the pages of the magazine and saw more pictures of  Daniel, Lucas and some other students holding hands and laughing, behind them, very faint was another picture of someone, whose face was painted again. There were about five pictures with painted faces but in every page, the name, Daniel Johnson was mentioned several times as the brightest student and who was given a scholarship to study further in Florida…

“Hey baby!”

His voice startled her all of a sudden but she realized he was just on his way to the room. Quickly, she threw the magazine under the bed and straightened up just as he came in.

“So sorry I took so long, did you miss me?” he asked, coming over to kiss her.

“I was about to call 911 for you,” she replied as normally as she could and he laughed. He kissed her and she kissed him back. Hi back was turned towards the bed but she could see that part of the magazine was still outside, where he could see it.

“I am going to take my bath now and then, I am going to take you to paradise,” he whispered into her ear and she chuckled.  “But first, I need you to make me some tea, please.”

She nodded. “Of course,” she said, stylishly walking towards the side of the bed without bringing attention to what was on the floor.

He walked to the bathroom and she quickly bent down to push the magazine further inside.

“Babe, help me with my towel,” he said, sticking his head out of the bathroom and catching her by surprise as she was still bending down.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Urm, straightening my back,” she lied, standing up and picking up his towel on the hanger, then threw it at him.

“Thanks love, you are a darling,” he said with a wink before closing the door.

Alicia sighed and quickly picked up her phone to dial Lucas’ number.

She smiled as she looked at the picture of herself and Fabian together

. They looked really cute and happy together. She was trying to makeup for him while Faith took their picture. It was really a funny and a beautiful memory.

“Do I need to be worried about this guy?”

She was startled as she heard Daniel’s voice behind her. She quickly deleted the picture and turned to face him. “I was just getting rid of all our pictures,” she replied, faking a smile.

“Then why do I feel like you are sad to let him go, for me?” he asked. They were in his hotel room and it was a week after he arrived in Lagos, Nigeria.

She shrugged. “I think it is okay for me to feel guilty. I should have waited for you before starting something new with him.”

 “Your friend is not talking to you because you broke up with him, right?”

Alicia nodded. “She can be overprotective of me sometimes,” she replied.

Daniel smiled and drew her closer to him. “Would you like me to talk to him or to Faith?”

She was surprised. “Faith? No way and Fabian? Talk to him? Why?”

He shrugged. “I just hate the fact that you are battling with emotions. If I hadn’t had that accident that I had, our communication would never have been affected. When I left the hospital, I just had to come and find you.”

She smiled. “I know, this is not your fault.”

“But it is, I want to make things right. Let me talk to him, man to man.”

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I will talk to him, I have something of his that still  belongs to him which I need to return,” she said, bringing out the keys that Fabian had given her. “I will try to make things right. I was the one that messed it up to begin with.”

He sighed and kissed her softly on her cheek.

About twenty four hours later, she was standing in Fabian’s office, looking at him and not being able to talk. He looked really sad and hurt and she was overwhelmed with guilt and mixed feelings. She felt like running into his arms and apologizing but the only thing she could do was to bring out the key in her hand…

“So, this is the final goodbye?” Fabian asked.

. That was the first thing he asked her.

She inhaled and slowly dropped the keys on the table. When she looked up, she was surprised to see a tear roll down her eyes. That was not planned.

He walked closer to her, he was so close that her head was fuzzy with the scent of his cologne, she missed him terribly.  He placed a hand softly at the back of her neck, brushing her hair back softly.

“I understand how confused you are,” he said, holding her hand with the other hand.
“Fabian,” she started but couldn’t say anything anymore before he covered her lips with his. She grew weak in the legs and clung to him. She wished things could be easier, she loved him , she wanted him, she just wanted someone else too, she was confused…she missed him..

“He can never make you happy like I will,” he said to her, pulling away before picking up his key and walking to the door.

“Fabian, I lo…” she started but stopped as she saw what he was looking at, Daniel was standing at the door, looking at him, his hands in his pocket. Whatever she wanted to say died in her throat and she said nothing more as she walked out to meet Daniel.

“Sorry, you were taking so long and I wanted to see if all was okay,” Daniel said to her but was instead looking at Fabian coldly.

She frowned, she had no idea if he knew that she and Fabian had kissed but she said nothing. Instead, she walked out of the office while he followed…

PRESENT

While she stirred the tea in the kitchen, she dialed Lucas’ phone. It rang twice before someone picked it up.

“Hello,” said a lady.

“Hi, please, I am a friend of Lucas from Secondary school, I saw his number in our magazine, can I speak with him please?” she asked.

“I’m so sorry, my husband is in the hospital. He had an accident. What is your name please?”
