“This provision will last you for three weeks but after that, you are on your own”, Adewole said as the guards handed bags containing foods and drinks to Sewa, Duro, Monifa, Leke and Goke, “I won’t be able to help you either till we meet again. I only hope to hear reports of your accomplishments when the King rants about it in the palace”.

Goke smirked “We will be like thorns in his flesh”.

Adewole smiled at him and continued, “Although, if you have to pass across any information. I have spies waiting at Agbamo, Abule odo, Afonja and Owode . Go to any of these villages if you have to inform me about anything. My emissary will find you but if it’s absolutely necessary to see me. Then I will be waiting here in Oyo Ile, the capital. I trust you all know the secret code to the room at the end of the tunnel”, he said looking at Sewa.

The five companions nodded their heads in agreement. Adewole turned and gestured at a servant holding the reins of five horses in his hands. The servant bowed and passed the reins to each bandit. Sewa’s horse was pitch-black like coal and it neighed and rubbed its nose against her skin as Sewa caressed its mane.

“It seems you have a new admirer”, Duro teased as he climbed his brown horse.

“It’s not my fault I’m too cute”, she joked as she climbed his horse.

“That, you are”, Duro winked at her. Sewa rolled her eyes and patted her horse’s neck.

“Well then, we will be on our way”, Monifa announced as she tugged at her reins.

“I can tell these horses are of a good breed

. This is good. With these, we can stay ahead of the royal troops or catch up to them if need be”, Leke remarked.

“You don’t know how lucky you are to have a god sit on your back. Your name shall live for ages in the horse kingdom. We will strike fear in our enemies’ hearts”, Goke said to his horse, caressing his mane.

“Is he going to be okay?” Sewa asked concerned.

“He will be fine. That’s just how he is”, Duro laughed.

“There’s one more who must go with you”, Adewole said as he turned to face an old man striding from a distance. The five bandits studied at the old man approaching them. He was dressed with a simple wrapper tied around his waist. From the crown of his head to the sole of his feet, he was decorated with charms of all shapes and sizes. He carried a small bag on his waist that reeked of herbs and potions.

“Baba Ajala will be accompanying you on this task”, Adewole said.

The old man flashed a grin with his front teeth missing, “May the gods be with you, noble warriors. I bring blessings, protection and luck with me and as I join you, the protection of the gods will also be upon you”.

Sewa let out a sigh of frustration, “We don’t need a herbalist”, she said to Adewole and turned to Ajala “Forgive me baba but I fear you will just be holding us back. Perhaps, you will be safer in your sanctum brewing potions”.

The herbalist pointed at her, “Ah, I see your heart, young one. Your faith in the gods is like a small fire struggling to stay alit. Don’t let it die. You do not need to care for me, I have all the protection I need”, he said tapping the charms on his body.

“I only have faith in my sword and my bow. That has been my only protection and I’m still alive. I will like to see if the gods will come down and save you at the first sign of trouble”, Sewa shot back.

The herbalist only smiled at her and shook his head. He climbed his horse and nodded at Adewole “May the gods be with this fellowship”.

“Head over to Aleshinloye. That’s the first village”, Adewole proclaimed.

The company set out into the wild. The hooves of their horses thundering against the earth as they rode till set.

Under the starry night sky, Monifa sang a song as Duro smoked the dead rabbits over the campfire.

. The group sat among the fire, keeping themselves warm and listening to Monifa as their teeth tore at the rabbit meat.

Duro stole a glance at Sewa and smiled to himself, “She might not believe in the gods but one can’t just believe he had just met her by chance. It could only be the work of the gods. My faith in the gods might not be as strong as that of the medicine man but I don’t believe things just happen coincidentally. A few days ago, I would never believe she and I could ever cross paths again but when we needed a team to take down the mad king, she just popped up from nowhere. It definitely must be the work of the gods and that proves that they are on our side. Perhaps we will end up victorious and put an end to their insanity. What a remarkable woman though, even with that size, she’s not enough to take up on arms neither does she blink or retreat before a man”. He glanced at Monifa and snorted, “adept but too mannish. Look at the hairs on her legs. Shave, woman”. He glimpsed back at Sewa, “Can’t you see Sewa? Isn’t she a woman like you? So cute and lovely”.
