Later that night as the inhabitants of the villages slept peacefully. Sewa rolled to her side frustrated and unable to sleep. She heaved a sigh and glanced at her Monifa who shared the room with her. She left the house to enjoy some tranquillity in the breezy night.

Seated on the ground in front of the house was Duro with his legs crossed as he stared at the twinkling stars in the sky. Sewa shivered and wrapped her arms around her body as she moved to sit beside him.

Duro turned to glance at his new company, “Can’t sleep either?”

Sewa nodded silently, “I’m just feeling restless”.
“I understand . A week ago, you were travelling on your own wrecking vengeance on your enemies. They were nothing but simple mercenaries but now here you are, fighting a war against the crown that could save millions. That’s a lot of burden for someone to have on their shoulders”.
Sewa looked at him surprised, “Where’s the frisky Durojaiye I met a few days ago? Stop trying to be wise. It doesn’t suit you”, she joked.

Duro smiled “Maybe I’m just trying to impress you”.

Sewa’s cheeks flushed, her eyes locked with his, either of them unable to break their gaze.

Sewa’s chest pulsated as she watched Duro draw slowly and closer to her as his lips gradually parted. Her eyes widened when she realized what he was about to do

. She subtly faked series of coughs, suppressing the profound emotion between them. Duro abruptly drew back, staring nervously at his feet.
In an effort to dissolve the tension between them, Sewa blurted out “So how did you meet the others; Monifa, Goke and Leke”.

Duro chuckled lightly “I met Goke in an arena. There was a period I desperately needed money. I had just abandoned my gang. To be honest, we were caught in an ambush by a company of warriors. We were so notorious that we attracted the attention of the capital. The king himself dispatched a troop to put an end to our notoriety. Many of us were killed, I and one other managed to explain. We had to stay undercover since we were hunted down without rest. Weeks of hiding turned to months, when it was finally safe to show my face. I was penniless and famished. I couldn’t risk going back to stealing so I joined a fighting competition. At the end, I and Goke made it to the final round with me being the victor. To be honest, he would have won if he wasn’t too confident in his strength. He underestimated me and I made good use of that opportunity. After the match, he hunted me down and requested for a rematch.

. At first, I tried to ignore him but he was very persistent. With time, we became travelling companions and he turned everything into a competition. Who ate faster, who killed the most men, who had more admirers, which one of us could hold his liquor longer”, Duro laughed as he reminisced, “That was the beginning of our friendship and he introduced me to Leke. He and Leke are cousins. Monifa came along later on. Never in our wildest dreams would we have dreamt of ending up like this. A group of bandits saving the Kingdom from a mad king, it sounds like a fairytale”.

Sewa laughed heartedly “His bragging aside, Goke is not so bad. He’s like a baby in a giant’s body”. Duro laughed and nodded in agreement.
Sewa stood up and dusted her butt, “Thank you, I needed that. I feel relaxed now”.

Duro looked up at her, “You are not going to talk about yourself? I’m a good listener and I’m an expert at cuddling if you feel lonely. Tested and verified by hordes of women”.

Sewa replied amused, “Maybe one day if you’re lucky”.

“Then I will pray to the gods and offer the King’s head as sacrifice if necessary, to witness such a day”, Duro winked.

Sewa chortled and walked back to the house, leaving Duro as he stared dreamily at the stars.
