The S**tape - Episode 2

 

Tina was lying on her bed reading a novel when the door creaked open. She angrily turned to face the intruder knowing fully well that it couldn't be no other person than Debra, her only problem. It is funny how her little sister has grown to become a pest in her life at a time when she needed to be free with no extra baggages but instead everybody expects her to drag the little girl along with her to everywhere. From the salon to the spa, to the choir practice in church which she gets to attend during holidays and most annoyingly anytime she visits her friends, Debra gets to tag along.

  She stared angrily at Chris who stood at the door unsure if he should proceed or turn back because the look he is faced with could kill.

     “May I?” He asked . “Come in?” Gesturing with his hands.

     “You should have done that before barging into my room.” She leered at her twin. “Come in.” 

    “Thanks.” He said as he walked in looking around as he took note of some changes in the room.

      “Looking for something?” Tina asked.

      “Not exactly, just wondering what happened to all your Hannah Montana pictures and posters?” 

      “Nothing. I just wanted a new look for my room, something different.”

. Cos your room used to look like a photo gallery. Now it looks like a room.” He teased.

      “Why are you here? Not to check out my room that I'm sure of.” Tina asked. “Or let me ask which of my friends are you crushing on now?”

       “You wish. Your friends are a ugly bunch, so not a chance.” He fired back.

       “Ouch! That hurts.” Christina exclaimed holding her chest. “Are you saying I am ugly too, after all ugly begets ugly?”

        “I never called you beautiful or pretty.”

        “Now get out of my room stupid boy.” She feigned anger as she threw her pillow at him.

       “Not when my reason for coming here has not been achieved.” With this he jumped into her bed. “I came to talk about mum and dad.” That seemed like the scariest topic as silence engulfed the room.

        “What about them?” 

       “Don't pretend as if you don't know or haven't you noticed some sort of tension between them since we came back?” He asked.

        “Are you just noticing?” She queried.

        “I know you and mum are close and she must've told you. Since when have you known?” 

        “More than two years now.” She replied.

   Chris opened his eyes wide in shock. “Two years, and what have you done about it?” 

       “You and dad are close, are you saying he didn't tell you anything?” 

       “Nothing at all.” Chris replied wondering how his sister was able to keep something of such gravity to herself for such a long time. Women are wicked. He concluded.

        “Well, the problem started when dad took up the appointment as SSA. Or let me say when he joined politics.” 

        “That shouldn't be a problem in my own opinion. I thought mum always wanted him to progress and advance, she has always been there for him even when he was just a common street journalist. Why is she against his ambition?” 

       It is true that men lack foresight. Tina thought. 

     “Think about the integrity, credibility dad has built as a journalist. He rose to become the editor-in-chief.  Now imagine him dining with the same political class he has always attacked in his column. That leaves a lot to be questioned cos many people think he was bought over.” She explained.

  Chris stared at her sister with a lot going through his mind. “But it is something they can resolve or could have resolved.” 

      “Before now, yes.” 

      “What do you mean?” He asked.

      “I don't want to be negative but things have gone beyond repairs.” 

      “We should inform the pastor?” Chris suggested.

       “Which Pastor? Dad attends a different church to Mum or don't you know?” 

  Truly, things have gone bad beyond repairs. He thought. But not beyond redemption. He concluded.

Venue: The Governor's office

Robert walked into the Governor’s office with a bunch of newspapers.

     “Ah a, Robert my man.” The state governor, a man in his late fifties said as soon as he walked in.

     “Your excellency sir.” Robert bowed as he stepped unto the seal rug on the floor before the big oak desk.

     “How are you this morning?” The Governor asked.

     “Very fine sir, how about you sir?” He replied.

    “With the entire state on my neck, I cannot be fine.” The Governor replied with a chuckle. “How is the family?” 

     “They are doing fine sir.” Robert replied as he dropped the newspapers on a side of the table while he packed the previous days editions.

     “I hope you are ready for our trip?” 

     “Yes sir.” Robert replied.

     “So soon? For a trip you got notified of this morning?”

     “This is work and it is sometimes demanding. It sometimes rob one of their family time, but work must be done.”  He explained.

      “I'm quite sure your madam is not cool with it.” 

       “She has to accept that work has to be done first before anything else.” He replied.

 The Governor smiled. “I’m afraid you are wrong. At the end of your job or assignment, you will definitely return home and I'm sure you don't want to return to an empty one?”

      “Give it a thought and settle whatever differences it is that you have with your wife. My wife doesn't want me in politics, she allowed me run for a term and now bases on our agreement, I may not run for a second term.”

  That seemed to be a lot to take in for Robert who even though he is considered family with the first citizen of the state, he doesn't know everything about the man he speaks for.

     “Okay sir, I will do just that.” With this, he bowed before leaving the office with a resolve to settle things with his wife.
