Later Vuyanzi woke up with a start. It was very dark and she lying on her bed. Strange. She listened to signs of life but could hear nothing. Her small bedroom window was still open and the night breeze was billowing the curtains slowly. She tried to sit up but the pain in her throat was holding her back. That was when she remembered Kweyu and his death choke.

How did she get home?

She didn’t remember much after her passing out. She decided not to think much about that, she was hurting everywhere, her head, neck and legs . Despite the pain she quickly lit the torch on the table flashing the room with orange light. She hurried to close the window but not before seeing movement on the trees line that marked her grandmother’s fence. She quickly closed the window thinking that Kweyu had followed her home.

After securing the window, she slowly made her way out of her small room. She crossed the hallway, full of cackling chicken she made her way to her grandmother’s room.

‘’ Shosho, are you awake?’’ her voice came out as choked. She slowly opened the door and wobbled in, the radio was still on and the lamp was still burning on the table. Her grandmother was out splayed on the bed sleeping

. She was softly snoring. Vuyanzi smiled. If there was anything her grandmother could do was sleep like the dead.

Tears prickled her eyes just thinking that if Kweyu had his way she would never see her grandmother ever again. Her shosho was the one of the people who cared about her the most. Vuyanzi had other relatives in the village but her grandmother was the only person she count on.

. Both her parents were dead, they were travelling on a bus and the bus was hit by an over speeding trailer throwing the bus off the road into a ditch killing more than fifty passengers except her. She had survived without a scratch on her small body. She had been less than a year old. That was all she knew.

Vuyanzi covered her shosho, turned off the radio and put off the tin lamp. She slowly walked out of the bedroom softly closing the door behind her. She was planning to go straight to bed but her stomach grumbled demanding to be fed. She noted that she had not had food since that morning when she had left for school. She made her way to the kitchen to hunt for food. She rummaged through the cupboards and found boiled maize and tea on a thermos. She sat down to enjoy the meal. She polished her food and made it back to her room after securing all the door and windows in the house.

She was out the minute she hit her pillow, the last thoughts being of the lion’s roar.
