Vuyanzi fluttered her eye open. She was in her bedroom on her bed and it was still daytime. Caro looking at her beside her was Juma. Both were standing looking at her with worry on their eyes. She remembered how she had fainted, the sharp headache she had was gone. Suddenly she felt so energetic. What about the voice? She frantically looked around her.

Where was it?

‘’Amani are you okay?’’ it was Juma who asked first sitting on the opposite bed beside Caro.

‘’What are you searching for?’’ Caro asked too.

‘’I…,’’ Vuyanzi thought about it and decided against telling her friends about the voice she was kept hearing in the wind. They would think she had lost her mind.

‘’I just took a little nap . I think the sun was too much. I fell asleep. I am okay,’’ Vuyanzi answered quickly. She saw Caro and Juma sharing a look.

‘’Vuyanzi we found you lying in the under a shade in the garden, it was Juma who carried you inside. We have been trying to wake you up for almost an hour now. Tabu has gone to call your uncle because your grandmother is not picking her phone. We were so worried,’’ Caro said with unshed tears shining on her eyes.

‘’What?!’’ Vuyanzi was astonished.

As if on cue, Vuyanzi heard voices in front of the house

. Her uncle.

Her small room suddenly was full with people, her uncle came in with worried lines drawn on his forehead. Her uncle was the older brother to her father. He was a tall lanky man who always had a kind word for her. Apart from her grandmother, her uncle was the second person who cared for her. He took care of her and her grandmother. Her grandfather had been a polygamous man and had managed to marry four wives, her grandmother was the youngest wife and had given birth to two sons.

‘’Vuyanzi, toto (child) are you okay?’’ her uncle asked dotingly while feeling the temperature on her forehead. Tabu was immediately behind her father with an expressionless look on her face. She lined herself close to Juma and Vuyanzi felt her headache coming back again, Tabu was standing on her spot, she thought bitterly.

‘’…I will send you to the hospital to be checked. You will not go anywhere near the farm again. Tabu can help your grandmother on the farm for the time being.’’ Her uncle was saying. Tabu flapped her mouth but said nothing.

‘’Tabu you will accompany your cousin to the hospital,’’ Uncle Liyai addressed Tabu before turning to Vuyanzi, ‘’you still have your hospital card?’’ Vuyanzi nodded, ‘’then use it. I want your medical report today in the evening, tumeelewana (understood)?’’

‘’Yes uncle,’’ Vuyanzi wanted to argue but decided against it. She was feeling better but to assure her uncle she decided to visit the hospital.

‘’I have a motorbike, we can be there in twenty minutes. I will wait for you outside Vuyanzi,’’ Juma said.

‘’Okay,’’ Vuyanzi breathed, she was still trying to absorb that Juma was standing in her bedroom.

. Suddenly she felt embarrassed, she was dirty. If she had collapsed on the farm then that meant that her feet were dirty. She distinctly looked over her feet but they were clean, scrubbed clean, her hands too. Though she was still in the clothes she was working with. When did she clean up? The last thought she had was her world going black and then waking up with her friends beside her bed.

Was she losing her memories? Maybe she should really see a doctor. A week ago she fainted from being choked then mysteriously found herself in her bed, what really happened? The wound on her neck had been painful but after a day the wound had disappeared. Vuyanzi had heard cases of people having memory lapse, she never thought that it would happen to her. Didn’t such things happen to people who hit their head? Maybe Kweyu banged her head against a rock when he choked her, he was much more demented than she thought.

‘’Hey are you okay?’’ Caro’s anxious voice brought her back to the present.

‘’Where did you find me Caro?’’

‘’What?’’

‘’Where in the field did you me?’’

‘’Oh…we found you over there,’’ Caro pointed out her window to the fence. Vuyanzi’s heart nearly missed a beat. It was the same spot she had felt the presence of someone watching her. Then it hit her, she had collapsed in the farm, how did she get to the cluster of trees?

Swallowing down her dread she reassured her uncle that she will visit the hospital.

She had to visit the hospital and try to make sense of what was happening.
