‘’What are you carrying? The smelly fish your shosho sells in the market?’’ Kweyu asked coming closer to Vuyanzi, the hockey stick in his hand looking more like a weapon than a game equipment. Vuyanzi swallowed hard remembering the way he talked about swinging the said stick on her head.

‘’Its none of your business Kweyu,’’ Vuyanzi didn’t know where the bravado came from. She grasped the basket close to her . She willed the cub to remain silent and not make a sound.

‘’What are you doing in this neighborhood? This is not where the like of you machokora (street urchins) live.’’ Vuyanzi was taking steps back but Kweyu came coming closer invading her personal space.

Vuyanzi looked around and cursed the environment for being so quiet, nobody was around. It was middle day and it appeared the heat was keeping people inside their homes. Nobody would see him assaulting her.

‘’I don’t have time to argue with you, I have to go back to town,’’ Vuyanzi side stepped from and started to walk off but Kweyu stopped her by pulling her by cuff of her dress.

‘’You don’t know whom you are talking to do you Vuyanzi? You seem to have forgotten about our last encounter, should I remind you?’’ Kweyu said shoving her forward. Hard.

Vuyanzi lost her step and she went down falling on her feet on the pavement ground, still clutching the basket to her, her knees scraped and she boiled with anger

. She had had enough of Kweyu bullying, ignoring the pain on her knees she stood up and faced him.

‘’What is wrong with you?’’ she shouted at him, tired at being passive to his cruelty.

‘’Don’t you dare talk to me like that,’’ Kweyu said raising his hand to smack her and Vuyanzi closed her eyes prepared for the pain but it did not come.

She slowly opened her eyes to see Kweyu being tackled down by someone…Juma.

What was Juma doing here?

Juma came to her rescue.

‘’I warned you that I would finish you when you touch her again,’’ Juma huffed and landed a punch on Kweyu’s stomach. Kweyu grunted and socked Juma a punch on the nose.

‘’Get off me,’ he wheezed and managed to pin Juma down, he landed Juma a sold punch and Juma flipped him off with a kick. They both stood up and squared up again.

Vuyanzi had seen enough. She settled the basket down and stood between them trying to break them up.

‘’Stop it, both of you,’’ she shouted while avoiding Kweyu’s well-aimed punches. Both boys were sweating and blood trickled from their noses and mouths. God, what had she done?

‘’He started it,’’ Kweyu rasped and aimed a punch at her but Juma pushed her behind him narrowingly missing Kweyu’s bunched up knuckles but Juma didn’t miss it, it hit him squarely in the face.

‘’That’s it,’’ Juma grumbled and tackled Kweyu down on the ground. Again.

Kicks, blows and curses flowed, add to Vuyanzi’s screams for them to stop. Both boys seemed to have excessive energy and neither of them seemed to be slowing down. Fabric was shred and knuckles turned bloody.

The struggle attracted the attention of an old security guard from one of the gates around them who raced towards and broke them apart. Both boys were huffing and panting.

‘’Stop this vijana (young men), why are you fighting?’’ the guard asked while holding back Kweyu who was struggling to get out of the grasp of the guard.

Vuyanzi went to Juma and held his forearm.

. ‘’Stop this Juma, it’s enough,’’ Juma turned his eyes on her for a moment before looking at Kweyu. Watching his every move.

‘’Listen to your girlfriend Juma, stay away from me,’’ Kweyu chided while wiping blood from his mouth by his sleeve. Or what remained of it.

‘’Why don’t you stop me?’’ Juma reproached but Vuyanzi held him by both her hand and didn’t bulge. She ignored how the muscles bunched under her fingers.

She was touching Juma, flesh and blood, maybe her dreams were still valid, and Vuyanzi swooned in her mind.

Focus woman.

‘’It’s not worth it, let’s just go.’’ Vuyanzi did not want any more bloodshed. She had seen enough. Not to mention she had a small cub on her basket which she didn’t want Kweyu to see.

Juma removed her hands from his biceps and tucked it in his palm and turned to leave. Vuyanzi nearly passed out from the warmth that flooded her face. Her dreams were definitely coming true. She barely had time to pick up the basket before Juma strode away, tugging her along.

‘’Run away, like the little coward you are,’’ Kweyu didn’t know when to stop.

Juma tensed a little but he kept walking away dragging Vuyanzi behind him.

Vuyanzi’s day was getting better by the minute. She could not wait to tell Caro all about it
