Guma was on his medical hut when he sensed the presence of the beast.

It was in the middle of the night and all was quiet. His son was asleep, a perfect time for him to prepare his concoctions. He stopped in the middle of crashing leaves in the mortar and turned around. A breeze came and the fickle candle light that was burning was put out. The room was shroud in darkness apart from the moonlight that streamed in through the open door, now occupied by the giant of a man…or rather beast.

It was majestic, its size . It stood as taller than any man with a strapping body, a wide chest that filled his wide door tapping down to lean waist. Its arms were hairy and well built, its legs long and sturdy. Its feet were huge with its paws the size of a plate stretched out. Its sharp claws were retracted, but Guma to see that the beast was burning to release them. The most imposing part of the beast was its face, its head was covered with a wild black as night mane. The hair twisted into dreadlocks that were swept back by probably wind, a full beard that could hardly hide sharp canine teeth that protruded from its powerful jaws. The beast also had scars that spoke of its story

‘’What did you give her, rainmaker?’’ the deep grave voice boomed through the room.

‘’What are you taking about?’’ Guma tried to feign innocence. He knew very well what the beast was talking about

. The concoction he had given Lishevi to give Vuyanzi enabled the bride to refuse the magnetism of the beast. Guma was against the idea but Lishevi insisted, she didn’t want her granddaughter to fall for a beast. The beasts had an allure they use to attract their brides with but with the right potion taken, the bride would be able to resist the draw. But this resistance came with heavy consequences.

With a growl of frustration, the beast moved through the room as fast as the wind and stood before Guma. Lifting the frail old man by his shirt with one large hairy hand or paw. Guma strived to breathe as he first looked at the ancient beast that had recently taken the form of man but not yet a complete man. Judging by his half man half beast appearance. Its yellow eyes were shining like orbs in the dark.

‘’Put me…down…first,’’ Guma struggled to let the words out.

‘’Why? You are trying to keep her away from me. I should kill you now and get her, no one will stop me,’’ the beast roared. Its words coming out harsh. Guma was transfixed by the strength of the beast. With just a grip of its muscled arm it was able to raise him and it didn’t appear to even flex a muscle. Guma only hoped that the beast would not shed its claws, which would be the end of him.

‘’I…can help with…your transformation…I can help you….be…come a full man,’’ Guma sputtered, if the beast increased his grip on him, he would surely pass out. The beast seemed to consider his words and eased its grip on the old man but he didn’t set him down immediately. Guma decided to sweeten his words.

‘’If you transformed into a complete man, you can charm her into liking you,’’ Guma went on. When he was an apprentice for the previous medicine man he had been told that the beasts had only one weaknesses, their brides. They were possessive of the human females and would do anything for them.

‘’She is already mine, rainmaker.’’ The beast roared tightening its grip again. ’’I will not have you giving her that harmful substance. It hurts her brain and makes her sick.’’

‘’Okay…please let me down.

. If you kill me now you will be breaking rules.’’ Guma said, he was beginning to feel light headed. If what he was taught was true, spirit warriors never killed human beings, it was sacrilege.

The beast released a final growl and threw him down. Guma quickly rose to his feet, he didn’t want the beast to leave, not yet, he had so many questions for the mythical creature that people only rumored to exist. Like why hadn’t the beast fully transformed into his human body? Where did he live? Was he planning on taking Lishevi’s granddaughter away? To where? What if the girl said no to him? What then? Would he force himself on her? Guma held a soft

‘’I will never force myself on my bride. Never.’’ The beast growled, its roar echoing in the walls of the hut.

Guma was fascinated, the beast could read his thoughts.

‘’You have so many questions rainmaker. I will not be providing answers. All I do is warn you to stay away from her and stop misleading her grandmother. If you do not, I will come for you and kill you. Keep away from her.’’ with that warning the beast disappeared as quietly as he came.

Why was the beast referring to him as a rainmaker? He was a medicine man.

The candle lit again on its own. Guma could not hold back. He had to tell someone, he had to travel a journey that had been long in the making.

Travel very far away for answers.
