Chapter one.

Vuyanzi Amani ran as fast as her legs could carry her. If she was caught, she would have to say goodbye to the small rabbit that she had cradled on her arms. It was the last one she had saved and Vuyanzi hoped to reunite it with its family in the bush. Kweyu had a sick pleasure of hunting down rabbits and fattening them up for their meat that is after he was done hitting them. Vuyanzi had witnessed firsthand in horror how Kweyu always hit the rabbits head with a hockey stick till it dies before skinning it and ordering it be cooked by one of the many house helps in his father’s mansion . Since that day she had vowed to save all the rabbits in the compound. The first time she had sneaked inside the compound she was surprised to see other than rabbits, Kweyu also had wild guinea fowls. His dog Risasi was emaciated, scruffy and constantly kicked by its crazy owner.

She quickly darted into some thickets and placed fallen twigs around her praying that they would not find her. She ignored the sharp pain as a thorn punctured her arm and blood oozed out. She listened keenly to hear if they had followed her but all she heard was the sounds of crickets around her. The sun was about to set so she hoped that they would not see her slight form in the bushes.

She was just beginning to relax when she heard voices and footfalls coming towards her

. They had found her. She held the rabbit more closely and pulled her legs closer to her chest being careful not to squeeze the rabbit. She hoped that if she made herself small enough they would not see her and be on their way.

She saw several pair of feet stop near the bushes she was and her breath held.

‘’ Find me that sungura, (rabbit)’’ a voice commanded, it belonged to Kweyu, the resident biggest bully. She disliked him a lot. He was always mean to her and cruel to animals.

‘She has to be here somewhere, she is a small girl find her and find my sungura,’ he kept ranting as his minions obeyed. Kweyu always had a following. He was always in a company of four other boys who blindly obeyed his every command.

‘’How did she manage to run so fast, she is a girl for crying out loud?’’ Kweyu bellowed frustrated and despite her predicament Vuyanzi held back a smile.

Vuyanzi found it easy to enter Kweyu’s father’s compound. Kweyu’s opulent mansion was situated on the leafy neighborhoods where the rich and the wealthy resided. Far away from her home. The neighborhood bordered Nyati Game reserve, which expanded over acres and acres of savannah grassland and it was home to a variety of wild animals. The most iconic ones were the ‘big five’ the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. The game reserve was named after the buffalo because of the high number of buffalos in the area more than in any other game reserve in the region. Apart from the big five a variety of other animals could be found in the reserve. The reserve was a tourist attraction from people from all over the world.

Vuyanzi was able to access Kweyu’s home because Risasi, Kweyu’s dog was easily bribed, or rather it was always starving. Vuyanzi always had a piece of dry fish whenever she visited the compound. On the far side of the boma (compound), there was a small break in the fence that had not yet been mended and Vuyanzi made sure to use it always to hide her small getaway with twigs so that it cannot be found but on this particular day it had been discovered. She had gone there with a mindset of freeing the last rabbit but she found that Risasi had a broken leg and she was in the process of helping him when she heard Kweyu make his way into the rundown animal shed. She quickly grabbed the last rabbit from its small and dirty cage and made her escape vowing to come back for the guinea fowls next time.

Kweyu was hot on her trail shouting at her, threatening her and commanding her to stop. She didn’t even spare a glance behind. Before she knew it, Kweyu had called his followers to help in hunting her down. She had quickly foregone the route home and ran into the forest. She was planning to release the rabbit and make her way home after losing them but she was now trapped in a thicket with the bullies surrounding her.

The group had scattered and only Kweyu remained. He took in a deep breath and started to turn around when the rabbit started fussing on Vuyanzi’s arms. It was as if it sensed its tormentor nearby and wanted to get away. Suddenly it hopped from her arms, into the ground and away from the thicket. Vuyanzi gasped in horror when she saw Kweyu turn around and run after the rabbit. Vuyanzi quickly came out of the bush without a thought and ran after the rabbit too. This action took Kweyu by surprise and he gave chase after Vuyanzi.

Vuyanzi knew that if Kweyu caught her, he would hit her. That boy was known for his cruelty, he had once attacked a young girl and pelted her with stones till she cried out just because the she had asked directions from him and his group of bullies. Kweyu’s father had cleared the matter with the police and no charges were pressed despite the girl being in a critical condition in the hospital. That was how powerful his father was in their community.

‘’ When I catch you, you are going to regret ever coming near my home,’’ Kweyu shouted as he gave chase. His long legs eating up more ground. Vuyanzi knew that it was a matter of time before Kweyu caught up to her.

She looked behind to see where Kweyu was and was surprised not seeing him. Had he given up? She slowed down to catch her breath, she looked around and noticed that the rabbit was long gone, her chest was heaving with labored breaths and her hands were on her knees. She was taking in long breaths when something knocked her down taking her breath away.

Kweyu.

She was caught.

Vuyanzi tried to breath but Kweyu was sitting on her chest cutting her breath. His bony fingers wrapped on her slender neck chocking the breath out of her. She was gasping for air as she tried to push him away from her.

‘’ I am going to kill you, this will teach you to never come near my home again, chokora wewe (street urchin)’’ Kweyu was saying a crazed look coming to his eyes.

. Vuyanzi knew that he was saying the truth. She was going to die. Vuyanzi tried to push him away but he was too heavy. She thrashed around but Kweyu held on chocking the life out of her.

From the peripheral she could see Kweyu’s gang standing around, with the fading light and dizziness that covered her eyes, she could hardly see their faces but she could hear their snickers and jeering.

Her life flitted before her, she would finally be joining her mama and baba in heaven. Her mother’s big smile and her father’s kind eyes, she missed them so much it hurt, even though she never knew them. Her grandmother would cry for her, dear old shosho (grandmother) she would hurt so much. Her energy was slowly slipping away and the fight living her body. Kweyu’s hands still wrapped around her neck like a snake when she heard it, a roar. A lion’s roar. The last thought in her head were screams and Kweyu being ripped away from her. Everything went black after that.

Vuyanzi, my bride, a voice called out to her.
