Jamiu woke up early the next day and was surprised to find Sumayyah still asleep, because he knew she was an early riser. He tried to wake her without removing the blanket that was covering her.
“Sumayyah, wake up.” She didn’t reply. He looked at the bedside table and saw the packets of drugs on it. Jamiu began to get worried, so she tapped her again “Sumayyah, please wake up.” Her body felt warm to his touch.

“Yes” Sumayyah replied in a low tone.

“Thank God you are awake . “Are you ill?”
“No, I am not.” Sumayyah tried to sit up in bed but failed as she was very weak.

Jamiu did not believe her. “Really? Then why are you warm all over and your eyes are blood-shot?”

“N-nothing”

“Nothing? What about the drugs, then?”

“I just took them because I was stressed out yesterday, and I forgot to put it back in its place.” Sumayyah hurriedly packed up the drugs and returned them to the drawer. She rose from the bed and tried to walk to the bathroom while hiding her limp. Jamiu immediately noticed that she was hiding something from him.

“Sumayyah, what happened to your leg?”

Summayah shook her head and replied. “Nothing.”
“OK, if you say so.”

Summayah tried to apologise to him again

. “Listen, I am sorry for what happened yesterday. I tried to apologise last night, but you were already asleep. I promise to adjust.”

Jamiu sighed. “I am not angry anymore”

Sumayyah beamed happily. “Thank you so much my hu-husband”

Jamiu was unsure if he had heard right. “Did you just call me your husband?”
“Yes, I did.” She joined him on the bed. “Aren’t you?”

Jamiu smiled. “hmmm, if you say so.”

Sumayyah smiled as well. “I have to go to the reception to order a drink”

“Why not call them on phone?”

“I want to take the opportunity to see the view.”

“Alright I will go with you. And don’t argue please.”

They left the room and Sumayyah walked behind Jamiu so he wouldn’t see her limping. Without warning Jamiu turned and saw her.

“Sumayyah, what is the matter?”

She couldn’t find the words to reply.
“Let me take a look at your leg”

“No! I promise it is nothing” Sumayyah began to walk faster. After a while at the reception, Sumayyah began to shiver.
“I want to go in because of the cold”

“But the weather is actually warm” Jamiu was surprised.

“I am feeling very cold”
“OK, let's go”

They promptly returned to their room and Sumayyah fell asleep immediately. Jamiu took the opportunity to check her leg and found the injury. “I knew she was hiding something from me.” He thought. He immediately called the hotel manager and asked for a first aid box, which was delivered in a few minutes. Jamiu proceeded to clean and bandage the injury, after which he fell asleep beside her.

…….

An hour later, Jamiu and Sumayyah woke up, surprised that they had both slept in the same bed. Sumayyah saw that her leg had been cleaned and bandaged and knew Jamiu did it.
“Thank you” She said quietly

“You are welcome. Why did you hide this injury from me.?”

Sumayyah bowed her head. “Nothing.”

“Listen, our marriage will not work if we keep things from each other.” Jamiu scolded her.

“I am sorry. I promise not to hide things from you again.”

“I hope you fulfill this promise you are making now.”

“In shaa Allah, I will. To prove it, ask me to do anything and I will do it for you.”

Jamiu was enjoying this. “Anything?”

Sumayyah nodded. “Yes, anything at all.”

“Alright. I want to see your hair.”

Sumayyah froze. “My hair?”

“Yes. I want to see your hair. Remember you promised to do anything for me.”

Sumayyah knew she had to keep her promise so she reluctantly removed her hijab. Jamiu gasped when he saw how breathtaking she looked.

“Wow, Sumayyah you are so pretty. You look pretty with your hijab, but you are even more beautiful without it.” Jamiu held her face in his hands and looked into her eyes when he noticed that she was avoiding his gaze. “Don’t be shy. I am your husband remember?”

“Thank you. You know, I have never removed my hijab in front of any male except my dad and brothers”
Jamiu chuckled. “I understand Sumayyah. Thank you for doing that for me. Can you do one last thing for me?”
“Of course.”

“Can I kiss you.”

“Hmmmm,I ...I...don’t t...think....I am ready for that”, She stammered.

Jamiu laughed hard at how flustered she looked. “Sumayyah, just relax okay. I was only joking with you.”

Sumayyah covered her face in embarrassment. “You shouldn’t have done that. You know if not for the pain in my leg, I would have beaten you up.”

“That’s not true girl, you can’t beat me up... too tiny.”  Jamiu teased

“My hands are not tiny. Let me show you” She tried to get up and forgot about her injured foot. “Awwww, my leg.” She cried as pain shot through her leg.

Jamiu was at her side in an instant. “You shouldn’t have tried to walk...just relax okay.”

He lifted her into his arms and carried her over to the chair. I never knew you were this heavy.” He teased.

“Stop teasing me, I am not heavy.”

“You are,” he said gently placing her on the chair.

“I am not.”

“Okay, I accept defeat”

Sumayyah squealed in delight. “Yay, I won.”

Jamiu grew serious. “Sumayyah, please tell me about your sickness.”.

She sighed. “I am a sickle cell patient. I usually have crises, most times when I am stressed. When it occurs, I always feel like dying due to the pain, which can be unbearable sometimes. Most times I end up on admission in the hospital.” She paused. Jamiu was surprised that one so young could endure so much pain. Sumayyah continued.

“Alhamdulillah, I thank Allah (S.W.T) for His mercies on me because some of my mates or those that are younger to me have died due to this illness but here I am- alive and well.”

“Alhamdulilah, you are correct.” Jamiu said

“I just pray it won’t come any time soon”

“It won’t okay? Always remember that I am here with you.” Jamiu reassured her. “Let’s stay indoors today so your leg can heal faster.”
“I agree. Let me take the opportunity to call my mum.”

Sumayyah dialled her mum’s number and they talked for a while before hanging up. Jamiu talked about their future ambitions and when the waiter brought their food, they ate and then continued their discussion. They joked and laughed before Jamiu arranged their clothes in the bag in preparation for their return trip the next day.
