Starting over
It was 1:30 am. Even in the darkness Bolanle could make out the outline of her husband’s sleeping body. He was at the extreme end of the bed, his back turned against her. It had been like this for quite a while. Denrele her husband had not looked her way, touched her food or even touched her in close to 4 months. She found it difficult to decide which she found more unpleasant, the uneasy calm that made her feel she was walking on egg shells or the loathsome shouting matches . He had never hit her before but she feared he would one day ever since the day he threw a glass up at her head. She was lucky but she was deeply shaken. She had to gingerly tip-toe across the room, as there were shards of glass strewn everywhere.
It was a quiet but there was the drone of a distant generator. She got up gently, not wanting to stir her sleeping husband. As she left the bedroom, she decided to check on their daughter.
Temi was a beautiful girl with exceptional intelligence. She also possessed a rare wisdom that was well beyond her age of 4. She looked so cherubic in her Hello Kitty sleepwear. Bolanle used the duvet to cover her more snugly as she had flung the bedclothes aside in a moment of restlessness. She kissed Temi’s forehead and said “I am doing this for you, my sweetheart

. You are all I have”. Fighting back tears, she let her gaze wander across the gaily decorated room and felt a pang of weariness. “It should have been perfect. We both wanted our home to be perfect. We put so much into this marriage. We had great dreams. Where did things go wrong? How did things get so bad?” She pondered.
The hoot of an owl drew her back to reality. “I had better get back to bed”, she whispered. She was reluctant to go back to the bed she shared with her husband but he had forbidden her from sleeping in any of the guest rooms. “If you want to sleep there, you’d better start paying rent” he had said.
She eventually returned to the master bedroom and climbed back into bed. Just she was about to shut her eyes and allow the waves of sleep to carry her into dreamland, Denrele coughed and jolted her back to life. He turned to face her and then he went back to sleep immediately. He looked so vulnerable in his sleep that Bolanle had to fight the urge to kiss him.
Horrified at what she had nearly done, she hugged the bedclothes to herself. She knew for sure that she could not continue to live with Derenle but she had just made a shocking discovery.
She could not live without him either.
