Over six years ago

Jimmy is a doctor.  I met his best friend back when i went to visit him in med school.

He had insisted on renting an apartment despite my parent’s protest that staying in the school hostels would be cheaper. He even got a job to pay for the apartment. It now made sense why Jimmy and Uri got on so well . They were both over achievers but at the same time had a big heart to accommodate any one. Uri was his roommate.

At the time i went to visit my brother, Uri had gone home to attend his sister’s wedding. Three days into visiting my brother, i met a girl who i had known back in our high school days. Her name was Daphney. She invited me to her birthday party that was to occur the following day. I opted to go because my brother was really busy being a med student and i could do some alone time exploring of the campus.

The party was nice. No alcohol involved. We were only about twelve people in her apartment. We just played silly games, did sing alongs’ and shared silly and fun stories. At one point we came to the dancing to the beat part.

“Ella you used to dance well back in high school you should open the dance floor.” Daphney said.

Everyone went on shouting, Ella, Ella. The music was placed on and the mood was set

. I did not see any problem dancing in front of a bunch of strangers. I let my body join into the rhythm and danced my heart out. The cheering from the small crowd made the dance to be intense. One of the guys with the cutest dimples on earth joined in and we danced a good while before the rest of the group joined in and started free styling.

After the party i went straight to my brother’s apartment. I was spent. I laid on a small sofa my brother had.  Jimmy came a few minutes later and offered to make dinner. I took the remote and switched the TV on. A program known as upbeat was going on.

“Time to dance to the beat brother.” I shouted to Jimmy who was in the kitchen’

“Knock yourself out.” He responded knowing me too well. I could dance till i drop dead on the floor. An upcoming artist was on the show and they were playing all the songs in his album while asking him the story of his journey in between. When they played his first song i was on my toes dancing my heart away to the afro beats in his song. The song lasted for about four minutes.

“Men i could do this all day.” I shouted while resuming the previous position in the couch.

“I need some energy drink if i am to keep up.” I said to myself then rose again from the chair and turned.

He stood at the door. He had been watching me this whole time. The guy with the amazing dimples from the party.

. Slightly embarrassed i stared at him.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him

“I live here, question is what are YOU doing here?”

“I  ... uuuhm my brother lives here.”

Before the conversation could continue Jimmy emerged from the kitchen area.

“Uri you back already?…this is my one and only sister Ella.”

“Nice to meet you Ella.” He offered his hand for a greeting as if he was seeing me for the first time.

“Nice to meet you too.”

The following day I left.

I did not talk to Jimmy for two days after that.

I was intrigued by Uri. I wish my stay at their campus was much longer but i had a psychology paper waiting for me. After sitting for the paper, i could not wait any longer. I rang Jimmy’s number.

“Hello Jimmy,”

“Hey, you. I hope you travelled safe. How was the psychology paper?”

“It was okay.” I responded.

“Sorry I didn’t call, between class and work i couldn’t find the time.”

“I understand.”

I waited for a half a minute for him to say what I yearned to hear. He didn’t.

“How can two brilliant mind stay in the same room?” I asked Jimmy.

“I guess the two brilliant minds understand the benefits of co-dependence.” He said jocundly.

“He must be a nice room-mate.” I continued probing.

“Mmmmm… I wonder how you determined that.”

“I study psychology remember.” I said defensively.

“Come–on Jimmy, tell me.”

“He asked about you yesterday. I told him you had exams today.”

That night I slept well. In my dreams I was married with three kids. Two boys and one girl.
