The Reunion - Episode 11

 

What makes the world go round? Some would say money, some …would say people, and some would say some scientific load of crap. Mariah would say love. She had been with a couple of guys that didn’t treat her right ,but she was a hopeless romantic that believed that the heart breaks were there to make the real deal see more authentic . She dressed up for her dinner date in a long black dress that had a modest but sheer bodice; Lisa was in a black jumpsuit that captured her petit statue amazingly.

Lisa had a lot on her plate ,she tried to get in touch with jerry ,but somehow …Jerry didn’t want to be reached ,he didn’t pick up her calls ,neither did he reply her text ,she basically dressed up in the hopes of running into him . As they both made their way to the dining area, they walked with a sort of confidence that all girls should have, they made their way knowing that they were queens that didn’t need a man, in a way. 

“See Michael.” Lisa said as she nudged Mariah in the direction of Michael and a lady that looked like she crawled off the cover of a magazine.

“Now is the time that I start to feel self conscious, but I don’t really care that he’s with a …that.” she rambled till she was speechless “okay, I lied …look at her, and she’s flawless.”  Mariah continued.

“But she’s not you, I wonder where jerry is.” Lisa replied ,as they looked round in search of jerry ,it hit Mariah ,that she wasn’t on a special dinner date with Michael ,it was a class dinner date ,he was in fact killing two birds with one stone .

“I’m sure he’ll be around soon, everyone is here.” she replied as she scanned through the large crowd. After an hour of roaming around effortlessly in search of jerry, Michael finally wriggled his way out of the hold of the magazine lady.

“You look beautiful.” he said charmingly to Mariah, and the girly girl in her blushed.

“Thank you, you don’t look so bad yourself.” she said, he looked really good, and she knew it.

“Hey Lisa, you look …good.” he said half heartedly and all he got from Lisa was a look filled with sneer

.  they made their way to a round table for six ,Lisa sat close to Mariah ,who sat close to Michael ,who sat close to magazine girl, he didn’t even give a proper introduction ,Mariah thought to herself ,as they awaited the dinner ,Judith and her wifely minions approached their table ,they exchanged all sorts of fake pleasantries as Judith looked as happy as ever .

“Mariah right? “One of the minions asked 

“Yes, Adesua right?” Mariah shot back.

“Yes, I heard you work at a supermarket…aren’t you too old for that?” she asked with no hidden contempt in her voice, Lisa was about to bounce back with a reply on behalf of her friend but Mariah stopped her none verbally.

“That’s what I thought when I saw her too.” Judith whined like a disappointed mother. “My husband owns a publishing house …shey you’re an English major and all that, just send in your CV, we will get you a job.” Judith said proudly, all the while, giggling at the side with adesua.

“Which husband? the one cheating on you abi ?” Lisa finally shot back ,Mariah looked at her and nudged her to shut up ,even Michael’s attention drifted off his magazine girl ,but he showed no signs of caring ,if anything ,Mariah looked at him and noticed that his expression was a happy one . He planned the whole night, she thought. He wanted Mariah to know about the affair, he wanted Judith to find out. And then the whole thing hit her, this reunion was all about the drama, she looked around and noticed the camera’s everywhere.

“What?” Judith asked as her minions leaned in for the details.

“Your publisher husband is cheating on you.” Lisa said, but this time she said it sadly, it had finally dawned on her that Judith was mean, but she was also a woman that wasn’t treated right. Judith was speechless; she searched into Mariah’s eyes for some kind of hint that it was all a lie.

“It’s true.” Mariah said. “I saw him.”

“I get that you still act like a bunch of wild single girls …but what happens between my husband and I, is nobody’s business, nobody asked you, so the next time you see something, shut your slutty mouths and walk away.” Judith yelled and everyone’s attention was on their table, except Michael. Judith walked away angrily, and so did her minions, after spitting a word or two about Lisa and Mariah being home breakers, talk about shooting the messenger, they thought to themselves.

Dinner was finally served ,and so was jerry …he walked into the dining area like he was walking on a red carpet ,he looked as dapper as ever ,and so did his pregnant sister ,they scanned the area for an empty table till their eyes landed on Lisa’s table ,Lisa could sense his reluctance to move ,but he ended up sitting beside her .

“So how was your day?” Mariah asked in an attempt to start a conversation with Michael.

“Fine, thank you.” he replied, he barely looked at her before returning his attention to the magazine girl, Mariah overheard her name, she was a coco and by her accent, she was an African American. Mariah was fed up, Lisa and jerry had reconciled by the looks of things, they were laughing and having all the fun in the world. Suddenly, she felt like she was all alone …and for the first time in her life, she needed a drink.

“I’m so sorry about how I acted earlier, I shouldn’t have walked away.” Lisa said apologetically 

“Its cool.” jerry replied “I shouldn’t have avoided your calls.” he said as he placed his hands on hers 

“It’s cool.” Lisa imitated, and they both smiled knowingly.

“Too bad you missed the breakfast, if you see the food.” Jerry expressed vaguely “you missed of.”  He said jokingly. “But seriously, I felt really bad when you walked away.” he said 

“I know, I’m sorry …I don’t know why I did that.” She replied disappointedly.

“I think I do, you don’t want to let me in, you don’t think I’m old enough to date you? Am I on the right track?” he asked.

“Something like that.” 

“I’m sure you’ve heard  this before ,but age is truly what they say it is ,it’s just a number …I might be a couple years younger than you ,but it doesn’t make a difference ,I really like you lis ,and I get that you are a bit skeptical about it, just give me another chance to convince you.” He said nicely as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze, she smiled, because that was the one thing that showed how she truly felt.

“done.” she replied excitedly.

“just don’t walk away this time , or ever .” he said ,all he knew was that he liked her…she knew it too ,she also knew that his chances were limited …but who was she to say no to what she assumed was ‘faith’.
