Few weeks on, Uzor and I were merely housemates as I had moved into Ada’s room and he brought that girl into the house occasionally . That didn’t stop me from being a good woman and mother.

I finally found a way to do what I’ve always wanted. I’ve always wanted to be a caterer but Uzor insisted I didn’t work and rather be a full time house wife. Though I wasn’t comfortable with the idea as I never enjoyed being idle but I had to please my “husband”.

Business was booming as I already had an Instagram page where I displayed the food made in my kitchen and with everyone requesting to have a taste of my food, it wasn’t difficult to get clients.

On a Saturday morning, I had some orders to prepare for and with the influx of work, I sent Ada off to spend the weekend with Dera as she needed help , at least Ada can assist around the house . The main reason was, Ada always asked who the lady was and I ran out of excuses, I had to send her away during the weekend. With Ada been away, I had enough time to focus on my orders.

“Good morning”. I heard a female voice say as she interrupted  my thoughts.

“Good morning”. I replied.

“The food you made last night was really peppery

. I could barely finish a spoon. Learn to reduce the pepper next time”. She said and made her way to the fridge.

I turned and looked at her and didn’t respond, the old me would have attacked her but the new me was happy and had found inner peace. She opened the fridge and she brought out a pack of juice and drank directly from the pack.

I walked close to her with a glass cup

“In a civilised country, a civilised person would use a cup to drink juice but that just tells me where you’re from and who you are. I really don’t know where Uzor picks the likes of you”. That said I stepped out of the kitchen.

I perceive she was dumbfounded and her mouth agape. I cared less.

I was packing food I just prepared to deliver to my customers when Uzor walked into the kitchen. I was dressed in a body con that accentuated my curves and I had a new hair do. As I busied myself with packaging of the food, Uzor busied himself with staring at me. Food packed and I was ready to go..

“I don’t remember giving you the permission to start this business of yours”. I heard from behind.

“And where’s my food woman” he continued opening the empty pots that sat on top of the gas.

With divorce in the works, I didn't feel entitled to him.

“Uzor, currently we are housemates, once the divorce is finalised, we cease to exist as a couple. We are only parents to a beautiful child”. I started to walked out but stopped in my tracks

“I no longer need your permission to be a better version of myself and also tell your high maintenance girlfriend to fix you something to eat, I rather save my energy”. With that I walked out of the house.

On the drive out, I felt good about myself. The confidence I once felt was absent was restored to maximum potential. I was going to live on my own terms. I already planned the next step once divorce is done. I was going to file for full custody of Ada and allow weekend visit to her dad’s, I would also improve my business and serve God more than ever.

I got back to the house and met the kitchen in a total mess. It was a caricature of the perfect kitchen I had left earlier. Having bought fruits on my way back from my outing, I had what to eat before bed.

Whilst cleaning a knife and plates to use as Uzor girlfriend seemed to have used up all the plate in the dish tray because she was making spaghetti, Uzor walked in

“What are you cooking for me? I’m so famished” Uzor said

“I thought your iyawo made something that looked like spaghetti?” I said looking at the remnant which looked like tomato sauce spaghetti but the colour was different to what I was used to.

My confidence had spiked and I was enjoying it.

“ Don’t play smart with me Sinach, I’m hungry”.

“ I’m sorry Uzor. I’m not cooking tonight”. I replied.

My fruits diced, I made my way out of the kitchen.

“You know I’m still your husband right?” Uzor asked.

“Please tell your girlfriend to clean up before tomorrow morning or I won’t cook in this house tomorrow”.

I smiled and walked out of the kitchen. He was and is still my husband but I was no longer interested in the relationship.

The next morning , I was dressed for church but walked into the kitchen first. I met it so clean and spotless. I smiled and made my way to the door, Uzor stood in the exit

“You haven’t cooked, I’m hungry”. He said holding his stomach.

“As you can see, I’m dressed up for church, I would cook when I return”. I replied

He took his time to look at me and his eyes lit up with attraction. He stared at me for what seem like an eternity as he undressed me with his eyes.

“Hello, please can you step aside, I’m running late” I said cutting his day dream short.

He finally made way but could feel his eyes peering through me.

After church service, I went straight to Dera’s house to eat and also pick Ada. I wasn’t anybody’s slave. Dera was proud of me when I told her about my encounters with Uzor.

On our way home around  5pm, with Ada in the car, our stomach stuffed for the night, the car starts to jerk and eventually came to a halt. I alighted from the vehicle and opened the bonnet of the car but it looked like a matrix. I had zero knowledge on the mechanics of a car. Thirty minutes gone, I was clueless on what to do. My effort to flag down a car proved abortive as everyone seemed in a hurry to get home or do whatever.

Almost 6pm and with no help in sight, I resolved to park the car in a more convenient location then take a taxi home and called the mechanic to pick the car from this location the next day.

I envisaged pushing the car in my kitten heels, it seemed impossible but gradually I began to push the car slowly to its resting place for the night. I looked to my side and I noticed somebody join me. We got to a suitable location and stopped.

“ Thank you for helping, I’m grateful”. I said to the handsome stranger.

“You’re welcome”. He replied with a reassuring smile.

He had a pleasing and an handsome face, he looked good and his cologne was lovely.

“Where are you going from here”. He said interrupting my thoughts .

“Not too far from here”.

. I replied.

“Maybe I could drop you?” He offered.

I agreed and called Ada out of the car. He saw her and smiled. He introduced himself as Yemi and we walked to his car.
“Who dropped you off moments ago?” Uzor asked as he opened the door.

“ The car broke down and he offered to help us get to our destination”. I replied trying to take off my shoes.

“He”? He replied wide eyed

“Ada go into the room and take off your clothes, mummy would come bath you soon”. I said to Ada because I knew Uzor was about to explode.

“Okay mum”. Ada walked away.

“So you are dating someone already? We are not fully divorced and you’re dating someone already?” Uzor said.

“This is the situation of pot calling kettle black. You’ve been the one with a girl in this house and a stranger offers a ride and you are worked up? I have no strength for this”.

“Don’t walk out on me woman. I’m still your husband”. He tried to pull me back.

I pull my hand away from his grip.

“Don’t ever try to pull me like that again”. Shoes in my hands, I walked away.

He stood there transfixed and surprised I could respond in such manner. This was the first of many confrontations before I leave this house.
