The Deathlike Mission - Episode 2

 

Kari could feel butterflies in her stomach as she stood by the transparent glass wall watching the suspect she was about to interrogate in the room.

John Malik sat casually in his chair. He was a man about his mid-thirties. The look on his face told that he wasn’t at all bothered being in detention because he will soon be released by a greater power. This thought infuriated her so much so that it became visible . He spoke to the junior detectives with so much effontery, his body language boasted of his crime but the pride about looked like he was assured of his freedom as soon possible. Kari’s eyebrows arched as she thought of the best way possible  to breakthrough the walls of defiance put up by this suspect.

“Are you alright?” Laura asked noticing her uneasiness.

“Yea, just wondering the source of his guts.”

“I feel his confidence too, but aren’t they always like that, playing though on the outside whilst in the inside they are begging for mercy?”

“I’ll see about that, let me get this done with”, with that she walked to the door. Two junior agents situated there made a way for her while one followed her in. Once inside, she dragged a chair motioning to the officer who followed her, “Its ok peter, you can wait by the door” He gave her a ‘You may be in danger with this guy’ look

. “I’ll be fine”, she quickly reassured him. With that peter left to be by the door but not with them out of his sight.

Kari quickly shot a side glance to Laura who still stood at the other side of the transparent glass wall as she sat on the chair directly facing the suspect, a table being the only object occupying the space between them. Laura gave her a thumbs-up while she smiled back and returned her attention to the suspect.

“John malik?” she started, half-asking

“The SIB should have known better than assigning a lady to interrogate me,” he said in a voice cold as ice.

“Really, trying to maintain a though exterior right? I see, but that won’t help you in anyway in here, so the earlier you start talking the better for you.”

“You won’t hear anything from me, try as hard as you can lady detective,” he replied with utmost hubris.

“Very well then let’s try. You were caught in possession of a truck load of weaponry including certain explosives. I cannot ask you what it was meant for because obviously it was for mass destruction.” Leaning forward toward him with her both elbows resting on the table she further inquired, “Where were those two trucks headed and who are the masterminds behind this?”

“I already told you, i have nothing to say. Come to think of, you saw in my possession bombs meaning they belonged to me.”

“Is that so? Well that’s not what it looks like to us. Those explosives are worth quite a fortune, and from the findings we have about you Mr Malik, you do not possess the the financial capacity to purchase those. So you can either start talking or you are going to be in for a lot of torture,” Kari spat angrily.

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“Yes you do, you know what i think?”

“No, tell me,” he replied with a hint of mockery in his voice.

“I think you are part of a plan to stage a bombing attack somewhere which you are going to tell me soon enough and also the people behind it.”

“Well, if that was the plan, i had no idea.” Kari gave a wry laugh and stood to her feet.

“You will say everything Malik, i will get the truth from you that i can assure you.” With that she pushed back the chair and made her way to the door, talking to both detectives on guard. “Find a cell to put this idiot in for the night,” then  turning to back to Malik who was was starring at her his head turned sideways so to face her, anger burning in his eyes, she continued. “We will continue tomorrow.”

“Wait!,” Malik called standing up as she turned to leave.

“You got something to say to say to me?”

“I will get out of here in no time, i will find you and tear you into tiny bits, that’s a promise?”

“Really, how possible?” She asked calmly following his lead.

“They will get me out, they always do and they won’t fail me this time!” he barked. Kari tilted her head sideways and gave a soft laugh.

“I’ll be waiting Mr Malik.” discovering he had almost blown his cover, Malik pounded his right cuffed hand angrily on the table attracting peter’s attention.

“Any problem Kari?” he asked concerned.

“No peter, i’m beginning to make progress. He just confirmed my suspicion. Put him in a highly secured cell, we’ll continue tomorrow,” she repeated making her way out.

“Fuck you! I’ll kill you, that’s a promise!” she heard Malik from behind her as he struggled with the detectives. Kari merely smiled at Laura.

“Great job girl, i told you they are mostly soft in the inside.”

“I got what i needed for the first phase of my investigation.”

“Bravo!”

“It’s tougher, we need to find out who exactly is behind that guy.”

“I agree, but you really need to be careful, that ass hole just confirmed his powerful source. Whoever they may be, their van containing valuable material is missing and they know very well in whose hands it is.”

“Yea, i know that.”

“Glad you do. So what’s next?”

“I have to see the Chief immediately, and i need you to help me inform Paul on what’s new ok?”

“Always at your service madam,” she smiled.

“Alright then, see you in a bit.”

They parted ways. Laura headed for their office, while Kari headed for the elevator to the next top floor. There was a little sparkle of relief surging through her, somehow, just somehow she had managed to make him talk. Its a good start she thought as she stepped out of the elevator and made her way to the SIB’s Chief office. He needs to know that there are strong forces who always got Malik out of detention whenever he got caught carrying out thier assignments, and together, along with her team they should be able to uncover whoever the masterminds are.
