Koni watched as Amani entered her home before he drove away. He was itching being in clothes the whole day and the being in a car didn’t help. He rolled down the window to allow fresh air in and do away with Vuyanzi’s mouthwatering scent of oranges and pineapples. Being near her and not touching her was killing him. And her face paint was so spot on . He could not help reacting towards her like that, his jaw was aching because he was holding back his canines from dropping and piercing her skin, marking her as his bride. He barely contained his eyes from glowing, he was sure she had seen their unnatural color. He was more proud that she had not ran away from him. It was only a matter of time before she knew of his true nature.

Koni was proud of his bride, she was a beautiful girl just like it had been fated. As a reward to their sacrifice, the spirit warriors were granted dancing brides as their mates. The two were paired off after they were born, the girls having a necklace around their neck that would glow whenever their warrior was around.

Koni was born a spirit warrior, he was able to shift from a man and beast at a moment’s notice. It was said that the only time a spirit warrior had a hard time shifting was when he met his dancing bride. Koni looked at his nails and noticed that the claws were out, again

. He was tired of putting on closed shoes since his toe claws kept getting on his way more than once.

Koni and his brothers (not by birth) had a duty to protect the community from amanani, ancient beasts which caused havoc and chaos to human beings. The amanani could also change into human bodies but only by possessing a human body or an animal as a host, as they had recently learned.

Vuyanzi, as his dancing bride was in danger of being dragged into the fight between amanani and the spirit warrior, him. She didn’t know this and he didn’t know how to go about it. In the ancient days, a beast would claim his bride, disappear into the forest with her, and force her to stay with him until she accepted him, mated with him. A warrior was that loyal towards a bride and he did not allow anything to hurt her, even himself. It was a not new to hear of a beast who died to protect his bride. Though the stories were rare, they were there.

In the modern world, Koni tried to curb his basic instincts to stalk Amani down and force her to mate with him.

. His brother Manute insisted that he had to seduce her to bring her closer to him. Manute insisted that Koni had his work done with the pure magnetism between them, he had to be patient, and nature would automatically bring the two of them together. It was easier said than done. Koni could barely his animal side in check. Every time he was near her, he wanted to pounce on her, take her away where they would be alone and claim her.

Koni had a feeling that Amani did not take kindly being bossed around. This evening was the first time they met and she had gone ahead to defy him. Technically it was not the first time they met but it was the first time that she had seen him in his human form and partly beast if he was counting the glowing eyes. Koni felt like she was going to be a challenge and he relished at it. He loved challenges. What he could not entertain was her defying him while her life was in danger.

He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he did not hear his phone ring until the third time. He checked the caller and found his brother Dume, Koni cursed, he was always keen but trust Amani to wreak havoc to his head.

‘’Dume, naambie (talk to me),’’ Koni barked into his phone, his brother better be calling about something important.

’Buda, why do you sound like that? I thought you would be halfway to your honeymoon by now.’’ Dume laughed at the expense of his brother.

‘’What do you want?’’

‘’From the tone of your voice, I don’t think that all went with Amani, did she turn you down?’’ Dume went on his tone mocking.

‘’Dume…’’ Koni growled in warning.

‘’Oh yeah, we have a situation at the reserve,’’ Dume’s tone became grim once again.

‘’I am on my way.’’ Koni cut the call and sped out of town.

A short but sweet chapter.

 Enjoy.
