Obiefuna's Narration

I had hectic few days and ended up in the hand of an old woman who took me as her child. She owned a small kiosk. I lived with her and she sheltered me and gave me food daily. She sold provisions and I helped her to hawk pure water around the market. I did this for the whole two years. I was sixteen years and had grown thick skin . I had learnt to talk back to people without being scared. She lived in a ghetto, and I had blended slightly to the ghetto life. I learnt everything from the area. I didn't care about going back to school any longer. I wish I could, but I felt all hopes were lost.

As usual, I was hawking pure water, while I passed a big boutique, a little girl called me that her mummy wants to buy pure water. I turned and went to meet her. I dropped my bowl of pure water and bottled water and sat on the boutique's pavement, while I waited. I heard a voice said, "Ifenyinwa give her money to buy two and collect change". Hearing that name, sent me back to memory lane. I remember my best friend, Ifenyinwa. I kept thinking how she would have gone back to the village to look for me.

"Dont worry, aunt. Let her continue with what she was doing", the voice I supposed was, Ifenyinwa said. While I was still lost in thought

. A young lady tapped me.

"Hello, young man, what have you been thinking?. I have been here staring at you but you seem lost", an angelic voice said. I looked up, there, was a beautiful lady standing by my side.
"I am so sorry", I said.

"Sorry for yourself", she replied. She bought the water she wanted and I gave her change. As she wanted to leave, I yelled, "I was actually thinking about my friend named Ifenyinwa". She looked back, hissed and entered the boutique. I was demoralized and couldn't hawk any longer. I sat there, and kept thinking. Not so long, an older woman walked out. She looked familiar. I guessed that was her aunt.

"Were you not the one that sold water to Ifenyinwa? What are you still doing here?", she said.

"Nothing Ma, I'm trying to rest. I'm tired of this life", I said devastated. She came close and looked at me.

"I don't know but it looked like I knew you from somewhere", she said.

"I think so too. Maybe in my village. My friend's aunt", I said.

"Your friend aunt? Are you Obiefuna", she asked with her hands akimbo.

"Yes, I am", I said, as I stood up.

"Ifenyinwa!!!", she called. Ifenyinwa dragged herself out.

"What's the problem? Is he still here", Ifenyinwa asked.

"Do you know him", her aunt asked.

"I don't think so", Ifenyinwa replied.

"This is Obiefuna", her aunt said.

"Wow", Ifenyinwa said. Her 'wow' didn't have life. It was just there. I felt she had moved on without me.

"So, this is what you came to the city to do?", her aunt asked.

"It's a long story, MA", I said and cried.

"Come in, please", Ifenyinwa said.

. They took me in, and sent the sales girl who I assumed was in her twenties to get food and buy a drink for me. I told them I want to explain everything to them. I did and they were all looking at me with pity.

"Do you still want to go to school?", her aunt asked

"Yes", I said jubilantly.

"Okay, just tell the woman you've been living with that you have found your family", Ifenyinwa's aunt said to me. She gave me some money to give the woman. She also emptied the water and gave me the money. I did like she requested and started living with them. I met Ifenyinwa's elder brother, Emeka who was a year older than I was, and was in the University and her younger sister Ifeoma. Ifenyinwa was in S.S3 and I resumed S.S1 with Ifeoma. Their parents welcomed me as their own children. In less than six months, the affections Ifeoma had for me returned. I was in S.S1 science class and she was an Art student but I still taught her some mathematical problems.

I tink js giving obiefuna money to give the elder woman that harboured him for 2yrs is not a form of appreciation, money isnt evytn, she took him in wtout knowing him, a visitation should been in order. so, they took him in registered him in school without taking back to d village first to reunite with his family, at the same time recount his experience to them or at least having someone send a message to his family about his whereabout. Mama Ebuka, u see ur life! Destiny can only be dekayed. @Obinna carry go, I dey ya side
