"Kpom! Kpom!! Kpom!!"

There was a loud knock on the door. Mama Chimaobim dropped the mirror in her hand on the bed. She stood up and walked toward the door. She opened the pot that laid still on the stove and smoke breezed out of the pot while the aroma saturated all over the room. Standing closely, she looked into the pot and felt satisfied about what she was cooking before closing it back and walked to the door to answer to the knock.

"Who is that?" she asked and squinted lightly.

She opened the door and peered through the net door. "Oh, it's you Mama Oyinda," she said.

"I dey sorry for wetin happen this morning . E no be your fault. I come apologise for my pikin. She no know wetin she do," she said and pushed her head forward to take a closer look at the thick black bag spot that circled in her eyes. She made to touch it but Mama Chimaobim drifted backward.

Just then, Chimaobim and Adanne walked close to the door looking all drained after they'd dropped the gallons of water.

"Hah, you both went to drain yourself with water," Mama Chimaobim said.

Mama Oyinda cackled. "Na why dem be small pikin."

Mama Chimaobim grinned and they both laughed.

"Mama, we have tried," Adanne said.

Mama Oyinda smiled

. "I go come back, come see how your body dey later," she said and gestured

"Thank you. So thoughtful of you," Mama Chimaobim replied.

Mama Oyinda tapped Chimaobim by the head before she walked away. They both opened the net door and walked into their room. Mama Oyinda jammed the door.

"What are you cooking?" Adanne asked beaming with smile. The aroma was out of the world and she couldn't help but lick her lips and savour to it. She moved and sat on the bed. Mama Chimaobim made to walk back to where her pot laid on the stove but Chimaobim drew her back.

"What?" Mama Chimaobim asked.

"What happened to your eyes, Mama?" he asked.

Adanne stood up immediately and walked close to observe her mother's eyes clearly. "Mama, what happened?" she asked.

"See, my food on the stove will burn if you people continue to disturb me," she said and moved close to the table.

She used a rag to uncover the cover of the pot and stirred the rice. She scooped a little with a spoon and placed it into her mouth, wincing as the hotness of the spoon burnt her tongue slightly. Positioning herself, she brought down the pot from the stove, placed it on the table and put off the stove. She turned facing her children as they both sat on the bed staring at her.

"It's really not a big deal. I was trying to act like a peace maker by separating a fight which doesn't concern me, but a stray slap landed on my eyes. Thank God it's really not that serious," she said. "and as you can see, her mother just came to apologise."

"I have told you, mama, I don't like this place. They are too local, see what they have done..." Chimaobim said.

"But mama have has told us she doesn't have money. Maybe when papa makes enough we will move back to our apartment," Adanne interrupted.

Mama Chimaobim smiled at her daughter's wisdom. She is only nine and so smart for her age. The future is bright for us, she thought to herself and let out a full grin.

Mama Chimaobim smiled.

. "You have heard from your sister. We are trying. God will provide."

Chimaobim frowned and turned his face away from his mother, looking at the wall.

"So, how was the river or is it stream?" Mama Chimaobim asked.

"It's actually a tap water. The queue was so long. That's why it took us long to fill the drum," Adanne said and smiled.

"I told you people that this place isn't so bad after all. It's an advanced village," she said and turned, facing the pot on the table.

She opened the pot while holding a rag to prevent getting burnt. She dropped the cover on the table and brought out plates from the rack on the extreme side of the table. She dished the food and called them according to their age to pick it up. Chimaobim grumbled while he took his own and Adanne took her own.

Mama Chimaobim ate the food while her eyes hurt and droplets of tears trickled down in succession. Her eyes itched, and she scratched at every itching. It formed a bump.
