Present Day

It's been a long day without you my friend,

And i'll tell you all about it when i see you again,

We have come a long way from where we began,

Oh! I'll tell you all about it when i see you again.

First you both go out of your way,

And the vibe is feeling strong and what's small turn's to a friendship.

And the friendship turns to a bond,

And the bond will never be broken,

And love will never get lost,

And when brotherhood comes first,

Then the line will never be crossed on our own,

When that line had to be drawn and this line is what we reach.

So remember me when am gone.

How can we not talk about family, when family is all we got?

Everything i went through you were right there by my side,

And now you gonna be with me for the last ride.

So let the light guide your way,

Hold every memory as you go,

And every road you will take will lead you home,

I sigh, push the off button on the stereo and take a deep breath. Men don't spill emotions

. I have an interview to get to.

My book Imagine Mountains has gained popularity and is now being used as a basic script for a local movie. Most people would say i have done well for myself. What they don't know is that though i love creating stories and sharing them with the world, the last thing i wanted with this particular book was popularity. I wrote it to remember an old friend. A friend i still hope to meet again.

Taking my grey trench coat, i pick up my car keys. I have a long day before me.

****

Traffic, Traffic.

The current report is that our country is loosing millions annually while we stuck on traffic. I decide to take advantage of my situation and pick up my phone to check if i have any messages. As expected my mum and Richard have sent messages wishing me luck with my interview.

The traffic starts moving. I smile and place the phone on the passenger seat then resume driving. Thirty minutes later i am infront of the Nation television headquarters. Just ten minutes left before my interview. The chilled morning is gradually being replaced by the warm sun. I remove my trench coat and place it on the back seat of car then lock it and head into the building.

Ten minutes later am in front of the station's camera men, with a friendly looking host smiling at my direction. This is not helping my nervous self. It's my first time ever being interviewed on live television. My heart is racing wildly for reasons i don't know. I was never good at being in the front line. Allan was.

Relax its your time to shine, don't spend it freaking out.

That's what Allan would say.

I take a deep breath and smile back at my host.

"Ready?" She asks.

I nod and the count down begins.

"We are going live in one, two."

Then the silent one.

She does the intro and soon enough i am the center of attention.

"On to our first question Mr..." I cut her off before she completes.

"Please call me Dylan, it makes me more comfortable."

"Okay Dylan. When did you discover that you could write?" She shoots the first question.

I smile.

"Thanks Ella for that question. First i must say that i am happy to be hosted in your show today. It's such an honour to be here. Back to your question. I can't say my interest in writing had a defining moment because as long as i remember i was creating something with words. However, i started writing books back in college. As a good luck streak i got my first book immediately published after college."

"You must be really hardworking to have your book published at such a young age."

"I wouldn't say i haven't  worked hard, but i attribute a huge part of my success today to great friends who directed me on the right path."

She  goes on asking basic question until she gets to heart of the interview.

"In your book Dylan, you describe that the love your friend had for you  - as having exceeded that a woman could ever give you. A line lifted directly from the book of Samuel in the Bible. Does it inform how you feel towards your friend? The brother bond you shared?"

"Yeah so much. The main character in the book is centered around a vague representation of a friend i lost to the happenings of this world. He is not dead atleast, but i have no idea where he is or how to find him.

She looks at me with an almost pity look.

"Suppose your friend was watching us right now, what would you say to him?"

I pause for a while. I have thought about this. I have had time to think about this. Ten years. Now am being asked to do it. To say a word to Allan. I have always wondered what i would say to him or even if i could speak to him in that moment i see him again. He is the brother that is still alive. The one i can have hope of seeing again in this life.

"I haven't really given that a thought," i say stuttering.

"You have a chance now, just say something."

"I geuss i could say something."

I draw a deep breath.

"Allan wherever you are, long time no see brother. I imagine you joined the army just as you wanted. The last few weeks of high school i saw that something was bothering you but you never cared to share anything. After all you did for me i would like to lmagine that your life rolled out as perfect as you had dreamt. That you married Marriana the model with long hair."

I pause briefly.

"Also you were right about Richard. He is one of the finest detectives i have met. Clearly not that fine though because he has been unable to locate you. We miss you buddy. Call us sometime."

"Wow." Ella comments.

I smile.

"Hearing you say those words feel like you were leaving a message on an answering machine and that he is going to listen to it and call back."

"Well let's hope he actually calls."

The Interview continues for another twenty minutes and i get to answers about my plans, giving advice to upcoming writers and other related stuff.

An hour with Ella and am finally free to go. My mum is burning up my cellphone with calls. I wait till i get to the car then i call her. She picks up immediately.

"Hello mum."

"You looked handsome today."

"Thanks mum."

Silence follows.

"Am proud of you Dylan."

"Thanks mum."

"Dylan..."

"Yes mum."

"It's been ten years now, don't you think you are coming out as an obsessive person who can't just let go of the past when you write about your dear old friend?"

"Mum he is family. He is my brother from another mother. If Brian was somewhere lost in the corners of this earth. I would move mountains to find him. He is not here but Allan is. Something was wrong when he left. I would love to know if he is okay."

"I worry Dylan."

"Mum don't worry about me. Its just a book based on true events of my life and i am now famous because of it. You know he really helped me. I am just being appreciative in the only way i know how."

"Writing."

"Yes writing."

"Okay come see me soon."

"I will be there over the weekend."

"Love you."

"Love you too mum."

I hung up the phone. Richard has texted me yet again.

You did good man. Drinks on me later.

I chuckle, put my cell phone aside and turn on the ignition key.

*************

Four hours later am in front of our favourite joint. Am thirty minutes early so i have to wait for my friend Richard. I order coke and settle on the stool by the counter. I take my phone and soon am soaked in social media. Snooping over everyone's fake business.

Rachel's post pops up. She is one of my student. One of the bright ones. Witty and out of the box thinker. She is wearing a simple red dress and has her arms on her waist. She is my student but i must admit she is one lady to watch out for.

. Beautiful from the soul out.

"Congratulations Dee." Mike the bartender tells me forcing me to lift my face of the phone.

"Thanks man i didn't know you follow my stuff."

"You are right, i am not into books or anything but i am happy for you. Your success makes me happy, continue shining."

"Thanks man."

"My nephew gave me a copy of your book. Can you sign it for him?"

"Sure, why not?"

He places a brand new copy of my book Imagine Mountains on the counter beside my drink then leaves with an order. I open the first page. Lucky for him i have a pen with me. I sign the book. I have signed hundreds of this in the past couple of weeks. Am about to return the pen to my pocket when another copy of my book is placed infront of me again.

"Can i get your autograph sir?"

"Sure."

I sign again in the first page of the book feeling a sense of achievement and pride.

"Here you go sir. I hope it meets your expectation."

I turn to face my fan and lo as i live and breath the day is upon me. I stand from my seat and in disbelief i call his name.

"Allan!"
