The shield's magic was weakening.

Aremu could see a loophole visibly.

He motioned one of his men to pass through.

The man reached the other side unscathed.

His men gasped in surprise as none had ever passed and survived.

The subject too was apparently surprised as he checked himself multiple times.

Without warning, an unidentified creature appeared from nowhere and leapt on him, tearing and feeding through his flesh unapologetically.

Aremu studied the creature.

He had never seen anything like it despite knowing and studying beasts.

The creature had the physique of a human but it had the face of a wolf and a hairy body.

Done with the body, it took it's leave.

Aremu turned to the scholar in rage,

"Dele! What happened?"

He questioned barely keeping his sanity.

The boy scribbled in a book before speaking,

"We recently discovered them in Desuda plains. I believe they are hybridized creatures, a mix between jawlers and warjackals."

He said.

"How do we pass?"

Aremu requested, his patience waning.

"Noise . They are hypersensitive to loud sounds like warjackals."

He answered.

Aremu was glad he hadn't murdered him.

The boy had proven to be a powerful tool.

He had to mould him in his image, something he would have done if his children were alive.

Aremu sent another soldier inside with a shield and a battleaxe.

The beast arrived with a snicker on it's face.

The man hurriedly hit the axe-head and metallic shield forcefully against themselves as it created a vibration that sent the beast agony.

It sped off holding it's bleeding ears.

Through the corner of his eye, he could see a plastered smirk on Dele's face.

The moon, the source of the shield's impotency began to disappear signalling it would soon be dawn and the shield's potency would return.

He ordered his men in and they began entering.

Some with horses, Others with weapons and tents.

Aremu then entered himself.

Touching the sands of Desuda, he swore he would conquer it.

He called for Dele, who came with usual energy.

"Rule the empire

. I'll be back."

Aremu said as the first rays of sunshine passed by the shield activating it.

Dele nodded before leaving with a small mass back to the Empire.

Aremu admired the magnificent beauty of Desuda.

Too bad it will be long gone, he said to himself, a sinister look in his eyes.

"Father! Father!",

a voice rang out in the garden king Adeleke was.

He turned to see Adetoye running towards him.

Adeleke was more than shocked to see Adetoye.

He half expected to be in his room hating him.

The boy reached him panting and took his seat beside his father.

After recovering from exhaustion, he spoke:

"I and Amaka thought we should have a Royal event today. Something like a hunt or game."

Adeleke digested the words his son had just spoken.

He had come to the garden to remember the words of prophecy he had been given, his death. He needed to clear his thoughts.

Maybe a hunt would help.

"You're right son. I need a clear mind. I'll proclaim a royal hunt."

"Thanks father."

Adetoye said before racing back to the castle.

Adetoye walked briskly as his leg could, turning right and left to divert suspision.

He silently arrived at his destination, Chikwe's room.

The door creaked too loudly as he opened the door.

Chikwe was there conniving with a dwarf.

Adetoye moved away slightly from the humanoid.

They were cursed things that transferred negative vibes to those in their proximity. Chikwe nudged him closer to hear the news he had brought.

"He bought it. He's announcing a royal hunt."

Adetoye announced unable to supress his joy.

"Good",

Chikwe said before turning to Ebube,

"This is Ebube. He's the assassin."

Adetoye nodded, refusing the handshake the dwarf offered him.

"Why can't we just kill my excuse of a father?"

He queried Chikwe.

"Because, we have to weaken him. Your father might be old but he has a plan. If we kill him now. I'll be the first suspect and Adeola will become Queen because he has informed Gbonka who would rule Ayetoro after his departure."

Adetoye sighed.

He knew Chikwe was right.

He had to play his role too.

***

Adeola's mind went back on what her father had told her.

She was the heir.

She had never even dreamed of such position.

She turned to and fro on her soft bed.

Her mind was not at ease.

She needed to see her father.

She wore less regal clothes and left her room.

King Adeleke's room was at the uttermost part of the castle.

He chose it in order to see the beauty of Ayetoro.

Adeola reached her father's door.

It was ivory plated with pure gold.

She knocked.

The door was opened by a servant who immediately left them to themselves.

Adeola saw her father pacing out of his window before speaking,

"Father. I seek audience."

Her father turned to her.

His eyes were sunken and he looked pale, a ghost of his former self.

"Speak",

he said as he collapsed on his bed.

"It's about the heir issue."

She said.

King Adeleke immediately knew what she had to say.

"No",

he spat,

"You are Queen and you must never revoke it."

He moved closer to her, holding her.

"Promise me!"

He commanded, his eyes bulging.

Adeola knew she could not disobey her Father's wish.

"I promise father."

She said in a rather calm demeanor.

"Good. There are people who want the throne for malevolent purposes. I might not be alive at that time. You must be strong and persevere."

Her Father's words sunk into her soul.

She hadn't let her Father down and she wasn't going to.

Adeola left her father.

She was headed for the wall.

The only way to clear her head was girl talk and she had to tell Ajoke about Remi.

She reached there in no time and opened the door.

The presence she saw left to her stunned. She could see Ajoke and Remi cuddling and laughing.

A wave of jealousy ran over her.

Remi noticed her presence and decided to take his leave.

When he left the two women alone, Adeola did the unexpected.

She gave Ajoke a deafening slap.

"How dare you? You took away my love!"

Adeola spat out in rage.

"My prince..."

Ajoke was cut off by Adeola.

"I don't want to hear your speech. Backstabber."

Ajoke was stunned by the princess' behavior.

Hot tears slid from her cheeks to the ground.

"He's not yours to keep."

Ajoke said almost choking back the words.

Adeola stared at her for a minute, pure rage in her eyes.

"You are an ingrate and I'll never forget this."

Adeola spat before leaving, slamming the door hard to make her point.

Ajoke wept when those doors closed.

Was she an ingrate? Was Remi using her? A million questions flooded through her head.

But one thing she knew was Remi was trouble and she didn't want that.

***

Remi left the wall only to bump into Adegboyega.

He was wearing his headband and that meant it was something regal.

"Just the person i was looking for",

Adegboyega started with his usual bubbling,

"i wanted to invite you to the royal hunt. We're having one today."

Remi saw it as an opportunity to practise his gift.

He was getting stronger and better each day although he hadn't gotten a hang on his bloodtroll alphahood, he was getting better.

"Sure.

Read " Allure " by the same author ( samuelade. )

. I'll be there."

Remi said before riding on midnight leaving for Ifadoju's home.

Ifadoju was outside waiting, a sword on his hands.

Remi could not comprehend what the man had in store for him.

"You're early."

The old man said, a flint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Are you going to fight men?"

Remi had to know.

The man was too old for swordplay needless to say a swordfight.

The old man smiled and began an incantation.

The earth grumbled and stones began to take the shape of humans.

Each stone had a rocky swords two times larger than him.

"They are going to fight you."

Ifadoju said smiling to himself.

Remi closed his eyes and felt his blood boil.

He opened his eyes and went for the first strike dismembering one stone soldier. This act made the rest grow larger.

He had to be fast. He went for another trying to rip it's head off.

Another attacked Remi but he anticipated his move and moved away just in time. The sword destroyed his second.

They didn't enlarge, Remi thought to himself.

An idea sprang into his head, instead of attacking them, he led their attacks on each other successfully killing them all.

"Congratulations. You passed the test. Remember, your wits is your strongest gift. Use it."

The old man then walked into his hut, done with the training probably to brew some herbs.

Remi rode on midnight to the castle.

At the castle, there was an huge crowd consisting of royals and nobles, the blue bloods of the city.

Remi felt alien.

He self-conciously walked past prying eyes to Adegboyega.

A royal mascot came forward holding a gong.

"Let the hunts begin."

He screamed out whilst hitting the gong.

There was a mad roar as everyone scattered into the forest.

Remi and Adegboyega followed Gbonka, the King's general.

Remi could feel the presence of animals around him.

Hares, rats but they were small creatures.

He occasionally heard strange sounds and roars but they were just echoes.

Gbonka suddenly spotted something.

It looked like an igala from afar.

He took his arrow and aimed.

The arrow whizzed in the air before hitting it.

The animal struggled and with it's last strength ran to safety.

The team spread out to look for it.

Remi followed it's blood trail and with his premonition, he found the animal dead.

It had another arrow in it's head.

It was strange.

They were the only hunters around.

Then it hit him. He saw himself in another part of the forest.

Gbonka was on the ground dying from an arrow wound.

It was a vision and a clear one.

Remi had understood something about his gift.

Fuzzy visions might not happen, clear ones were bound to.

He raced into another section of the forest.

He spotted Gbonka. He was fine.

However, Remi didn't let his guard down.

He felt the area for irregularities.

Time stopped.

Remi saw an arrow, sharp green tip approaching Gbonka.

His instinct kicked in and he pushed Gbonka out of harm's way.

The arrow impaled a nearby tree where Gbonka had been.

The assassin stealthily left the scene.

"You saved my life."

Gbonka exclaimed, sheer adoration in his eyes.

"What happened?"

The others demanded when they arrived.

"Someone tried to kill me",

were the words Gbonka could manage, his eyes fixated on the arrow embedded to the tree.

***

Aremu stared at the chaos he had caused at a small village near Desuda.

He stared at the chief who kept begging for his people's life.

His people were tied like bundled stick as his men burnt their homes and r*ped their women.

The smell of victory everywhere.

For a moment he had compassion on them.

He could give them a choice, a choice to live.

He doubted they would even give it a thought.

They were fiercely loyal to Adeleke aand it disgusted him.

"Those who swear allegiance to the empire shall live. Make a choice."

Aremu said.

A youth surprisingly stood up despite being bound and said,

"We would rather die."

Aremu admired his courage, stupid courage but courage notheless.

"Nice choice. Kill them, kill them all."

He boomed, his voice teaching their very core.

He turned his back and could hear the wails of adults and children alike.

His heaet bled, he did not want this.

All he wanted was his family but Adeleke had gone too far and if his people had to pay for his crimes then so be it.

(Do you Think Adeleke has hidden skeletons).
