The following day was a Sunday. Ayo was alone in the study room in their home. She and her family had just returned from church service. Her mom was resting as her pregnancy is now very much visible. Bayo was not around also, as he had returned to school after church service that day and her step-dad had driven him to the car park. So, he was also not around.

She went over her ordeal of the previous day . Qualifying for the Olympiad finals, which was a dream come true for her but not fully fulfilled. ‘I still have to win the gold medal,’ she thought as she rested her head on her study table.

Meeting Anu, her childhood friend was another thing she had been excited about. ‘Oh! I hope I haven’t misplaced her number.’ She dashed to her room and ransacked her school uniform. ‘There you are.’ She sighed. She found the paper Anu had given her just where she had left it, in her school uniform’s pocket.

‘I should call her.’ She took out her phone which her step-dad had bought for her on her last birthday. She had rarely used the phone since then. But today she was going to use it. She had to call Anu.

“Hello,” – was the voice she heard from the other end of the call seconds after she dialed Anu's number.

“Is this…” she stammered. Before the call, she had rehearsed a series of things to discuss with Anu over the phone but now, she seemed not to be able to say anything.

“AY?” Anu said at the other end.

“Yes,” she managed to answer.

“I’ve missed you, AY” Anu sounded excited.

“I’ve really missed you too.” Ayo wiped the sweat on her forehead

. “You shouldn’t have left Lizben.”

“I didn’t want to but my dad was persistent. You know how he is.”

“Oh! Yes I do.” She smiled a little as she remembered those days with Anu. They were like a family. “Why did you leave Soundhope?”

“It’s…” Anu sighed. “It’s more complicated than you think.”

Ayo kept mute. She didn’t know how to reply to that.

“AY,” Anu called when she didn’t get any response.

“Yes, I’m still here.”

“I’m sorry about your dad.”

“Thanks.” Ayo sat up on her seat. “I’ve gotten over that.”

“Good. We should hang out sometimes and catch up on old times. If this weekend is okay by you. Let’s say Saturday.” Anu said all at once.

“I don’t know… I mean, I have to stu…” Ayo faltered. She still doesn’t know how to say no to Anu. She remembered the counselor's advice, not to please other people at her own expense. So, she devise another means to decline. “Isn’t that day your Olympiad session?”

“It is,” Anu said over the phone. “We can hang out after. After I beat all of them to the finals.” She chuckled.

Ayo laughed. “Saturday then, only if you are able to score above Funmi.” Her plan had failed and she seems not to be bothered.

“Funmi? Oh! Your school mate. That seems fair to me.”

“Okay.

. But don’t go easy on her like you did against me.”

“Sure, I won’t.”

Ayo stood up from her seat as she had just confirmed her fears. ‘So I wouldn’t have qualified if not for Anu.’ She held the phone in her other hand and said into it. “Anu, thank you.”

“It’s the least I could do for leaving you the way I did.”

They chatted on for the next 20 minutes. Talking about school, people, their old life and many more. Ayo had practically walked Anu through her whole life after the latter left. She even went to the extent of telling her about her illness and Anu only laughed over it calling it a baseless facts. Ayo believed her. She would believe anything Anu told her. She had trusted her before and she sees no reason not to.

'I should pay Bukky a visit.’ Ayo thought as she ended the call with Anu. They had mentioned Bukky in their conversation and Anu had told her all about her encounter with Bukky. ‘I should apologize to her.’
