When Zela was nine years old she saw the violent side of her father. It shook her core. He had always been a very calm and collected man as far as she was concerned. In fact, to her nobody had it figured out like this man. He seemed to possess all the answers in his silence. He rarely spoke, he had a great distrust for words. He kept to himselft mostly . He was a meticulous worker even as far as being a perfectionist and it reflected in his work. So her shock was justified when he, one day out of the blues, attacked her mother and her relatives. Every one ran out of the house except Zela. She was transfixed to the floor. He was raging mad like an unleashed animal ready to attack anything with a heartbeat. Her found her standing there. He was breathing heavily. A total stranger to her. He came near her, patted her head gently, smiled and told her to eat her supper. To forgot all those other nonsensical people including her mother. He loved her, he would never tell her that though. African men do not utter such abominations. . Right there and then she decided never ever to tie herself in marriage. It was an institution built on inequality. And even her mother, the strongest and toughest of all women, had nothing against a docile, toungue- tied anti-social man like her father. She will be damned.
Now she sat in the expanse and expensively decorated dining room next to her husband of two years. Dialo. He had her heart and she could not be happier. All men are dogs, except Dialo. He loved her and most importantly he respected her. She loved and cared for him. Ironically, Dialo was nothing like her father in most aspects. They say girls date their fathers but not her. She admired her father but never consciously or otherwise searched for his attributes in men. She was a well-adjusted human being like that. Dialo was a man's man both in his built and character and she admired him even more than she did her father.
"Will you do it?" He asks looking at her with a smug look on his face. What a douche!
"Definitely not!" She found herself smiling back at him.
"Don't be a wuss..."
"Don't be suicidal..."
"A buddy of mine works with this stuff. He assures me that it is compeletely safe. Live a little, honey. What's in your bucketlist? Tell me. What? Knitting classes..."
"No!" She says outraged just a little bit. She knows his strategy. She has been here before, only this time she is all the wiser.
"Hmmm... take coq au vin in Paris?"
"No!" Her voice loses a bit of conviction.
"Visit the colosseum in Rome?"
"Okay, the colosseum is awesome..."
"So is a spa date."
"You are... impossible."
"Impossible? For wanting to spend quality time with my wife and do fun activities. That's all I want, Zela. Is it too much to ask?" He feigns hurt. Or is hurt. She is not sure anymore.
"No, it's not?"
"You know I've done tandem sky diving before. This is all for you."
"Yeah, I know." What was there to lose? It was all expense paid for by him, it was indeed safe. She tried to recall ever watching in the news that some amatuer sky diver had died when their parachute didn't open at Diani. No, never. What else was on her itiniery expect for mani-pedis. It would be an amazing experience, if she survived.
"What the hell? I'll do it." She tells him a bit recklessly.
"Yes! Thank you honey." He has such a boyish grin, like he has won a medal. No, not a medal just another mundane argument.
"Of course." He plants a brief kiss on her lips then proceeds to call his buddy who is skilled at this stuff. She prepares herself psychologically for an extreme sport. Who would have thought it?
