It has been two weeks and not even a single eyelid of Summayah had lifted. She was still in the coma that scares the living daylights out of her family. They got from the stage of being devastated to silently loosing their hopes. Everyday the doctors would assure them, but it doesn’t seem like their promises would be in action anytime soon.

One of the babies was recovered, the baby could breath normally and she was later handed to Hadiza whom had the right of taking care of her. But still, the other baby is still there fighting for herself just like Summayah was, with each passing second of the day.

They couldn’t bring themselves to name the girl, Hadiza had once begged Uthman to do so but he said . “Of all the sacrifices Summayah made, it was all because of these girls, and no one deserves to name them but her. We should just find a substitute before she wakes up.” And Hadiza reasoned with him, because Summayah had sacrificed all she has in life just to bring them to earth. She deserves to name them with any name she loves.

“Let’s nickname her as Noor then, which means light.” Hadiza suggested and from then, she was being called as Noor.

Noor and her other sister gets to be feed by Summayah through breast pump. The doctors always pumped the milk out of Summayah’s breast and the babies would be fed, that’s how Allah made the girls survived

. Even though one is healthy while the other is not.

Jami’u often sneaks into the hospital when all the living creatures of the earth are fast asleep. His guilty conscious had never let him slept a single day without glancing through the door’s glass and take a glimpse of Summayah. He knew she hasn’t recovered yet, she couldn’t even see him taking stolen glances of her, but he feels that’s the right thing to do. Just seeing her with all the wires connected to her body at least gives him hope that someday she would wake up and forgive him.

He could remember on the days her condition was critical, and she was at the verge of loosing her life. The life he took for granted, the life that doesn’t mattered to him when all she wanted was for him to look at her with pitiful eyes. But he could forever be grateful to Allah for blessing Summayah with the family she has now. They are everything she could ever ask for.

Hadiza had once saw him taking a peek through the glass door, but she didn’t make a single movement that would make him know that she saw him. She pities both Summayah and Jami’u, because they were only kids that were to be guided by their parents during their times of trails, but Jami’u seemed not to have that kind of parents. Had it been he was guided, he wouldn’t have done what he did to his wife. And every human is bound to make mistake that he would regret for the rest of his life. Herself included. She has a regret she’s sure would be buried together with her into her grave.

Hadiza had Noor scooped into her arms while she entered the ICU, she spent minutes looking between Noor and Summayah that she got extremely amazed at the striking resemblance on the two faces. She smiled, the moment tears rolled onto her cheeks and kissed Noor’s forehead. How she wish Summayah would wake up and see her babies, how she wished Summayah was being able to feel that motherly feeling every mother feels when she sets her eyes on her first child. That love, that connection, that triumphant smile, everything. But Summayah was destined to be bombarded with wires all over her body, being locked into an ICU unit without any of her nerves pumping.

The shrill cry of Noor jolted her out of her trance, and she looked at Summayah to see wether she would flinch at the heartily shrill of her child like every mother would, but she seemed lifeless. Hadiza burst into tears and took out Noor’s feeding bottle and fed her. She wished Noor would get the chance to be fed directly by her mother, not this plastic creation of a white man.

Noor sucked the milk from her feeder and was silent, her eyes slowly closing as sleep took over her soul. Hadiza smiled and placed down Noor on the bed beside Summayah to feel the warmth of her mother, making sure their bare skins were attached. She wants them to feel the connection every child and mother is worthy of.

An hour passed before Hadiza came in to take Noor, like always, she has this feeling of hope that she would see Summayah’s eyes opened and directly looking at her. Disappointed as always, she met them peacefully sleepy like she left them. She scooted Noor on her back and directly went out of the room, driving to home for the traditional bath for Noor.

Uthman was known to be among the strongest and fearless doctors in the hospital. But all changed when he brought a bleeding Summayah with his hands. He made it an obligation to always check up on her after an hour interval, and every time he sees her, the heavy feeling in his heart intensifies.

He now eats less, he has bags under his eyes as a result of lack of sleep. Everyone in the hospital knows there is surely something wrong with him. He isn’t that jovial Uthman towards his patients anymore, everything is just complicated and soul detoxifying.

Some of his colleagues said he was suffering from Love sickness. Only if they knew the kind of emotion he feels towards Summayah, Love is just a coruscation. He could imagine if it was one of them this happened to the person they love unconditionally, the pain is almost unbearable.

Every glance at the beating rate of her heart breaks his heart. Every stare at the wires adjoined with her body pinches his soul. Just the lifeless expression he always see on her face was enough to shatter every hope of himself having a good life in the future.

At the door of the ICU, he prayed until he felt his lungs being suffocated. He turned the door knob and his eyes fell on her peacefully sleeping face. He could imagine the lively Summayah calling him Uth with her breathtaking smile. They would’ve been here enjoying their lives to the fullest, but here she is, not being able to decipher when her Uth makes a mien.

He sat down on the chair beside her bed and gently took her hand in his, careful not to smudge the makeup of brunt adorning her hands. He entwined their hands for minutes before he felt tears clouding his view. He didn’t stopped them, because he needs them every time he was before Summayah, else his heart would have this heavy feeling blocking its veins for a week or more.

“I miss you, Summayah. Please wake up, for your babies, for yourself, and for your Uth. Don’t you want me to see that dazzling smile again? Don’t you want me to skip a call from the hospital just to be with you? You want us to hang out at night in an ice cream parlor while staring at the stars right? Wake up please, let’s make that a mandatory.” He was crying unstoppable that he could feel the salty test of his tears in his mouth. He doesn’t know how he was still living while Summayah is in the condition she’s in right now.

Summayah might be a teenager, but the level at which she thinks, acts and speaks is beyond an adult range. She brought peace to his family the one they never had before. There’s a huge age gap between them, but that doesn’t make them anything less of best friends through the time they spent together.

A rueful smile graced Uthman’s lips when he remembered the first time they met. He could remember the name of that hotel, its location, even the day and exact time they first met. He could remember their argument, not a single word had Summayah uttered to him he had forgotten. Everything was carved in his brain. He couldn’t forget anything.

The beautiful memories they shared together. Their little fights and laughters. How she makes him happy with just a single smile from her lips. That softness and warmth seeping from her eyes. The uniqueness of her words. Her beauty is beyond something Uthman could start reminiscing while she’s here fighting for her life.

But he wished she would wake up anytime soon, because he has things to tell her. Things to show her, places to visit together with her. Jokes they would share, and gists he would tell her that he’s sure would make her happy. He has lots of things, and he prays Allah heals her soon.

She would rather call this cell, a life ending dungeon. She had been transferred to a cell with two other criminals, whom happen to be females also. It was such a small place she couldn’t imagine even having it as a bathroom. Not even being able to stand up properly.

What bothers Jennifer more was that, she doesn’t know the situation Summayah is in. Has she made it? Or she’s still suffering on the lane of life and death? She could kill herself because of this, what if all this hardship ends in waste? Because she would be useless if Summayah makes it to life.

She grumbled and used her now feeble hand to cover her nostrils as a pungent smell hits her nose. She couldn’t wait for the time her mother would get her out of this goddamn place! Before she could breath again, what beats the smell of ammonia acid suffocated her lungs and she started coughing and trying to vomit the dried piece of bread she ate this morning.

From what Jennifer realized from these two women, one is the boss and the other is her slave. The slave walked up to her in enigmatic steps and made her stood up, roughly holding her arm. Jennifer struggled to steady her breath, because even the lady smell like a hundred years gutter.

The boss lady shot her a deadly glare from where she stood and thundered! “Young woman, it’s either you hold back your piece of trash to yourself or you would regret ever committing the crime that made you came here. We all committed murder, but we know even if the time would be stopped for you, you would never be able to kill the number of people we have killed. Better respect yourself. Also, no one dare objects to whatever I said, or else I’d kill you and have myself grounded here forever.

That wouldn’t be a problem, if my heart desire would be fulfilled. So, this smell you’re scrunching your face about, we’re used to it and love it actually. Respect yourself if you want to live long here.” Jennifer thought she was a villain until she met this woman that doesn’t seem to have an iota of humanity in her. Though painfully and laboriously, she nodded her head and the lady threw her arm in the air.

With rumpling breaths, she looked around the cell and all her eyes could spot was nothing but a tethered cement and themselves. Not even a single mattress they would sleep on. The toilet adjoined to the cell was merely two feets and the smell that flow from it is life threatening. This whole cell isn’t half her bathroom, but she’s forced to live here just because of Summayah.

Is that girl worth all this if she doesn’t die? Is she going to win again? Have her health back and Jami’u will marry her back and they would live happily ever after with their kids. Just the though of it nearly stopped the beating of her heart, she hates the guts of Summayah like she has never hated anything in her life. Not even her death.

She hates Summayah for putting her into this position. If she had never showed in the picture, she wouldn’t have been locked up in a cell that smells like the most pungent place in the entire world. If Summayah hadn’t married Jami’u in the first place, she wouldn’t have ever did all the things she did just to get him back. If Summayah hadn’t made Jami’u fell in love with her, Jennifer is sure she wouldn’t have been tucked in this place.

After she planned for the r*pe, if the stupid and useless ovarian eggs of Summayah hadn’t conceived, some things would’ve probably being avoided. If Summayah hadn’t been showing up in their lives with Jami’u, Jennifer would’ve long forgotten about her and she wouldn’t have committed the sin that brought her here. And now, she’s in it all by herself, no mother, no Jami’u, not even her beloved boyfriend.

The thought of her new boyfriend made her slumped on the ground with a thump, because she remembered that he hadn’t made a single effort in looking for her. She’s sure he knows about her being sacked by the police and she’s locked in this malicious cell.

Her attention was brought back to her real surroundings when she heard the sound coming from the  door made by the warder. She looked at the direction of the door and the warder shoved a tray having three plates on it before she locked the cell again and walked off.

The two other women hungrily took their plates and dug into it like hungry lions, while all Jennifer did was stared at the beans floating in the water. She could count the beans just like she could count the days of the week. Disgustingly, she kept looking at the food she was supposed to eat and the smell hits her nostrils again. She suddenly felt nauseous, and she knew this time she would never hold it in.

The cell being so small, they were seated opposite each other but their knees were almost brushing. She could remember the look in the boss lady’s eyes but she couldn’t hold it anymore, so she let out all the gross within her and vomited on the dangerous ladies and their foods.

“What the fuck!” The other lady thundered and stood up, looking at her wasted food and now damaged clothes, not that they were sparkly clean before.

“Hold the bitch up!” The boss lady bellowed and stood up as well. Jennifer was still vomiting, as if she’s going to vomit the whole of her intestines when the lady abruptly made her stood up.

She felt a loud striking slap on both her cheeks and before she could get her senses back, there was a punch that hits directly onto her stomach and she was forced to let out a painful wail.

Before she was realized what was really happening, they pushed her down until she fell flat on the floor and her face covered with their food together with the contents of her vomiting. They kept smacking her back with their huge legs having her face dipping more into the gross.

Maliciously, the boss lady lifted her up using her hair, and Jennifer felt the world slowly rotating through her eyes. Then came punches from every angle, landing at every crevice and corner of her body. They slowed down a bit, but she doesn’t have the energy to beg them to stop.

Summoning up the remaining energy left in her, she looked at them with crying eyes and folded her hands in a begging manner. “I beg of you in the name of god to stop beating me, I’m pregnant, that makes me easily nauseous that I couldn’t control myself sometimes.” Before she could close her mouth, they kept throwing punches on her stomach that she had to fell on the ground with a loud thud, her face directly facing the ceiling.

“Because of the bastard pregnancy of yours, you spoilt our food and now we wouldn’t eat until dinner right? Let’s beat the living daylights out of you and see how the pregnancy would stay!” The boss lady roared and kept matching on Jennifer’s stomach with all the might in her, while the other lady was beating her from each angle.

Jennifer wants to beg them to stop, to tell them that she felt a hot water running down her thighs, that she’s sure now the pregnancy is no more, the baby she has all her hopes on is no more. They should let her live on, so she could see the downfall of Summayah, they should stop because it hurts everywhere, but her heart aches more because she’s sure she has lost her child.

She’s suddenly feeling numbness seeping within her while the flow of what she assumes to be blood kept flowing within her thighs. She wants to cry but even the tears were drained to make a movement of rolling down her cheeks so she could feel at ease.

Everywhere is hurting, everywhere she felt their punches and blows felt like a droplet of fire on her already damaged body. She’s sure they have broke even a single joint of her body. Who would come to her rescue? For the first time in forever she felt how it feels to be hopeless.

Before she slipped into unconsciousness, she began hearing the voice of the warder in a high pitched tone “Let go of her! You bitches!” She thundered. And under hypnosis, Jennifer could hear the voices of three warders as they lifted her from the damaged floor and there was a speed up in their pace. She felt herself being laid on a soft cushion she would like to assume of it as a car seat, and there was a sudden gush of air as the car took off to the place she assumed to be as the hospital.
