Sumayyah woke up the next day feeling weak but better than the day before. She smiled when she saw Jamiu standing by her bed with a breakfast tray.

“Salaam Alaikum, Sumayyah. How are you feeling now?”. He dropped the tray on the table and moved closer to her.

“Walaykum salam. I am fine . She answered weakly.

“Alhamdulillah. I prepared pap for you, so eat a little.”

Sumayyah shook her head. “I am not hungry.”

“Do you want me to force you? Please eat so you don’t develop ulcer”

“But seriously, I am not hungry.”

Jamiu sighed and tried to make her see reason. “I have an idea, I will feed you and you will also do the same for me. Deal?”

Sumayyah smiled. “Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“I am not a child, I can eat by myself,” Sumayyah whined.

Jamiu chuckled. “To me, you are still a child because you behave like one”

“What? If I wasn't sick, I would beat you up. How can you say I behave like a child?”

Jamiu laughed. “Let’s just feed each other and in no time, we will finish this pap”

“I know you won't back out, but seriously I am...” Before she could finish her sentence, Jamiu had already scooped up some pap and thrust the spoon into her mouth

. Sumayyah looked at Jamiu in surprise and they both burst into laughter.

They continued their meal in silence until Jamiu broke the silence by asking a question that had been bothering him since he arrived.

“Sumayyah, what happened to you and why didn't you get to meet Azeezat before she left.?”

Sumayyah stopped eating and looked like all the air had been sucked out of her lungs. She began to cry fresh tears because she could not bring herself to tell him the reason why everything happened.

Jamiu tried to console her but she didn’t stop. “Hey, I am sorry I made you cry. Please Sumayyah, just tell me everything. I can help you. We can fix this together.”

Sumayyah looked into Jamiu’s eyes and wondered if she could trust him. “I..I...” She stammered and Jamiu quietly moved towards her and hugged her.

“I am your husband, you should tell me whatever it is that is bothering you.” He wiped her tears. “I hate to see you cry, just tell me please.”

Sumayyah sighed and began to speak. “I couldn't meet her because I was locked up in the storeroom.”

“Locked up? Explain please.”

Sumayyah continued. “I was locked up by your mum because Jenni... “ She couldn't complete her sentence, because Jamiu's phone interrupted her by beeping, indicating he had a message. He picked up his phone and read the message.
“We have a test today?” Immediately he called his friend who sent him the message
Sumayyah noticed Jamiu became tense all of a sudden. She couldn’t hear what the other person he called was talking about, but it was obvious that it wasn’t good news. His replies: ‘why didn't you tell me since yesterday and okay.’; further cemented the feeling. Sumayyah asked him what the problem was immediately he ended the call.
“My friend just sent a message telling me we have a test this afternoon.” Jamiu replied her solemnly

“I thought you said you have only one paper left.”
“Yes, but I don't know why this particular lecturer has decided to conduct another test after we have done several tests before. My friend said that he was very serious about it and anyone that misses it will be given zero marks in the test because he is using this one only. I guess some lecturers are sadists.” He concluded.
“I guess you have to go immediately, it's important,” Sumayyah told him

“I can't leave you all alone, you are very ill Sumayyah.”

“I can manage, remember the nurse is going to be here very soon. So, don't worry, she will take good care of me.” Sumayyah assured him gently.

There was a knock on the door and Jamiu got up to check who it was. At the front door was the nurse
“Salam Alaikum.”

“Walaykum salaam. You can come in.”

The both of them went to Sumayyah’s room and she told Jamiu to prepare for school.

“Just go to school, you shouldn't miss your test.”

“Sumayyah, I am leaving right now. Miss…?” He said turning to the nurse. “Please take care of my wife.”

The nurse chuckled. “I will. Your wife will be well taken care of, don't worry.”

“Thank you so much.” He turned back to Sumayyah and kissed her on the forehead for the first time since their marriage. “Summayah, take care.”

“I will” Sumayyh felt suddenly shy. “Just tell the nurse not to give me any injections, I can still manage the pills”.

Jamiu laughed. “I can't tell her that because I want the best for you and you need to be healthy.”

“You should have taken my side, not fair!” Sumayyah pouted

“Ouch! You just hurt my feelings right now.” Jamiu pretended to be hurt and clutched his chest.

“Just go okay.” Sumayyah laughed

“I am on my way ma'am.” With that, he left immediately.

Mrs. Aminat arrived in Sokoto and called Jennifer immediately she entered her room. Jennifer arrived a few minutes later and together they discussed what to do.

“I told you this girl would turn your son against you.” Jennifer began

Mrs. Aminat shook her head in self-pity. “What should we do.?”

“Show him the pictures and recorder when you go there right now.”

“I will do that. But what if he still hates me and not that useless girl?”

“Then we will come up with another plan. Don't worry mum. He will hate Sumayyah, I am sure of that.”

“Thank you so much. I want to get rid of her very soon.” Mrs. Aminat stood up to leave. “I must go and pay them a visit right away.”

“Yes mum, do that. Please give me some feedback”

“Of course.”

With that, Mrs. Aminat drove to her son's house to give him the evidence.

Meanwhile, Sumayyah was asleep when she suddenly felt the urge to vomit and she quickly rushed to the bathroom, but it subsided just as soon as it came. She washed her face, went back to bed andcovered herself up. The nurse came back with a plate of yam and egg.

“Sumayyah, I just went down the street to get you some food so that you can use your medications.”

“I drank pap before, I don’t want to eat anything.”

“You have to eat something before taking your medications. Remember your husband told me to take care of you and that is what I am doing.”

Sumayyah couldn't disagree with the nurse’s logic. Besides, it must have taken a lot of effort to get the food, so Sumayyah had to show her appreciation. “Okay, I will eat it.”

“That’s a good girl” she smiled and served the meal to Sumayyah.

Sumayyah hadn't eaten half of the food when she felt like vomiting. She ran to the toilet and threw up everything she had eaten all day. The nurse quickly rushed to her side, checking her closely. She wiped Sumayyah’s face before cleaning up the mess and gently supported Sumayyah back to her bed.

“Are you pregnant, Sumayyah.” The nurse asked checking her eyeballs

“Pregnant?” Sumayyah laughed and placed her hand on her stomach. “You mean in here?”

“Yes. Are you?”

“I am not pregnant.”

The nurse shook her head. “I think you are, Sumayyah. You need to get checked up very soon because you are showing signs of pregnancy.”
Neither of them noticed Mrs. Aminat standing by the bedroom door, where she had overheard their whole conversation.
“Sumayyah is pregnant? Answer me. I need an answer right now.!” Mrs. Aminat screamed
Sumayyah was paralysed with fear and was at a loss for words. Even the nurse didn't know what to say.
