The next morning, Mrs. Aminat stole Sumayyah’s phone and gave it to Jennifer. Although she was curious as to what Jennifer had planned, she did not ask. She, however, called Jamiu and found out he would return in thirty

minutes, so she got the recorder and pictures and placed on the table for Jamiu to find. She also penned down a note which read thus;

Jamiu, I know you are finding it hard to believe but trust me Sumayyah isn't a girl with good morals . She has betrayed us, in fact, I believe she wants me dead. Ever since you met her, your attitude towards me has changed. Please do listen to the tape and look and the pictures. She’d be gone by the time you arrive because I will send her away as soon as I drop this pen. I took this decision because I want to release my son from the clutches of that evil girl. Don’t fret because she’s not worth it. See you soon.
                                       Your mother,
                                                   Aminat.

Meanwhile, Sumayyah wondered why Mrs Aminat did not barge in on her like she used to, even more, so that it was almost noon. The pregnancy had started taking its toll on her and she felt tired

. Her heart jumped into her throat the moment Mrs. Aminat stepped into her room.
“So you are still asleep, ehnn?”
“Good afternoon ma”
Mrs. Aminat did not bother to return her greeting. “Stand up and pack your things. You are leaving. I don't want Jamiu to meet you here.”
“Mum, please let me speak with him for one last time. I would have called him but I can’t seem to find my phone.”

“I don't want to hear anything from you, just pack your clothes and let’s go”

“I can't leave like this. Please let me speak with Jamiu. I am sure he’ll understand.”

Mrs Aminat’s patience was running thin. Without a word, she carried Sumayyah’s luggage and dumped it over the balcony in the room. “Get out now.”

Sumayyah could only plead and hope that her in-law would listen. “Mother, please. I have nowhere else to go.”

“I don't care. Go to your parents or start a real business of selling your body to men. I know you will entice a lot of them with your beauty.

“Mother, I beg of you. I will do whatever you want.” Sumayyah’s tears rolled down her cheeks. I will work as a maid, a slave. I wil even leave Jamiu, if that’s what you want. Just give me a place to stay please.”

Mrs Aminat dragged Sumayyah out of her room intent on throwing her out of the house. Unfortunately, she missed her footing at the top of the staircase and tumbled down. She hit her head and passed out immediately. Scared, Sumayyah flew down the stairs and bent over Mrs Aminat’s body.

“Mother, mother...please wake up.”

Jamiu walked in on them at that moment and he panicked when he saw his mother unconscious on the floor. “Sumayyah what happened to mother.?”

“She tripped and fell down the stairs.”

“My God! Sumayyah please go outside and stop the cabman. I think he’s still at the gate.”

Sumayyah ran outside and luckily for her the man was still outside. Jamiu carried his mother out and placed her in the cab.

“Sir, please drive us to the hospital. Sumayyah, just stay at home and wait for me”.

“No, I want to come with you.”

“Sumayyah, please don't argue with me right now. Just go inside.”

Distraught but left with no choice than to obey, she turned and walked back into the house. She gulped down a glass of water and almost immediately, she began to feel dizzy. A few moments later, she collapsed onto the floor.

*******

A stranger entered the house while Sumayyah was still unconscious. He quickly injected her before dialling Jennifer’s number.

“The job has been completed halfway. I just need Jamiu here immediately.”

“Isn’t he back from school yet?” Jennifer was shocked. According to Mrs Aminat, Jamiu ought to have returned.

“He is but he is at the hospital.”

Jennifer gasped. “Hospital? I hope you didn't do anything stupid.”

“I have been in this house unnoticed since daybreak. If I hadn't placed a banana peel on the staircase, Mrs Aminat would have ruined our plans.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“She tried to throw Sumayyah out of the house, so I had to devise a plan. I placed a banana peel on the staircase and she fell down the stairs. Jamiu arrived and rushed her to the hospital.”

“What about Sumayyah?”

“She is here. I am ready to do what you asked of me.”

“Good job, I will try my best to get Jamiu back home. Be ready I will text you when everything is set.

“Don’t take too long. She will be awake in an hour.”

“Okay, leave that to me. Do you know which hospital Jamiu went to?”

“I don't know but it should be the hospital down the road.”

“Okay I know the place. City hospital. See you soon.”

The stranger carried Sumayyah into her room, undressed her and lay by her side, waiting for his boss to call him later.

*********

Jamiu paced back and forth in the hospital reception, desperate for news about his mother’s condition. It had been thirty minutes since Mrs Aminat had been wheeled into the ICU and no one had come out to tell him anything. Jamiu slumped into a chair and sent a fervent prayer to Allah.  Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he jumped. Thinking it was one of the doctors he sprang to his feet, but his face fell when he saw Jennifer in front of him. He jerked to remove her hand from his shoulder.

“What are you doing here, Jennifer? Are you here to cause more trouble for us?”

Jennifer smiled sweetly. “I am here for a check-up.”

“I know you are lying.”

“I understand if you don’t trust me anymore, after all I behaved like a child. But I promise you that I have learnt from my mistakes and I regret everything that I did to you and Sumayyah.” Jennifer said in a sombre voice.

Jamiu was still sceptical, as if he was trying to decide whether to believe her or not. But still he said. “It’s okay, we make mistakes at some point in life. I forgive you.”

Jennifer beamed. “Thank you so much. Truly I am a changed person. I saw you from afar and you looked so distressed that I had to come closer to see if I could help. Tell me, what happened to you? Why are you here?”

“My mum had an accident and ...”

Jamiu was interrupted when the doctor stepped out. “Doctor, how is my mum.?”

The doctor smiled. “Alhamdulillah, she is fine but still unconscious.”

“Can I go in and see her now?”

“No, you can't. In the meantime, go home and get her some clothes and other necessary things because she would be here for a few days. We also ran some tests and we are awaiting the results.”

Jamiu heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank you so much, doctor. I will go home immediately.”

Jennifer was more than happy when she heard this. “Hmm, I have to return home too, but I will come back to pay her a visit.”

“Thank you so much, Jennifer. He left the hospital in a rush and headed home.

Jennifer texted the stranger: He is on his way, so make sure you do it right and Summayah must be awake before he gets home.

“Sumayyah you poor, innocent girl. You are doomed and will lose your husband today. Get ready to suffer all alone.” She said to herself.

*****
Jamiu was very upset with Sumayyah for not calling to find out how his mother was doing. He entered the compound, as he was about to go in, he heard noises coming from the direction of Sumayyah’s room.

“Who could she be arguing with?” He thought to himself. The voices became more distinct as he moved closer, and he could make out Sumayyah’s voice. He stopped to listen.

“What are you doing in my room?”

“You know I love you. Don’t punish me this way because of your husband.”

“Just shut up, what are you talking about? I don't know you.”

“Sumayyah, you can’t do this to me. How can you forget all the memories we shared together that night?”

“Stop lying and get out of my house before anyone sees you.” Sumayyah hissed.

The Stranger ignored her. “Am I not the most handsome guy you ever went out with? You can’t ditch me because your husband is back in town. You know I love you.” He touched her hands and Sumayyah shrugged his hands off.

“Don’t touch me or else I will alert the neighbours.”

The stranger kept on talking. “Give me your heart and soul. I promise to treat you better than the last time. Just name your price and I will gladly pay”

Jamiu was so surprised by everything he had heard. He opened the door of her room and the sight before him was real, he knew he wasn't dreaming.
Jamiu dragged Sumayyah out, before pouncing on the guy.

“Hey!” The stranger laughed and didn't stop despite the blows he had received from Jamiu. “Your wife is my girlfriend, why are you so selfish. It’s not fair to have her all to yourself.”

“Stop lying!” Sumayyah turned to Jamiu. “I’ve never seen him before.”

“I am not lying. If you don’t believe me, check her messages. We even chatted today, and your mother left you some evidence in the living room. With that, the he snickered and left.

“What have I done to deserve all this from you?” Jamiu asked Sumayyah

“Please, you must trust me. I didn't do anything wrong.”

Jamiu slapped her. “You haven't done anything? What is all this then? How could you invite a guy into our matrimonial home? I gave you my everything, and even promised never to lay my hands on you until you were ready.” Jamiu shook his head. “Mother tried to warn me, but I was blinded by love. Did you push her down the staircase?”

“I didn't do anything wrong please trust me.”

“Sumayyah, I am disappointed in you and can no longer trust you. I came home to discuss the pregnancy and was ready to accept you with no conditions but… I was wrong. I didn't know my wife was a pr-stitute.”

“I am not a pr-stitute.”

Without a word, Jamiu dragged Sumayyah into the living room where he listened to the evidence on the table. When it was over, be broke down in tears. “I regret the day I married you. Wallahi, you will pay for what you have done to my family.”

With that, he wiped his tears and moved to his mother's room to get the necessary things before heading to the hospital. Summayah was sobbing uncontrollably. Jamiu surely hated her now. He had shed tears on her account, he was shattered, and she knew all her troubles had only just begun. She got up, went to get an ablution done and headed for her prayer mat for Allah was her only source of help.
